Justin Lin will direct Jeremy Renner in the fifth Bourne movie

Nov. 8, 2013by: Alex Maidy

After his phenomenal success on the last four FAST AND FURIOUS movies, director Justin Lin has been linked to almost every high profile project since. Those rumors have come and gone, but we now know what the next movie will be for the in demand filmmaker.

Deadline is reporting that Justin Lin will helm the untitled sequel to THE BOURNE LEGACY featuring Jeremy Renner reprising his role of Aaron Cross. This will mark the fifth entry in the franchise and the second without Matt Damon in the lead. Rumors have long circulated that Renner and Damon may share the screen in a BOURNE film but they have so far not come to fruition. Maybe THE BOURNE LEGACY sequel will be that film.

Lin replaces Tony Gilroy who directed THE BOURNE LEGACY. While that film was a modest success for Universal, it did not fare nearly as well as the three Matt Damon films. But, Lin re-invigorated the Vin Diesel series with FAST FIVE that changed the focus from racing to heists. Hopefully he can do the same for BOURNE and deliver something that freshens up the franchise.

I would rank the different Bourne directors in the same order as release, 1-4, which come to think of it is the same order I would rate them best to worst.
Not a big Paul Greengrass fan, shooting movies almost like a fake documentary, meaning capturing a realistic but underwhelmingly boring perspective of people with boring jobs while having Michael J. Fox do your camerawork. Haven't seen the new Tom Hanks movie yet, but I did see one of his first films, it was about a march down a street in

Fox do your camerawork. Haven't seen the new Tom Hanks movie yet, but I did see one of his first films, it was about a march down a street in England or something, I watched it film season because if the hype the film had going and I thought it was one of the boringest movies I've seen, so boring I have forgot the title and don't care enough to google it. He took alot of the cool and excitement out of the Bourne films and replaced them with a realistic vibe/boring vibe (ppl at desks doing nothing), while I do give his 2 entries a passing mark, they don't come close to the first one... Where is Doug Liman btw? Ironic because Matt Damon is one of my all time fav actors and Greengrass is his favorite director to work with lol.

Lin has directed one good movie, better luck tomorrow, good little film, while I enjoyed 1 of his Fast movies, I can't argue than any of them were good.

bullshit

The Bourne legacy was very well done all around and clever. I think the editing was not well thought out or pushed too much to look and run like the originals when what was called for a different dynamic.

He is a very good action director. People are freaking out over nothing. What we really need to know is who is writing the script.

This isn't a knock against Lin, but his specialty seems to be action movies that aren't exactly clever, and the Bourne films should have a bit of an intelligent streak to them. Still, he definitely knows his way around an action sequence and I do want to see what he does with this series. And please find a way to get Matt Damon back in the mix!

I can see this Bourne series heading to Direct-DVD in a very short amount of years. Justin Lin is OK but the guy's movies are all WOW and no substance. The integrity and edge brought to the BOURNE franchise by Greengrass and Damon will all be a distant memory. Well, I guess this is Hollywood and it IS all about the almighty dollar after all.

Wasn't asking for another Aaron Cross, and even more skeptical about Lin as a director. While his Fast and Furious are greatly entertaining, he just wouldn't be a good fit for the more subdued and grittier Bourne franchise.

Can't say I cared much for the Bourne-less Bourne movie. I Liked Lin's work in the F&F series, but those films are more guilty pleasures. I just don't think there's more to do with the Cross character that I would find interesting. Anyway, I'm pretty sure Damon said he'd only come back with Greengrass as director, and since that isn't happening there won't be a cross-over, which is the only reason anyone was somewhat interested in a sequel.

I wasn't terribly impressed with the last one, but it certainly had its moments and was decent enough. I think there's plenty of room for improvement, so I don't find it such a bad idea to keep going with it.

I'm down with this! After seeing what he did with Fast and Furious I have total faith that he can turn out something great with a Bourne movie. Reinvigorating it, I find doubtful. The Bourne franchise isn't something that needs re-tooling. It's something the movie execs want to exploit to eak out more profits. There was nothing wrong with the Damon centric films that need to be re-tooled. This will be a great action movie, but I am doubtful this will be a breakaway hit for the franchise

I liked the Bourne Legacy, but something was missing that made the first three so enjoyable and exciting. Maybe a better story or a couple of more action scenes would have made the film a little better. But since it was the starting point for a new agent, it was a nice origins film.

I'm hoping Lin is going to surprise us with something fresh and new this time around. He is more than capable of doing so and if he can get Damon to jump on board and for Norton to return even better.

I wish I could upvote enough times to get a positive number. MIght have been a little harsh on the writer, but you're spot on about the Boune Legacy.

First of all kiddo, when you are going to criticize someone on their writing, make sure you write that criticism well, as in grammatically correct, which you didn't. Tell me, what is poorly written about this article? It's not going to win an award, but it's short and to the point. It explains what's been going on with Lin, what's been going on with the Bourne franchise, and states what they are about to do with it. I'll even give the author props for not making the article longer by trying
I'll even give the author props for not making the article longer by trying to add his own sense of "style" and humor, or by adding his opinion on Lin taking on this project, the last Bourne film, or the last Fast films. He just states the facts and gets out of the way, which is appropriate for this announcement. Later on he can write an editorial on what he thinks of this film, or any of those other aspects, but here he's professional. Those facts include that this will be the second sequel without Damon (which as far as we know, early on in this production, is fact), but that there have been rumors of Damon joining with Renner, so the author states that there's a chance that maybe that could happen in this film. So, as someone who has personally written some very harsh comments about the poor writing on this site, I would really like to know what's wrong with this article and, specifically, how you would make it better? Every time I've criticized an article on here I've also been rude about it, but at least I explained why it was poorly written. Can you either give me three reasons why this is poorly written, or write it better? Also, what qualifications do you have that show you know how to write? I am really not even sure you know how to read (or at least comprehend, I suppose that's different than just reading the words) since you somehow finished this article thinking that "we may see [Renner and Damon] in legacy," when the author writes we may see them in the legacy sequel. So, either you can't read, comprehend, or you are a complete fucking idiot (and I am going to bet it's a little of all three since anyone can get on the internet and write comments). By all means, when these people write poorly, talk bad to them. There really is no excuse for them not to be able to write these small articles well, and especially not to proofread one time, but do it when they actually write bad articles. Thank you!
