Just last week we caught wind of a shortlist of directors that were in consideration to helm STAR TREK 3. Roberto Orci left the director's chair but will stay on as co-writer and producer, but it looks like Paramount Pictures and J.J. Abrams have come to an agreement and chosen uber-director of most of the FAST AND THE FURIOUS films, Justin Lin! Lin was set to direct the follow-up to THE BOURNE LEGACY, however that was pushed back due to Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon's renewed interest in the series. This opened up Lin's schedule and it looks like he'll now lend his sleek, directorial stylings to the Sci-Fi franchise that isn't STAR WARS.

The Fast and Furious franchise started with a "been there, done that" premise and took a left turn at Albuquerque into some ridiculously fun popcorn entertainment. While the latest Trek entries haven't been as thought-provoking as previous films (or episodes for that matter), there's no denying that Lin knows how to work with a great ensemble group and deliver what Abrams' Trek films have been aiming for.  In any event, I'm really excited to see what another director can do with Trek!

Justin Lin's STAR TREK 3 is looking to be released sometime in 2016.
