Joss Whedon shot another film while directing The Avengers?

UPDATE – The film’s official site has been updated with a press release that gives some more information on the project. “Filmed in just 12 days entirely on location in exotic Santa Monica, the film features a stellar cast of beloved (or soon to be beloved) actors – some of them veterans of Shakespearean theater, some completely new to the form. But all dedicated to the idea that this story bears retelling.” The film was shot in black and white and will finish post-production around the same time AVENGERS hits theaters. Whedon plans on making the festival circuit with MUCH ADO fall of next year. Previously…

Joss Whedon has been a busy little bee. He’s still busy in post-production on THE AVENGERS but somehow found some time to work on another film during that ambitious schedule.

While most writers struggle to get one project off the ground, Whedon has somehow kept his indie cred alive by directing an adaptation of Shakespeare’s MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING while also directing THE AVENGERS.

Last night, Nathan Fillion tweeted a link to muchadothemovie.com a website that announced the “completion of principal photography” on MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING. The announcement including a cast that will be familiar to Whedon fans and includes Nathan Fillion, Amy Acker, Alexis Denisof, Clark Gregg and Sean Maher.

The news of a secret project sent Twitter into a tizzy wondering if the project was real or just an elaborate practical joke. Fillion responded to the Twitter excitement by saying, “Oh, it’s real. Very. Very. Real.” Maher added, “I promise you it’s the real deal and we’re VERY excited about it!”

Not much is known about the project at this point other than it will be a loose adaptation of Shakespeare’s play set in modern times and that Fillion will be playing Dogberry, the comical and bumbling chief of police.

A formal announcement on MUCH ADO is expected later today at which point we’ll update and know a little bit more about Whedon’s intentions…
