Karate Kid sequel already underway?

Jun. 16, 2010by: George Merchan
Somewhat surprisingly, THE KARATE KID kung-fu'd its way this past weekend to some really impressive box office numbers (blowing THE A-TEAM clean out of the water by about $30 mil). Considering that the film - which is at about $62 million right now - ran clean past its reported $40 million budget, the prospect of a KARATE KID 2 was pretty much a given.

Well now Mike Fleming at Deadline is confirming that. His sources are saying that Sony execs are now meeting with writers to pitch ideas on where exactly to take the second installment.

Inevitable, I guess. On the plus side, THE KARATE KID has been generally well-received by both critics and audiences alike (though I keep hearing that it could lose about 30 minutes of footage and not suffer a thing). But where could a sequel go? Let us know what you think below.
Extra Tidbit: Could any KARATE KID sequel possibly be better than this? No.

The Empire Strikes Back. Some old chinese imperial soldiers try spreading their evil rule across China, and the Karate Kid must defend the innocent villagers from them. Jackie Chan trains him to fight, before he leaves to save his friends on Cloud City, um, wait, what was I talking about again?

While I enjoyed the movie, I don't really think a sequel is necessary.

However, I hope that they take their time and make the sequel better than the first film.

i haven't seen this movie yet...

but maybe in part 2, we find out that jackie chan's original protege from many years ago has turned evil and come back to kill jackie chan. now it's up to Dre to fight the old nemesis and avenge his late master's death.

i dont think any martial arts movies have done that yet.

I Don't Know What's Worse...

People who think this isn't a great idea (the movie was excellent!) or that adults have just completely become out of touch with what's hip. The fact is, this movie was good, and it's aimed at the younger audience who will inevitably be taking over YOUR world (how you like THEM apples?)

Jokes aside, I want to see a sequel, but nothing rushed. Take your time, make sure it's worth our time. Films like this are allowed to have great first films, but RAPIDPLY fall into the bad sequel syndrome in

(Karate Kid 2-3 anyone?)

bad idea, but good maybe

Well, bad idea from a movie perspective, but hey maybe these movies will help our fatass lazy uncoordinated kids to go outside and do something like martial arts or gymnastics! But most likely they would quit after a month, seeing how training isn't like Jackie Chans.

Just an idea...

Dre could fight a bully named Snoop. Han's old arch rival Greedo comes into play somewhere and we find out Dre and the 7 year old asian girl he is in love with both are infected with some kind of disease.

In the next one he should move to California and run up against a hot shot karate prep and his gang. That would be cool.

I know a couple of under-10-year-olds in my family that are going to do back flips over this.

Anyone over 12 poo-pooing this needs to sit down and remind themselves this movie isn't aimed at them.

They could call it, I guess..

ďKarate Kid 2: The Kung Fu KidĒ which would set us up nicely for the third movie...ĒThe Kung Fu Kid: What it should have been called in the first placeĒ. :o)

Old? Nope, he's wearing scary make-up. Clearly you're too young to know which film the photo comes from. What you call "old", the rest of the world refers to as an "adult".

if you were as adult as you say you would realize this is a kid's movie and you just come off as a crotchety geezer. the "keep off my lawn" type. I actually have a daughter old enough to love this movie and Jaden... so i knew it was going to be a hit... and old dudes with black and white avatars would cry over their shat upon childhoods.

Please keep your comments limited to Chaplin and the Our gang series.
thanks
