Before JUDGE DREDD was a horrible Sylvester Stallone movie, it was a rather awesome comic with the potential for greatness. The remake of the film is trying to realize that, and in an attempt to further distance themselves from the original film, they've now retitled their version DREDD, which if I didn't know any better, might sound like the tale of a pirate ship with a crew who didn't know how to spell.

The film stars Karl Urban and now Olivia Thirlby, and with this title change comes an official synopsis, the first we've seen from the project.

DREDD takes us to the wild streets of Mega City One, the lone oasis of quasi-civilization on Cursed Earth. Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) is the most feared of elite Street Judges, with the power to enforce the law, sentence offenders and execute them on the spot - if necessary. The endlessly inventive mind of writer Alex Garland and the frenetic vision of director Peter Travis bring DREDD to life as a futuristic neo-noir action film that returns the celebrated character to the dark, visceral incarnation from John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra’s revered comic strip.

Note again the reference to the original comic. This synopsis is pretty damn light on any plot details, but serves to reinforce that this version is going dark rather than campy, a vision we can hopefully all appreciate. I'll be skeptical until I see a trailer though.

let's hope this movie delivers, despite its budget (I'm note sure they can give this movie the money it needs). As for the Stalone version, I hope we will, some day, see the REAL cut of the movie, far more violent and far better (if we're to believe the few people who saw it before Disney edited it).

I didn't think the Stallone version was all that bad. It had Diane Lane(HOT), what killed it for me was that copy machine guy from SNL, Rob what's his name. I like Urban for the reboot.

Um
Yeah, I don't get it. I liked parts of Stallone's movie and I want this one to be good, but this is not like calling a Batman film "The Dark Knight." It's actually a lot lazier and less expressive.

Love the cast, love the plot. At some point in the movie I'm pretty sure they'll refer to him as Judge Dredd and if they don't it's no skin off my back. I actually am an unapologetic fan of the Stallone movie too, I even have the novelization and Graphic Novel of it. I hope Urban sounds badass when he says "I am the Law".

Not sure about "Dredd" as a title, but at least it's not "Dredd!" because then it would have to be a musical. Not sure the world's quite ready for a futuristic fascist cop breaking into song. (although worse ideas for films get made all the time)

Original Dredd
I bought the original issue 2 of 2000AD where Dredd launched and to be honest, it was always obvious he should be played by Clint Eastwood! Too late?

Actually...
I enjoyed the Stallone version. I liked all his kind of crazy future movies. I guess I enjoy mindless action flicks.

Be honest.
The Stallone Judge Dredd was DOPE!!! But that being said, it would be cool to see it done more seriously.

Yes but...
The Stallone version sucked, no doubt. It was more of a parody of itself than anything else. Whereas the original comic was a great satire full of action, ridiculous characters but it knew what it was, it was inherently gritty but really funny. I'm worried that they're going to try and pull some kind of Dark Knight ripoff and miss the punch-line that Judge Dredd was actually a satire of those...
