Kevin Smith announces that Clerks III will be "the best movie I'll ever make"

Mar. 8, 2013by: Paul Shirey

The illustrious and infamous Kevin Smith took to the social media circuits today to share the news that his CLERKS III project will indeed be a film, rather than the previously reported book.  Smith apparently awoke this morning with the desire to put some words on paper and once he got going made the decision that it will not only be a film, but "the best movie I'll ever make."

Here's the official word and cover page of the script from Smith's Facebook page:

A book about CLERKS seemed like a bad idea to begin with.  What is clerks without the voices of Randal Graves (Jeff Anderson) and Dante Hicks (Brian O'Halloran)?  If those guys are speaking lines of those characters than it needs to be heard, not read.  I loved the original CLERKS and really dug CLERKS 2, so this news is all good for me. Smith has been back and forth on what CLERKS III would be, citing at one point that it would be his last film.

The Kevin Smith hater expressway will no doubt flood the below strikebacks and that's expected.  Personally, I think Smith excels when he's in his "hood" and not trying to be a rom-com (JERSEY GIRL), straight comedy (COP OUT), or action thriller (RED STATE) director.  He's best with dick and fart jokes and that's where he makes his best work.  Nothing wrong with that.

We'll see how it all shakes out as Smith continues to tap away at the script for CLERKS III.

Let the haters and fans unleash...

Extra Tidbit: I actually dig the AMC show Comic Book Men. It's a genuinely fun show and at a lean 30 minutes per episode never outstays its welcome.

Hmmmm..

I think the film's premise should be about Randall helping Dante cope with the fact that Rosario Dawson was eaten alive by cannibals. If she's written out of it, I'm game.

If Kevin Smith decides to cram in his opinions on pop culture, I'm out. My biggest problem with Clerks II was the first hour was Kevin Smith on his soapbox talking about how much Star Wars is the greatest thing to ever exist and how "funny" donkey sex is. What made Clerks so great was its realism. Everyone in that movie felt like a real person and were all flawed in very human ways. Clerks II was fantasy land and frankly missed the point of the original. I don't know how to feel about Clerks

A racist? From the sixties? Baha, what? What the hell are you talking about? I called you a boy and I'm suddenly a racist from the 60s.

You seem to be blinded because I wrote a mild insult at you and yet again, have missed my point. You did not say the characters were realistic because you said the same thing for Clerks II that they were two guys. For the first, you said regular so now you're saying that they weren't realistic in the sequel? As for the pop culture references. well, there's a

Boy? What are you a racist from the sixties or something? Sad attempt at, I guess denigration? Anyway, moving on.

I said the characters were realistic too. We literally said the same thing. Reading comprehension low on your side of the country, eh? I just said if you think the original Clerks didn't have ridiculous situations and pop culture references (two things you hit Clerks II for), then you are blind.

I should ask you the same question. What movie were YOU watching? Did I say it was all realistic? NO. The CHARACTERS are. You obviously missed the point and jumped to conclusion. Move along now, boy.

Totally. Clerks had gritty realism like a girl fucking a corpse, a man obsessed with milk, and a swedish metal star.

The movies were always cartoons - it was the heart of the movie that was realistic. Clerks - Two regular guys stuck in dead end jobs. Clerks II - Two guys trying to move on from their shitty jobs.

Clerks had an entire conversation about the Death Star. What movie were you watching?

Ok, I'll try it.

I've enjoyed a few things of Kevin Smith's, not the least of which was the original Clerks. I don't even remember what Clerks II was about, so I guess it wasn't that great. I'll see this, but if he spent 2 hours typing a script I don't think he can so easily promise it'll be his best movie ever. All I'm getting is that he WANTS it to be so...

Wait and see . . .

Kinda wondering how many times Smith can go back to the well with those characters, but who knows? I also agree that Smith loses his way when he leaves his comfort zone: COP OUT was god-awful and don't get me started on RED STATE.
I suspect Smith's creative engine has run out of gas but I'm willing to be wrong about that.

He may be right.

But this saying next to nothing. I'll be glad when he finishes this, and after it's inevitable resounding thud into the marketplace (and Clerks III may actually get a wide release) he will finally go away. My taste doesn't need to be everyone's taste. I'm fine with that. But Smith's hubris and delusion has made me entirely tired of his endless self-promotion. He is a one trick point that thinks he is Secretariat. He can podcast to his devoted followers until the end of time. No problem. Just

Lets not get ahead of ourselves here Kevin

Clerks was the first "indie movie" i ever saw. I really like Kevin Smith, and yes he has some misses, but don't all filmmakers? So i'm excited to see that he's going to make a trilogy out of Clerks. Plus because Smith is a merchandise whore CLERKS BOXSET will one day be apart of my collection, you know someday. Only time will tell if this will be the best movie he makes.

Have to stay neutral on this for now. I love Kevin Smith but dude, make up your mind. One day it's announced as a stage play. The next a movie. Then a novel. Then a movie again. What's next, is it going to be a podcast radio play? Is it going to be a delicious sandwich? Clerks III: The Sandwich.

Red State

I think Red State is one of the best "horror" films i've seen in awhile...I'd take a film like Red State over a remake of Nightmare On Elm Street, or Texas Chainsaw Massacre any day of the week!

Red State has it's own thing very much going for it. A lot more than most original horror films these days as well.

I'd like to see how Clerks 3 works out, after all Smith has learned from previous films.

He was talking about it on Smodcast, and he sounded really excited about his story idea for Clerks III. They just had to track down a lot of the money from Clerks II that sort of disappeared into the ether before Jeff would sign on for it.

Looking forward to it. Kevin's a really down-to-Earth dude when you actually listen to him, and you can tell he puts alot of himself into his work.

Love both Clerks movies. Actually, I enjoy all of his movies. I'm always astounded by the hate he generates, the comments on this article are some of the most positive I've seen on a story about him. I may not always be on board with his antics, or his persona (the weed stuff the last 2 or 3 years... ugh)... but I'm a fan.

He is good on Comic Book Men & was very refreshing on his Talking Dead appearance.

When did Kevin Smith become Jay-Z?

It seems to me that after finishing Clerks 3, Kevin Smith, will re find his passion for making movies. If not immediately then give it a year or two. So enough with the fake posturing. Stop saying your going to retire. Just go back to what you're good at View Askew Universe. All of Quentin Tarantino's movies exist in his strange world and so should his. Invent new younger characters that maybe your daughter can relate to, but set them in that World and have Jay and silent bob age. All
