Joss Whedon wants Avengers 2 to be "smaller"

Mar. 8, 2012by:

According to Joss Whedon, it isn't the size that counts, especially with the probable sequel to THE AVENGERS.  He wants the hypothetical follow up to be "smaller, more personal, more painful."

"I want to know what makes them tick, what makes them flawed, what makes them fight - and ultimately, what makes them awesome," he explained. "I go to these movies for those moments when the heroes define themselves, either through action or deliciously overwritten speeches."

The prospect of spending more time learning about each character's quirks and weaknesses will definitely make for a better film experience, but can there possibly be enough screen time for Black Widow to deal with her daddy issues or Tony Stark to drink himself into oblivion?

I have faith in Whedon's ability to bring THE AVENGERS to the big screen.  The trailers have given me nothing but positive vibes on the film, but I have the same apprehensions that he has mentioned.  Just like the Schumacher BATMAN films collapsed under too many villains, it is entirely possible that this movie may feel like a Cliff's Notes version of an actual story.  Most comic book arcs take place over several monthly releases and not just a single contained issue.

I guess all that we can do at this point is cross our fingers and wait for May 4th to roll around to see what needs fixing.

Extra Tidbit: I vote for Neil Patrick Harris to play a villain in THE AVENGERS 2.

I believe in Whedon to do a great movie, with a good balance between characterisation and action... He's done it before. But give him the time to do it (at least 2 1/2 Hours). BTW, nie shot of American Dream (the Cap America from an alternate future's Avengers team called Avengers Next... In this future Wolverine has a daughter with Elektra)

NONE of you can see what he's aiming for?

You guys can't see that he's angling for one of the best story lines to date? "Avengers, Disassembled!" #facepalm

SOOOO... He must introduce Scarlett Witch, The Vision, Mephisto (owned by Sony for Ghost Rider) for the twins, Miss Hulk... Basically the WHOLE Marvel Universe... At the BEGINNING of A2... So, who's up for a 4hours long Avengers film... You know what, I'm SOLD to this idea!!!

Yeah right--Marvel will probably want an "Avengers" sequel to be stuffed with action and SFX--not quiet character moments. Though Iron Man II had a few.
Also--can we please get Taskmaster as a side villain in the next movie? That would be the shit.

The solo films are where we learn the characters. The Avengers is where we see them join, hold hands, and battle some giant fucking aliens.

This big headed asshat....

cant handle the job, it's obvious. Did Jackson say, lets make LOTR look like Narnia? This probably need more epicness, more heroes (full roster) vs more foes (scrulls) or even each other (civil war), but smaller? This guy is a fraud.

Maybe should you wait to see the film to judge Whedon's job on it, don't you think?...

RED FLAG

let this stand as the first public acknowledgement by the makers of this film that it is a bloated, bombastic spectacle of a movie. when a director comes out and says he wants a "smaller" movie next time, that is not a good sign. maybe he should go back to t.v. Firefly is not Alias, just like the Avengers will not be Star Trek.

Whedon just keeps saying the right things.

When it comes to (superhero) sequels, the biggest problem always is too much story/action and not enough characterization.

Perfect example of this is Iron Man and IM 2.

But wouldn't we learn why they fight and why they are flawed in future solo avenger films? I have no problem with Avengers 2 doing this, it's just that I thought the solo avengers sequels that come out after this would elaborate on this a bit more.

Have Hulk go against The Avengers in the sequel.

Extra tidbit.
As a villain I'd like to see NPH as kang the conqueror or maybe a bit more corny but the Space Phantom so we can have a Hulk vs Avengers fight.
My own tidbit: Neil Patrick Harris as a hero: Ant Man. I'm sure he'd be a great Ant Man.

Avengers vs. Hulk

If they're going to make a second Avengers movie, then they defiantly have to have Hulk vs. the Avengers. you get 3 Epic Battles, IM vs. Hulk, Thor vs. Hulk, then The Avengers vs Hulk all in one movie.. and you sideline whatever villain survives in the first Avengers movie to tie into the final battle of when Hulk's fighting the Avengers.

i get why you would say that.. but Epic battles don't mean less personal. At least in the Comics, its very personal on why Hulk fights Iron Man, Thor, and the Avengers.
and nothing is more personal when friends fight each other. And other friends have to pick a side, or have conflicting feelings if its the rite thing to do, so the storyline is nothing short of personal, and more close to home. And with this story line you get that personal touch, and Epic battles. Make no mistake, if the

"By being the next thing that should happen to these characters, and not just a rehash of what seemed to work the first time. By having a theme that is completely fresh and organic to itself."

That's why THIS film is going to be great as well. Joss knows how to write character first and foremost.

I can see that working. My memory is a bit foggy on details, but I know the Hulk has gotten out of control in the comics and been an enemy to the Avengers. Going with something like that would keep it "smaller" and give more charactery things to do with Hulk out of control (for whatever reason) and the rest of the Avengers trying to stop him without killing/seriously hurting him. It would certainly go in the opposite direction of the usual super-hero movie sequel routine of "bigger everything

Saying Lifetime movies feature deep character analysis gives way too much credit to lifetime movies.

Deep character analysis isn't exactly what I look for in a superhero movie.

If I want that, I'll throw on Lifetime.

Extended Edition DVDs

With a film like this, I would really love for them to create Extended Edition DVDs much like Lord of the Rings. Make a good theatrical cut for the general audience, and release an extended cut for fans of the source material and have interest in seeing those back stories fleshed out a little more. With a devoted fan base already lined up for this movie there wouldn't be a concern about loosing money, so I have no idea why it shouldn't happen.

Do it for the WHOLE MARVEL STUDIOS brand: they where REALLY NICE deleted scenes in IM & 1 2, Inc. Hulk, Thor & Cap Am... I see a BIG BR (because NOW, if you want the extended cuts, you HAVE to buy the BR)box with all the movies in extended cuts... LET ME DREAM dammit!
