Joss Whedon thanks "peeps" for The Avengers support and talks The Dark Knight Rises competition

05.09.2012by:

Director Joss Whedon, still reeling from the success of THE AVENGERS, has taken to the web to do what so few filmmakers do when faced with massive success; to give thanks.

On the website "Whedonesque" ol' Joss has written a lengthy thank you note to his supporters and fans peeps, saying, "So this is me, saying thank you. All of you. You’ve taken as much guff for loving my work as I have for over-writing it, and you deserve, in this our time of streaming into the main, to crow. To glow. To crow and go “I told you so”, to those Joe Blows not in the know."

Wait, what was that about Joe Blows?

Whedon goes into a lengthy FAQ with, uh, himself, and addresses some of the things that have been on fan's minds, including the competitive comparison between THE AVENGERS and THE DARK KNIGHT RISES.  When asked (by himself) if he'd be sad if his film was eclipsed by THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, Whedon said, "I’m glad I made you ask that. I will feel sad. But let’s look at the bigger picture, and I can’t say this enough: THIS IS NOT A ZERO SUM GAME. Our successes, whoever has the mostest, are a boon to each other.

We’re in the business of proving that superhero movies aren’t just eye-candy (they’re eye-TRUFFLES!). People seem intent on setting us against each other, and though I’m proud to be Woody Strode to Nolan’s Kirk Douglas, I think they’re missing the point. Whatever TDKR does on its first weekend, the only stat that matters to me is the ticket I’M definitely buying. Nolan and Raimi INVENTED the true superhero flick, yo. (Special mention to Jon Favreau and James Gunn.) Happy to be in the mix.

The rest of the Q&A is chock full of Whedon's snark and you can weed through it here if you so desire.  Below is the full "thank you" portion, which I find rather cool.

THE AVENGERS is currently in theaters (with most of us having already seen it two or more times) and next up for Whedon is his Shakespeare film MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING and hopefully an announcement that he'll be taking the reigns of THE AVENGERS 2.

Dear Friends,

Well, it’s been quite a weekend. Someday, long from now, I will even have an emotional reaction to it, like a person would. I can’t wait! But before I become blinded by this “emotion” experience, there’s a few things I’d like to say. Well, type.

People have told me that this matters, that my life is about to change. I am sure that is true. And change is good — change is exciting. I think — not to jinx it — that I may finally be recognized at Comiccon. Imagine! Also, with my percentage of “the Avengers” gross, I can afford to buy… [gets call from agent. Weeps manfully. Resumes typing.] …a fine meal. But REALLY fine, with truffles and s#!+. And I can get a studio to finance my dream project, the reboot of “Air Bud” that we all feel is so long overdue. (He could play Jai Alai! Think of the emotional ramifications of JAI ALAI!!!!)

What doesn’t change is anything that matters. What doesn’t change is that I’ve had the smartest, most loyal, most passionate, most articulate group of — I’m not even gonna say fans. I’m going with “peeps” — that any cult oddity such as my bad self could have dreamt of. When almost no one was watching, when people probably should have STOPPED watching, I’ve had three constants: my family and friends, my collaborators (often the same), and y’all. A lot of stories have come out about my “dark years”, and how I’m “unrecognized”… I love these stories, because they make me seem super-important, but I have never felt the darkness (and I’m ALL about my darkness) that they described. Because I have so much. I have people, in my life, on this site, in places I’ve yet to discover, that always made me feel the truth of success: an artist and an audience communicating. Communicating to the point of collaborating.

I’ve thought, “maybe I’m over; maybe I’ve said my piece”. But never with fear. Never with rancor. Because of y’all. Because you knew me when. If you think topping a box office record compares with someone telling you your work helped them through a rough time, you’re probably new here. (For the record, and despite my inhuman distance from the joy-joy of it: topping a box office record is super-dope. I’m an alien, not a robot.)

So this is me, saying thank you. All of you. You’ve taken as much guff for loving my work as I have for over-writing it, and you deserve, in this our time of streaming into the main, to crow. To glow. To crow and go “I told you so”, to those Joe Blows not in the know. (LAST time I hire Dr. Seuss to punch my posts up. Yeesh!) Point being, you deserve some honor, AND you deserves some FAQs answered. So please welcome my old friend and certainly not-on-my-payroll reporter/flunky, Rutherford D. Actualperson!

Extra Tidbit: Would you rather see more TV or film work from Joss?

I loved the Avengers. It was fun and that's all that matters. And I am looking forward to Dark Knight Rises. Both are different in their own approach. Both are the same in that they are comic book properties. In the end, if they are both entertaining, we as the audiences have a great time. Who cares about box office? In the end, the only people that end up with big win are the studios who will be swimming in our hard earned money after the weekend is over. All I care about is, if they

He forgot to mention Bryan Singer. I wonder if Nolan's take on the Bat would have been financed if it hadn't been for the dark leather Xmen suits.

Eh, I really don't like his snarky attitude.

He's a talented director but I really dislike reading his bullshit. Ever since that snarky open letter about "Terminator 5" (yeah, remember that?) his too-cool-for-school, sarcastic attitude has rubbed me the wrong way. I mean clearly he's being facetious but the fact that he wrote a self-congratulatory FAQ to himself is ridiculous. Obviously some people enjoy reading it though so I'll just shut up and enjoy the movies.

I've read he definitely is signed for Avengers 2. You think Disney will pick up that option??? DOY.

Love his shout out to Raimi and Favs. Both set the bar quite high all Joss did was set it a bit higher.

I don't see why he cant tackle both movies & TV like Abrams & he has also proven to be a sought after director now & let's hope he gets signed on for the sequels to the avengers. Disney & Marvel seem to be knowing what to do. I don't see why other studios just dont give up the rights because they simply cannot do what Marvel Studios has done.

I don't care which one makes more. The only ones concerned about which movie makes more than the other are the execs counting the money.

Avengers was pretty good but comparing it to TDKR is stupid, the weekend money amount and quality is totally different. First, Avengers was 90% CGI and each character did not have to star and take on the whole movie, 6 times the one liners and no possibility of any one of the heros getting old or stupid feeling. Second, Avengers had 4 superheros with their own movies, unlike TDKR if you don't like Batman in general then you won't see it but if you didn't like one of the heros from Avengers it

Great movie but comparing the two is stupid and saying the Avengers is better then any of the 3 Dark Knight movies is dumb. When you see the tumbler blast throw a wall and blow some shit up that was 95% done in real life with 5% of cgi make up. And when you walk away completely satisfied with TDKR it won't be because you laughed or thought it looked cool, it will be because the story blew you away, the villian surpassed your every thought of what he was and the action was outstanding, believable, real, and Amazing!
Different Beast but you can't compare. One is a cinematic journey, the other a fun action flick with no thoughts needed.

Sheesh! Cry me a river will ya' tp4ever84?
He's being "thumbed down" because it all sounds pretty crybaby-ish.
He sounds like the typical Nolan fan who can't accept the fact that a superhero movie may very well surpass the next Batman film and "reign" king of "superhero movies" for a long time. He's trying to pass his OPINIONS for FACTS and they facts they are not. They are just that, his opinions.
He reminds me of two friends of mine who refuse to go see Avengers because they don't want it

I don't like Nolan's Batman. I kinda hate Bale as an actor all together. But heck I'll still pay to go see TDKR because as much as I hated Begins I liked TDK.
And in the end, why does it matter to some people who makes more money and for what reasons? It's not as if we had any stakes/shares in them. We don't get a dollar out of all the billion they make. No, what we get is to see more and more of them, and that's what count. Not being a whiny annoying fanboy. Just be the fanboy who's happy to get 4 or 5 well done comic book movies a year now (and I know that "well done" here can be argued on some).

Oh, and fyi, I didn't walk out in amazement at how real Two Face's cgied face looked. Or how believaable Batman's hummer looked when it was jumping from rooftop to rooftop. And the part where the whole "real life practicality" of a crime fighter running around with a CAPE was pretty believable. Well those were some of my opinions. Not facts. Won't try to make them pass for anything else.

John Matrix said it perfect.. Those are your opinions you are passing along as facts.. Just because a moveie has less CGI does not automatically make it better. The Avengers needed the CGI. Batman doesn't need as much because he's just a man jumping on rooftops in a Bat costume.. And that my friend is a fact.. And I am the biggest Bat Man fan so there is no Bias here.. Love both movies.

Comparing TDKR to Avengers is like comparing Alien to ET, I agree, but like others have said below, you're trying too hard to validate TDKR's awesomeness and you're coming off as a defensive Nolanite. Take it easy, bud, they're both cool. Some movies need CGI, others don't as much. And by the way, Nolan uses a ton of CGI, it's just that he uses them in ways that you never really see them. They're not meant for eye-candy, is what I'm saying, but that doesn't mean it's not there.

The Dark Night Rises vs. Avengers. I hope both films do well because they may be same in super hero movies but there going to be different take on it. TDKR is more film and avengers is more of slam bang type of movie. it's like apple and oranges

wheedon

Love Nolan, Raimi and Wheedon, though I'm disappointed that Joss didn't at least acknowledge Donner - who established the first Superhero flick. Even Raimi has acknowledged Donner's contribution in the past.

why not both?

Congrats to whedon, I may have only gotten into his story 3-4 years ago but he is a true fanboys filmmaker.

Why can't he write and direct movies and produce tv shows on the side. JJ Abbrams style

2014: Air Bud!
2016: Avengers2!

Why not try to juggle both?

He can certainly take a page from JJ Abrams and create more awesome shows, as well as do passion film projects (not just summer tentpoles) which he would previously had financial difficulties. Give us your Prestige or Inception, Joss! Oh, and another scifi western show if you can.

Joss, big man on campus

Finally, the world has seen (some more than once) the power that is Joss Whedon. As great as the actors and actresses are in The Avengers, it takes a real director to harness them. Very, very good for him.
Attention Marvel: Don't be stupid. Hire this man for the sequel. RIGHT NOW!!!

This guy is awesome

Everything he does and says personifies coolness. His comment about Nolan and Raimi was spot on, I've enjoyed the shit out of the Avengers and I'll enjoy TDKR come July.

This competition is stupid, these are two very different movies.

Per Tidbit: I like his TV work but after Avengers, I'd bet two outcomes smaller films or TV shows until then or taking a long break before Avengers 2.
