Kevin Costner drops out of Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained?

Sep. 16, 2011by: George Merchan

The most intriguing bit of casting on Quentin Tarantino's DJANGO UNCHAINED has reportedly been undone.

According to a tweet from Variety reporter Justin Kroll, Kevin Costner (MAN OF STEEL) - originally set play the villainous 'Ace Woody', a man who would train slaves to fight in brutal matches for entertainment - has backed out of his role due to the always dreaded "scheduling conflicts". If the conflict is a with another film, you have to wonder what project could possibly make an actor drop an against-type role in a f*cking Tarantino film.

As it currently stands, though, DJANGO UNCHAINED is still boasting the very impressive likes of Jamie Foxx in the film's title role, Leonardo DiCaprio as the main villain, BASTERDS alum Christoph Waltz, and the recently confirmed Samuel L. Jackson. You may begin speculating now as to who QT might turn to for the vacated and likely very coveted spot.

This is a shame if it's true.

KC being cast in this was my favorite bit of news concerning the entire project. Really hope it's not true. Between this news, and Jamie Foxx's inclusion, my interest has been severely dwindled.

Know who'd be perfect as Ace Woody though? Michael Madsen.

I would love to see Mel Gibson take on this role, and the only reason really is I still think the guy is a great actor and could bring the quality of this film up. Besides that all we need is for Jamie Foxx to drop out so Will Smith can step in.

Sorry, no, just no. I'll take Foxx over Smith any day of the week.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all about this flick and am sure it will kick ass. But Costner's casting was the ONLY casting that had me intrigued. The rest? Good ENOUGH but not mind-blowing. My vote to replace him goes to Mr. Tom Hanks.

Maybe he got the script and there were too many N words for his liking, who knows? There are any number of reasons he left this movie. But, who cares? Costner is not exactly known for making the best decisions when it comes to movies.
On a side note, my fingers are still crossed Tarantino will grab Britney for even a small role. It would just be fun. Can't a guy dream?

Too bad. There's something about the Costner/Tarantino combo that just makes sense.
I also think it's unfair that Mr. Costner gets so much hate. Go watch Open Range, a little gem that he directed and acts in masterfully. Or try not getting choked up watching A Perfect World.

Kurt Russell,Val Kilmer,Mel Gibson,Michael Keaton any of those would be So cool. What about Bruce Willis if he can find time with about 12 films due out in the next 2 years,13 if you count Red 2 which on the IMDb list.

Well my excitement for this movie just went down a bit...but only a small bit the rest of the cast more than makes up for it. But damn would it have been cool to see Costner do this. I was literally just telling my bro an hour ago about Costner being in this and he was so pumped. Maybe Costner was afraid of screwing up his good ole' boy image? Damn would he have been great though. I like the suggestions of Kurt Russel, Michael Keaton, or Val Kilmer though. That is if Val Kilmer can actually fit

If people are suggesting Mel Gibson, I might as well throw Charlie Sheen's name into the mix for a comeback. I wonder if he's capable of still giving great performances like he did in Platoon and Wall Street.

How about Keaton or Kilmer to replace Costner? I honestly think it's a dumb move on Cotsner's part if it wasn't a "scheduling conflict" and he just decided to back out. But until we learn otherwise, gonna have to take the news at face value. I do agree with an earlier poster who mentioned Mel Gibson. Wouldn't that be an interesting hire? QT's the only one that would have the balls to bring him in.

One word: Superman

I mean, it's probably a scheduling conflict with Superman, since it got pushed back and everything. Kinda sucks since he's the perfect kind of "comeback" actor that QT is good at choosing for his movies. I'd still like to see Mickey Rourke in a QT film, but I guess they had a bit of a falling-out during pre-production on Grindhouse, so...who knows if that will ever happen.

What an idiot! im willing to bet that the dialogue scared him off! with superman coming out, jon kent could be a good role for him to be a sweet heart again in house holds. But still... to turn down a possible oscar nod in a mother fucking QT film? Costner may have shot him self in the foot! who's he gonna get to take his place? ive read the script, and i think michael madsen would be great in this role, but! I really loved the thought of a fresh face in a QT film.. costner could have been on

I really loved the thought of a fresh face in a QT film.. costner could have been on the fast track to getting great roles again. maybe QT could go holler at madsen, or even tim roth.. but i could also see john goodman in this part, or even if he wants to go younger, why not bring in brad pitt or someone! with all the people that want to work with QT he really could stick any big name in this part! and this is a really really good part! i could probably sit here and toss names around all day! i would like to see someone he's never worked with before, but i do love the tarantino alumni that he loves working with! idk.. who do you guys think could fill the shoes of " Ace Woody"?

Wow. That's interesting. I didn't know that you could leave a QT film. I'm curious how much QT will have to change the role from what it was originally.

Well, I can't say I'm crestfallen, but I was intrigued by this original bit of casting. I'll go ahead and put my vote on Kurt Russell-though the second half of the movie was weak sauce, I loved Stuntman Mike in "Deathproof." So long as Waltz and Sammy L. stay involved, I'm so fucking in.

unless costner is directing some other "secret" script by tarantino, to drop out of acting in this one...he's a fool.

Scheduling conflicts? WTF else does he have to do? This could've been his career revival, like Pulp Fiction was for Travolta!

damn...

I was looking forward to Costner playing the bad guy again.. but at least I would love to think that one of these might get a chance:

Ian McShane
Sean Bean
Michael Shannon

or someone completely right off the bat:

Vincent Cassel

If there's someone who can take them out of the "underrated actor" field is Mr Tarantino

I am disappointed, as Costner is someone I was definitely looking forward to here. But screw it, there's umpteen thousand washed-up actors QT could be potentially considering to fill the spot. So in the end, we may not know what it would be like to see Kevin Costner in a Tarantino movie, but someone will get that chance and make it shine. At least that's my belief.

Mel Gibson would be my dream choice for the role.

But I'd be happy if they go with the more "obvious" choice of Will Patton.

Bad Idea...

This role is tailored for him to make a big splash... not sure what his conflict is, but he really needs to rethink this decision!

Kurt Russell anyone??

DAMN THE DEVIL!

Why Kevin?? If this is true then you sir have officially committed career suicide. Him and Leo are the 2 reasons I'm looking forward to this and Jamie is the only part I have a problem with. Why couldn't he back out.

Well he is in the new Superman

So if it's not that causing the scheduling issue, chances are that project has probably brought him a few more offers that he took before Tarantino.

Never having been a fan of Costner, I can't say I'm bothered by this news. That and with Tarantino's ability to assemble awesome casts, I actually can't wait to see who he fills the role with. Kurt Russell anyone?

Calling bullshit on the "scheduling conflicts"...

C'mon Kevin, you could have owned this role. Your bad-ass comeback. Quentin has revived so many dead careers over the years. Whatever "film" you're making at the same time...drop it!
