Kevin Smith announces Clerks III will be his final film as writer/director

Dec. 7, 2012by: Alex Maidy

Kevin Smith, as a director, has two halves to his career. Any of the films in which he has played Silent Bob I love. Everything is is incredibly hit or miss. I liked ZACK AND MIRI MAKE A PORNO and RED STATE was an interesting exercise, but nothing can compete with Jay and Silent Bob.

Kevin Smith recently announced that his movie HIT SOMEBODY was going to be a television mini-series instead of a theatrical release. He also announced the following on his Twitter feed: So with the HIT SOMEBODY shift, the minute Jeff Anderson signs on, my last cinematic effort as a writer/director will be CLERKS III

Smith has talked about retiring about as often as Steven Soderbergh and Quentin Tarantino, so this is not major news, but this does put a finite stamp on when his career will come to an end. He does say "writer/director" but I doubt he would shift to directing material purely by others. This seems to be the true end to the Kevin Smith filmography.

But, on the bright side, we will be getting another CLERKS movie. I loved CLERKS and CLERKS 2 is a fun follow-up, but felt closer to MALLRATS than CLERKS, in my opinion. It would be nice to have Smith come full circle with his career and end it where he began, at the QuikStop.

Here's to hoping he can get Rosario Dawson to come back!

Instead of always talking about retiring,I just wish he'd get up the nerve to finally do it. It's the same with him talking about (in the past) wanting to direct a superhero movie; shit, or get off the pot. Or to quote his favorite Star Wars quote that he himself has uttered. 'Do or do not. There is no try.'

I'm getting tired about hearing about his non-announcements in the news. Between this and Dan Akroyd's Ghostbusters 3 updates, it's a neck-and-neck tie for who's more full of shit.

Best film: Clerks 2

I adore that movie. Also his last good one. Maybe he has something to say with this one as well.

No better way to go out as a director than showing you haven't grown or improved at all.

First time i read Smith was retiring the first thing i thought was his comeback would be for Clerks 3, this news comes a little sooner than i expected. My 2 fav movies of his are Chasing Amy and Jersey Girl (am i the only person who loves Jersey Girl?)

Yes you are my friend. You are the only person on the planet who loves Jersey Girl and god bless you for that! Like they say it's a dirty job, but somebody's got to do it. And we all commend you for it!

pillow pants...

Good for him. With Comic Book Men and his many other non-film projects, I think he is making some good decisions lately. People love to bash the guy, but he's just a geek like the rest of us - and I can excuse him for all the shortcomings and appreciate him for the funny and ambitious man that he is.
Favorite: Chasing Amy (easily his best script)
Least: Cop Out (yes, I know he didn't write it, but what a trainwreck)

Tidbit: Strike Back is probably my favorite. As for the retirement issue, we'll see. Give it some time, and I imagine Kevin will miss writing/directing. When he gets the itch and a good idea, he'll come back. I find it a little surprising that he's going to end his writing/directing career on a third film. I'd think he would want to shoot for something original or at least a completely separate film, but I suppose going back to where it all began makes sense. I'd love to see something like

When You Said He Has "Two Halves to His Career..."

I thought you were going with the Pre-Pothead vs. Post-Pothead argument. You know, how everything started to dissolve after Zack and Miri? But whatever. Kev Smith has earned enough respect from me to tune into Hit Somebody and chuck a few bucks for another go at the View Askewniverse. Clerks and Clerks II are top efforts from the dude and Clerks III will be no exception. I will be there!

My favorite thing he ever did was the Clerks animated series.

His talents just seemed a perfect fit for an animated show. I still think it would have been the best animated series ever if it hadn't been cancelled way too soon. I mean has there ever been a funnier 22 animated minutes than episode 4 of Clerks?(the one with the trial and my god bear is driving!)
That being said, and bring on the hate and dislikes for this I don't care, I am totally done with the guy. He is certainly talented, but not nearly as talented as he himself thinks he is

He is certainly talented, but not nearly as talented as he himself thinks he is and he's become way too self indulgent in the last decade. Just watch this thing called an Evening with Kevin Smith 2: Evenig Harder(or something like that) it should be illegal for someone to be so in love with himself. I also can't stand the fact that anyone who criticises on of his movies in even the smallest way, is immediately a stupid dick in his opninion. Even more so since he never seems shy to criticise other people's stuff. So Even though I own all his early View Askew films on dvd and will continue to enjoy them for years to come. I am not interested in anything the guy does or says anymore unless he starts becoming a little bit more humble.

yeah, that show was ahead of it's time. If it were released now, tied in with Family Guy and Futurama, it would be a hit

I love that they had a flashback episode of all their best adventures in the second episode

Chasing Amy is my personal favorite and also my pick for his best overall film. Red State is a total piece of cinematic garbage though. What a waste of time that stink bomb was!

For the most part I tend to consider the majority of his movies exercises. Sometimes highly entertaining exercises at that. With that in mind I think Clerks is my favorite. It wasn't the first or second thing I ever saw by him, but it's a fun little indie where there wasn't any real expectation. I also really like Chasing Amy (it fits squarely in the late-'90s quirky comedy sub-genre), and Dogma. Red State was a surprisingly solid and not too jokey entry, though I'd have preferred if the ATF

My least favorite of Smith's movies (that I have seen) is Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. It has it's moments, but part of Smith's charm is the underdog quality of his movies. In particular, I don't think Jay and Silent Bob needed their own movie (though it did let them tie together all the characters from the prior movies). While most of his movies are crude, I don't really find Jay as interesting as Holden or Dante.

I'm all for it, the Viewaskewniverse is why I was even a Smith fan in the first place. Zack & Miri make a porno was the only good non-skewniverse flick (IMHO) so it will be good to see him round this all out with characters I love. I'm hoping there will be more cameos like in Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back and I really want Rosario Dawson brought back into the fold. I also don't see Kevin Smith retiring 100%. The guy loves to write and when he eventually gets tired of podcasting I can see him

Extra Tidbit: My favorite has to be Mallrats, it has the best soundtrack and all of my favorite pop culture references. Not to mention Brodie Bruce, my favorite Kevin Smith character of all time!

Least favorite I'd go Chasing Amy, I think the movie is fine but I actually liked it more when I saw it the first time as a naive kid. As an adult everyone but Allysa seems mad immature and I actually understand and at least relate more to Banky than Holden.

Worst I'd have to say Red State, I just couldn't care about any of the characters; which should never happen in a Kevin Smith flick.

Hmmm, really mixed feelings on this one. Clerks 2 is definitely my favorite Smith movie, and while it would be interesting to see a sequel, it's just not necessary (especially since C2's ending was damn near perfect).

Didn't he mention a while back that Clerks 3 would be a stage production? It still could be, have a good half season on Broadway and then move it to Jersey to film.

And fuck all you haters, I liked Jersey Girl. I REGRET NOTHING.

Clerks is his best film and Clerks 2 is the worst. Red State was quite good I found, and didnt he do the film Vulgar? That was another decent film that if he didnt do starred most of the crew that star in his films. Not sure what happened to Jason Mewes but looks like plastic surgery has really given him a fake look these days, if he had an accident or something then sorry didnt know.

Clerks 2 is the worst

Mall rats would have been passable as a first movie (but it wasn't), but Smith never seemed to progress beyond that point as a film maker. It seems he just has to throw in a few Star Wars or comic book references to keep his fans happy. Clerks 2 has to rank as one of the worst films I have ever seen, it is painfully unfunny.

Jesus

His entire career is a testament to mediocrity. Everything he has ever done has been utterly unexceptional to flat out awful, other than his first film, which he will now have gone back to the well on twice. Given the progressively dwindling returns of his films this is likely the only film he could get financing for anymore. As much as I am unimpressed with his filmography, and what I know of him personally via the media, he has engendered a sense of fatalist loyalty out of a certain sect of
