Kevin Feige says Avengers sequel will have "big parts" for Hulk and Hawkeye

03.13.2014

Yesterday, our very own JimmyO sat down to chat with Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige to talk about the upcoming sequel CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER and gleaned a few interesting nuggets of info about future Marvel films and characters, especially THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON. Two of the most common gripes about the Marvel Cinematic Universe are that we haven't gotten a proper sequel for The Hulk and that the character of Hawkeye was robbed of a better story in the first THE AVENGERS, as he was under Loki's mind control for more than half the film. Feige addressed those issues, giving a response that may allow fans to breathe a little easier.

So we have CAP 2. We have THOR 2. When are we going to get an INCREDIBLE HULK sequel?

It’s a good question. I would love to do that with Mark Ruffalo. But part of the fun of AGE OF ULTRON was saying, you’ve seen another IRON MAN adventure before, you see another THOR adventure and another CAP adventure, but we haven’t seen the Green Goliath again. So that was important in the characters you haven’t seen – Hulk being one of them and Hawkeye being one of them – ULTRON will make up for it. They have very big parts in AGE OF ULTRON.

It's a difficult task balancing an ensemble, but writer/director Joss Whedon has proven that it's one he's up to and I think we'll see each hero (and villain) get their due in THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON. That said, it seems that the word about the lack of Hulk and Hawkeye has gotten around and this time out we'll likely get a little deeper into the characters beyond "Hulk smash" and mind control.

THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON hits theaters on May 1, 2015.

I'm okay with that. I know Jeremy Renner had expressed it was not cool how his character was in The Avengers. And the Hulk really had some of the coolest moments in that film, despite being to the side for the main plot. The Avengers focused on Iron Man, Cap and Thor's back story (with Loki as the villain).

Hawk Eye

I don't really know if Hawk Eye can carry his own movie. What I would like to see though, is having the Hawk Eye character appear in other Marvel films, much in the same way that Johannson's supporting character is.

I don't think Renner had quite hit the big time when he was cast as Hawkeye...but either way, given that the movies are not a TV series, Marvel would have been better casting a lesser known actor as Clint...and then, could have used him in the Agents of Shield...say instead of Ward...or instead of J. August Richardsí changed story line of him becoming Deathlok. Clint, is after all...only human (though given the number of times he's come back from the dead in the comics or the beatings he would

Pair him up with another hero!

Standalone? Well I would see it, and ell could be a hit.

Team him up with Black Widdow
Depending on the events of Age of Ultron maybe Quicksilver.
Falcon?

Why not pair him up with Gemma Arterton...for the comedy value...only he has the crossbow this time. Honestly, if they're going to pair him with anyone...it should have been Widow...though seems like Cap is her best fit now. Instead, pair him up with Hulk. Clint is given orders to look after him which should make space for some great banter moments,

It's about time

I'd honestly MUCH rather see more Hawkeye and Hulk than Black Widow and I still don't understand why Renner is being shafted by Marvel. They do know that they have an Oscar-nominated rising star who happens to be attached to a character who's popularity is only growing.. right? Fraction's Hawkeye is flying off shelves and you'd think they'd want to capitalize on that by bringing another franchise into the mix.

Hell it makes no sense that he isn't in Cap 2 when you think about it.

Anyone reading Fraction's current run knows this isn't even a question.

I like Renner and think he is a decent actor when he is given something to work with. Avengers didn't really give him anything he could build on except the idea that he had somehow saved Black Widow. However, that's ok because he was a mindless grunt for Loki for a majority of the movie. I agree that Hawkeye needs to be utilized more. I think Tae K is right, he doesn't need a movie of his own, but why not incorporate him into the Agents of Shield show. He could be a recurring character but

rather than a Hawkeye movie...

an Agents of SHIELD movie. starring Hawkeye, Black Widow, Maria Hill, Nick Fury, and the TV Show Cast. maybe some villain is bringing up their individual pasts to attack them, thus we can fit several origin flashbacks on all these characters.

More screen time in Ultron or a solo Hawkeye movie would be great if they changed his name to John Rambo, and got Stallone for the role.

Hawkeye is an awesome character. The people below bashing probably don't care much for him because
1. Archery is becoming over rated
2. He can run out of arrows, and it would kind of feel like a Captain America film.
He does not need his own movie, but he is not a lame character. All the cool variations of arrows and how he utilizes them is pretty bad ass.

I dont dislike the character, just the direction marvel took him in.

Id rather have a proper full on version of character.

I also dont like renner much, very bland wooden actor.

For those hating on Hawkeye...

The film gave him nothing. The current comic run has been fantastic. Hawkeye, Vol. 1: My Life as a Weapon from Fraction/Aja was really a surprise. It actually made me care about the character. If they tapped into that aspect of the character I think it would really boost the opinions of the film version.

With strong script, I'm sure Hawkeye solo movie will work out fine.

More Hulk is good...

...but I couldn't care less about Renner or Hawkeye. Renner is the definition of bland and whether Hawkeye is cool in the comics or whatever, he sucks in the movies. He dresses in dull black and shoots a bow and arrow. I couldn't care less if he's in Age of Ultron or not.

Very excited to read this, especially about Hawkeye. I'm not so mad that his story was somewhat villainous in The Avengers because the majority of the film was about the main four Avengers. So the majority of the story and screentime had to go to Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, and Captain America and even alot of great Captain America scenes were cut. So it's not like everyone had a chance to shine in the film the best that that they could have been. It's just that I'm disappointed that Hawkeye hasn't

It's just that I'm disappointed that Hawkeye hasn't been involved SINCE the Avengers so hearing that he has a bigger role in Age of Ultron is great news. He's one of the cooler characters of the Marvel Universe and of the Avengers so it'll be great to see him be utilized more.

I think the Incredible Hulk aspect was already a given considering how vital he has been in past comics and cartoons dealing with the Avengers.

Extra Tidbit..

Hell yeah, Hawkeye NEEDS his own movie. He's got one of the most interesting backstories of any of the Avengers. I'm glad they're both getting more focus in the next movie. I loved every scene with Ruffalo, He killed it as Banner, and especially his interactions with RDJ. They worked very well together. I'm so excited for the next flick and to see where Joss takes the team.
