The year is basically over, and the DCEU’s big films have come and gone with mixed reception. Some complained about BATMAN V.SUPERMAN’s bleak tone, and while SUICIDE SQUAD has a far less heavy feel people still had some issues. Regardless of which style you think is better it seems Warner Bros. will put more of their focus into ensuring their future movies feel more like the latter.
During an in-depth interview with THR, producer Charles Roven (who will produce all of the DCEU films) spoke a bit to the difference in tone between BVS and the upcoming JUSTICE LEAGUE:
We knew we were making a very serious, compelling, driving film with Batman v. Superman. Now the bell has been rung and the whole tone of the movie is lighter.
As for the movie that comes next, WONDER WOMAN (with Gal Gadot), Roven explained why he thinks it will be a much different experience for DC fans:
Wonder Woman is an origination story, so the whole dynamic and the plot moves are different than other DC movies. There's also a great relationship between her and the guy [Chris Pine] who crash-lands on her island and is the trigger mechanism for her going back to man's world.
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard folks talk about LEAGUE this way, but every now and again I like to hear it come out of people’s mouths. Some people like the more serious tone of the DC movies, but I feel like something is lost in the process of being so doom-laden. The movie was a hit though, so I may be in the minority. WONDER WOMAN looks like it will be a heck of a lotta’ fun, so maybe the studio really does want the movies to feel lighter. But it’s whatever. Dark, light, it’s all good as long as the movie is good, and for DC’s sake JUSTICE LEAGUE better be. Sorry…holidays got me on edge.
JUSTICE LEAGUE is set for November 28 while WONDER WOMAN hits June 2.
