Justin Timberlake pushing for an Oscar nom for his turn in The Social Network

11.30.2010

We all know THE SOCIAL NETWORK is going to be awards bait in a number of categories, Picture, Director (Fincher), Screenplay (Sorkin), Actor (Eisenberg) and probably Supporting Actor (Garfield). But apparently that's not quite enough for Justin Timberlake, who wants in on the fun and is reportedly "pushing" for a Supporting Actor nomination himself.

As this is from Page Six, proceed with caution, but reportedly Timberlake is putting the work in to get in good with Hollywood and secure a nom.

He’s hell-bent on getting a nomination this year even though he has tough competition from his co-star Andrew Garfield. Sony is footing the bill for advertising the awards campaign, but Justin is also doing things his own way, including attending Academy screenings on his own and privately reaching out to award winners and Academy darlings Tom Hanks and Kevin Spacey for campaigning advice.

So the question is, do you think he deserves it? THE SOCIAL NETWORK is full of great performances, and I would say Timberlake's is one of them, as he reminds of a lot of slick Silicon Valley types I used to know. But good enough for nomination? I'm not so sure. Besides, the clear frontrunner is said to be Christian Bale, who yet again drastically transformed himself physically for THE FIGHTER. But I'm sure Timberlake just wants to be advertised in future projects as "Academy Award Nominee Justin Timberlake."

I think he's a good actor and has a future, but is his time now?

Extra Tidbit: I'd almost push for Armie Hammer (who played both twins in the movie) over him.

In all honesty.....yeah give it to him. That might open the door for him to take more dramatic and ballsy rolls. Hell, his screen time here made up for a rather lack luster performance in "Alpha Dog". He won't win though....especially if Tom Hardy picks up a Supporting Actor nom for Inception

Timberlake was pretty good...

...but when compared to the rest of the cast, his wasn't a "standout" performance. He was fine (probably his best role so far), but it's not like he had to do any of the heavy lifting acting-wise; his character was just along for the ride, so to speak. And even if he was nominated, it's not like he would win anyway; as it's been said, Renner, Bale, Murray and Rush are all more likely frontrunners.

Look. It's the best thing he's done in his career by far, and I do understand it is a business and with him getting a nom his career will sky rocket as an actor. But I would NEVER EVER go out and campaign myself. If you don't get a nom then work harder, but you shouldn't be working for a nom, so maybe this guy is in the acting biz for the wrong reasons if ya think about it.

Wait !

wow! the first real movie Timberlake has done and he wants an oscar right away, what the heck?! Timberlake needs to make a couple of good solid movies before he can be oscar worthy.. I still see him as the former member of a boy band, trying to be an actor.
Dont get me wrong, I dont hate Justin Timberlake, I just dont think he has achieved oscar nomination status, yet.

but I think his role as Boo-Boo in that abortion of a Yogi Bear movie should negate any good role he played.

Whatever... He was in a handful of scenes and was nothing amazing. He read his lines and wasn't obviously playing Justin Timberlake. Does that really deserve an Oscar?

No doubt he was great in the movie. But with all the competition from his costars...I will say that I think a celebrity like Timberlake, who isn't yet a household acting name, was a perfect fit for the Silicon Valley celebrity Sean Parker.

Quite frankly, although not knowing other runner-ups, Timberlake should get the nom. One of the first things my girlfriend and I said to each other after seeing the film was how shocked we were with Timberlake's performance. It was...good, like, really good. He definitely deserves the nod. I hope TSN gets strongs legs at the Oscars this year.

Maybe if there were 10 . . .

Eisenberg deserves a nom for best actor and garfield for best supporting but I don't know about Timberlake. If they can only choose 5 from this year I don't think he will be chosen out of all of the good performances so far this year.

Meh...

One hell of a movie, one hell of a script and plenty of great performances, but I'm not sure if Timberlake's was the best. Hammer certainly showed us we need to start paying attention to him, though.

Garfield was definitely better, but Timberlake's star power may surpass him to clinch the nomination. I don't think he deserves it, but hey, I'm not part of the Academy.

Bill Murray for Get Low (because he's Bill Murray), Jeremy Renner for The Town (because he was nominated last year and was the juiciest role in Affleck's successful film), Geoffrey Rush for The King's Speech (because he's a legend and in an awards-magnet period piece), and Mark Ruffalo in The Kids Are All Right (turning what could have been a phone-in performance into a multi-layered and conflicted human being). Frankly, I think The Fighter is just going to fizzle out come Awards Season.

Even still, it's very possible that BOTH Garfield and Timberlake would get nominated. I just don't see Bale in the mix here.

Yo and Winter's Bone has been making some serious rounds at the awards, and John Hawkes could nab a spot. It's a good year for Supporting. My money's on Rush or Garfield.

JT's not a horrible actor, but I find in movies like Alpha Dog and Social Network he was only playing modified versions of himself. Sean Parker is rich and likes to party with hot girls, wow JT that must have been such a stretch for you. You definitely deserve a nomination. Man, I'm really glad he didn't get cast as Green Lantern.

When actors really want an Oscar they sure as Hell suck up and campaign, in their own ways. When Jamie Foxx was in the running for RAY you couldn't turn on the TV without seeing the guy on some show like The View or Ellen, making it seem like he's such a sweet guy and so talented at everything. Not that he's NOT a nice guy, and not that his performance in Ray wasn't good...but it was blatantly obvious he wanted to be in the Academy's consciousness and I guess it paid off. Kind of shameless. The Social Network is the second best film of the year (Inception). Great performances, great script, brilliantly acted, amazingly well directed. JT is a surprisingly good actor (This and Alpha Dog) but award worthy, not really. I like the guy but it really seems weird to push yourself for an award, especially when others in the movie deserve it more.

He was good but...

He was good in the Social Network but so were the others. It is possible that he could slip in there but I think in the future he can be nominated for one. This is not the year to push for a nomination because I have to say there were a lot of performances that were better than his. This year is tough competition in all categories. He should wait he will get his just not this year it's too competitive.

I don't see it happening no matter how hard he pushes himself, which is a pretentious thing to do anyway.

It's Fincher & Sorkin's movie. And if anyone deserves an award acting-wise it's Jesse Eisenberg. He owned that role.

Only a little longer

I like that he cares about his acting career, and is willing to put in all this work to try and get a nom. But at the same time, like most said it's pretty sad that he's taking it upon himself to practically nominate himself when he may not deserve it.

I have yet to see The Social Network, but I know his performance in Alpha Dog really surprised me, as well as a few other movies. He definitely has a future in acting, and hopefully this little stunt doesn't prevent him from finding more work

Best Bet is that Bale is going to be nominated and win for The Fighter. He is due for one.

I never saw The Social Network so I really can't say anything about him in the movie, but I think he was good in Alpha Dog and that's it. He looked good in The Social Network trailer, but anyone could have played his role. It's also kind of sad how he is pushing himself for his own nomination. Kind of shallow.

While I have a lot of faith in Timberlake as an actor, I don't think his turn in The Social Network, while excellent, is oscar worthy. Garfield and Hammer deserve the nod way more than him. But I'm sure his time will come and, with the proper role and the proper director, he'll have his Jennifer Hudson moment one of these days...

I presume you are inferring that J-Hud did not in any way shape or form deserve her Oscar and that her acting was in fact atrocious and she only won for her singing ability, which isn't the same thing as acting and that her win is one of the great travesties in the history of the Oscars? Yes, I presume this is what you inferred by 'his Jennifer Hudson moment'. By the way; Justin Timberlake, while not award worthy, is already ten gajillion times the actor she is.

No, by Jennifer Hudson moment, I meant a singer turned actor who, under good direction and with a proper role, might have a good chance at winning an Oscar. I haven't seen Dreamgirls so I can't judge if she deserved it or not.

I could've easily said a "Cher moment" or a "Barbara Streisand moment" also.
