Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke may reunite with Richard Linklater for whatever comes after Before Sunset

Nov. 21, 2011by: Niki Stephens

One of my movie obsessions is the story of BEFORE SUNRISE and BEFORE SUNSET. I could watch both of those back to back a million times in one day. There's something about the relationship between Celine (Julie Delpy) and Jesse (Ethan Hawke) that keeps me interested in their on-going conversations throughout both movies.

The nine year mark is nearing from when SUNSET was made. So is it time to find out what happened in Celine's apartment after the movie ends? It's possible according to Hawke, "Well, I don't know what we're going to do but I know the three of us have been talking a lot in the last six months. All of three of us have been having similar feelings that we're ready to revisit those characters. There's nine years between the first two movies and, if we made the film next summer, it would be nine years again so we're really started thinking that would be a good thing to do. We're going to try write it this year."

While I could live with the ending to SUNSET for the rest of my life, I would be interested in seeing what fate has in store for my favorite uncouple. Maybe another long conversation set in the states? Celine could come to visit Jesse. I wonder what Jesse said to his wife when he got home. There's a million possibilities. Life is swell like that.

Extra Tidbit: What would they title this one?

They should do this every nine years until one of them dies in real life. Would love seeing these characters at 80 still having their incredible conversations.

Bring on the minuses

I dunno, I loved the first two, but this seems completely unnecessary to me. It almost defeats the purpose of the whole 'one night only' thing that makes the movie so charming if it keeps happening over and over again.

Also, the first sequel felt natural. To me, this one feels like 'why not? we have nothing else to do that people want to see'.

Although the entire movie is one long conversation, both Before Sunrise and Before Sunset never felt bore. I'm game with another movie. As for the new title, "After Midnight" or "Before Dawn", perhaps?

Please don't. ☹

Before Sunrise and Before Sunset are in my Top 10 and I feel as though Before Sunset was the PERFECT ending. I love those movies because they feel so natural and real. Like you're watching a documentary. If they make another one it will be VERY HARD to stay away and not watch it. It might be great, but I LOVE how Before Sunset ended.

Commented on the wrong story - now I can't delete this post.
I haven't seen these movies - but they probably deal with similar crises, right?

Feeling torn

While I love the two first movies and would love to see what happens next, I too feel the ending to Before Sunset was perfect. With that said, I don't think Linklater, Delpy & Hawke would make another sequel if they didn't think there was more of Celine & Jesse's story to tell. As for the possible title, I rather like "Breaking Dawn". Anyone?
