Judi Dench joins Clint Eastwood’s J. Edgar, Charlize Theron looking likely

Last we heard regarding Clint Eastwood’s upcoming J. Edgar Hoover biopic J. EDGAR, we learned that impressive SOCIAL NETWORK double-performer Armie Hammer would be joining the cast that’s being lead by Leonardo DiCaprio. We also heard that Charlize Theron was offered the part of Hoover’s personal secretary Helen Gandy. So what’s new?

Talking to SandwichJohnFilms (now that’s a movie website name!) while on the red carpet for his California Hall of Fame induction, Eastwood revealed that actress Judi Dench (MY WEEK WITH MARILYN, JANE EYRE) would be part of the film, and that he “thinks” Charlize Theron will be as well:

“We think she will be in the film (with a smile). And Judi Dench is definitely in the film and there we are.”

No word on what role Dench would play. Theron, meanwhile, is up for the part of Helen Gandy, “a Justice Department file clerk Hoover selected as his personal secretary at the age of 21, and who wound up working for him for over 54 years.” Theron has to basically choose between J. EDGAR and SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN, both of which begin filming this coming February. Judging from Eastwood’s comment (and smile), it would seem that Theron is leaning towards the Oscar bait rather than the fairy tale.
