Jurassic Park 3D to play in IMAX for a special one-week engagement

Jan. 9, 2013by: Paul Shirey

Well, now.  My desire to see JURASSIC PARK 3D on the big screen once again has just gone up a notch.  I could give a shit about the 3D, because really it would just be cool to see the film on the big screen again (and to experience it with my kid for the first time will likely be cool), but now to expand it in IMAX?  Yes.  Yes, I think so.

In the past I've been less than enthused about seeing older films redistributed, but the more I think about it, the cooler it is.  To experience our old favorites on the big screen again is a great thing and, honestly, I don't care if studios do it to make some extra coin.  Who cares?  It's a win for all of us in my book.

Here's the official word:

"IMAX Corporation and Universal Pictures today announced that Steven Spielberg’s epic Jurassic Park will return to the big screen with a one-week 3D engagement in IMAX® theatres worldwide simultaneous with the film's wide release beginning April 5, 2013.

With his remastering of this epic film into a state-of-the-art 3D format, Steven Spielberg introduces the three-time Academy Award®-winning blockbuster to a new generation of moviegoers and allows longtime fans to experience the world he envisioned in a way that was unimaginable during the film’s original release. Starring Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, Samuel L. Jackson and Richard Attenborough, the film based on the novel by Michael Crichton is produced by Kathleen Kennedy and Gerald R. Molen.

"Jurassic Park is the quintessential film for fans to experience in IMAX 3D," said Nikki Rocco, President of Distribution, Universal Pictures. "Jurassic Park was groundbreaking when it was originally released, and The IMAX 3D Experience® will allow today’s audiences to become fully immersed in one of the most breathtaking epics Universal has ever released."

"Steven Spielberg’s films resonate uniquely with audiences,"
said Greg Foster, Chairman and President of IMAX Filmed Entertainment. "We're thrilled to offer moviegoers an opportunity to see this fan favorite back on the big screen and transport them - for the first time through the power of The IMAX 3D Experience® - into the world of Jurassic Park."

The IMAX release of Jurassic Park has been digitally re-mastered into the image and sound quality of The IMAX 3D Experience® with proprietary IMAX DMR® (Digital Re-mastering) technology. The crystal-clear images, coupled with IMAX’s customized theatre geometry and powerful digital audio, create a unique environment that will make audiences feel as if they are in the movie."

JURASSIC PARK 3D will play in IMAX beginning on April 5, 2013 (with Tom Cruise's OBLIVION opening just after) for one week, running simultaneously with the wide release.

Ugh.

I love people rush to bash the 3d conversion then get all excited to see the same movie stretched across an i max screen in which it was never meant to fit. Lets just hook the vcr up to an hdtv.

Yes. There is a smaller IMAX theater near me, but I'm hitting Navy Pier for this.

I'm so down for this...

One of my favorite films. It doesn't matter: I'll pay the 3-D surcharge, just as long as I get to see this baby on the big screen.

what the hell

I remember hearing it was going to be in IMAX 3D a while back, but assumed it was a true IMAX release, not a limited one week engagement that will probably not even play in my city (which has two IMAX theatres) just like Raiders didn't. I'm going to be so pissed if it doesn't, this is actually one of my top most anticipated movies this year haha, I want to see it in IMAX 3D so bad, but I just have a bad feeling that we'll get screwed over again...

Can't believe I get to experience this in theaters again, 20 years later. So good

Man I wish this was just converted to 4K/IMAX instead of 3D. It would be one of my most anticipated theater events of the year.

The T-Rex scene alone would be worth admission. If my theater is playing Jurassic Park I will definitely go see it. It's a classic.
