Kevin Smith finds his hockey goon for Hit Somebody

11.30.2010

It's no secret that Kevin Smith has been hunting for a lead for his hockey comedy HIT SOMEBODY for quite some time now, and was pretty bummed out when Seann William Scott jumped ship for Jay Baruchel's similarly themed movie GOON, but now at least he's found his man. And it's uh, that guy.

He's Nicholas Braun, and a few of you might recognize him from SKY HIGH and the Ten Things I Hate About You series on ABC Family. Here's what Smith had to say about the whole casting process.

At one point it was Seann William Scott, and Seann William Scott apparently wanted to make a hockey movie real fuckin’ bad… So he went to do another one, which meant we were star-less for a while, which was totally OK by me. But then I found so much of my Hit Somebody cast while making Red State, so…

The guy who’s going to play my lead, whose name is Buddy McKraken in the movie, is a fella who’s in our flick [Red State] and his name is Nicholas Braun. He’s this really great actor who I love to death and he is the perfect lead for this hockey movie, for this script, which is based on this Warren Zevon song.

Braun is supposed to be playing Buddy McCracken, "a hockey player who discovers a gift for violence." But as Seann William Scott was relatively jacked, Braun does not appear to have the same muscle mass, and I wonder if he's going to bulk up, or if it's just going to be more of an attitude thing. I guess anyone can look big under all those pads.

Extra Tidbit: I hope my mild critique of his lead doesn't set off one of his famed Kevin vs. the internet Twitter explosions. But I wouldn't be surprised.

If it wasn't for Cop out, we wouldn't be getting Red State. The money he made on that one is how he financed Red State. Yes. Cop Out MADE WB MONEY. Fuck, ALL K.S. movies Make their money back, even the ones that bomb at the Box Office! You giys can hate on him all you want but bottom line is he KNOWS HOW TO MAKE STUDIOS MONEY. When that stops happening, he'll turn into his pal Richard Kelly.

Did I like Cop Out?? Fuck no. Horrible movie. And I will be "one of those guys" who indeed says it

Did I like Cop Out?? Fuck no. Horrible movie. And I will be "one of those guys" who indeed says it wasn't his fault. Someone said it was "horribly acted, horribly directed/edited, and music was out of place".

Really? I didn't see any of that. The music was one of the only good things about the flick and for someone who has NEVER directed action outside of "Jay and Silent Bob run into a brick wall" it was damn good.

What I saw with Cop Out was a fucking horrible script and GOOD ACTORS trying to make the dialogue believable when in fact they couldn't, so it came off as wooden, stale and forced.

This guy for Hit Somebody is 6'6" like someone pointed out. He can bulk up and you all know it. If K.S. says he's perfect then he's perfect.

You guys remember an actor by the name of JASON LEE?? Yeah. K.S Cast him in a BOMB of a fucking movie called Mallrats and made him a star because of his wonderful performance (yes, Jason Lee is awesome in Mallrats and you fucking know it).

Also, Zack and Miri isn't NEARLY as bad as everyone says it is. It was one of the funniest movies out that year and the reviews for it were GOOD! It's rated fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.

Did it make as much money as they THOUGHT it would? No. Not close. But it still MADE A profit.

I used to really like Kevin Smith. Clerks, Dogma, Mallrats and especially Chasing Amy are a lot of fun. Which, now that I look at it, means that he hasn't made a great film since over a decade.

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Jersey Girl, and Clerks II were just mediocre. His last two movies though, ZAMMAP and Cop Out were really bad. Cop Out especially.

I know a lot of people say that Cop Out wasn't his fault because he didn't write it but in my opinion, the writing was only part of

The music always felt out of place, the editing was sloppy, the performances were awful etc. It just a downright horribly put together film.

Now, Dogma and Chasing Amy are downright classics in my book so I'll keep watching his stuff. He seems to have a lot of trouble when he gets any sort of respectable budget so maybe these will be better.

Is this a period piece? There's been no hitting or real toughness in any level of hockey for over a decade now. Every time I try and watch an NHL game now I say the phrase "HIT SOMEBODY" and no one ever does. I was a big fan years ago but the No Hitting League turned me off. Kevin Smith needed to make this thing last century.

Everybody's doubting this because of this actor? Doubt it because it's a Kevin Smith flick.

Eh I'll give him a chance and reserve judgment until I see a trailer, but I'm much more excited for Red State.

Kevin Smith is ripping off characters from the classic hockey movie "Slap Shot". Tim 'Dr. Hook' McCracken is the name of the antagonist in Slap Shot. Let me guess; the next person who's going to be cast will be "Ogie Ogilthorpe II".

Smith is an established director and this was the best he could do for the lead? He would have been better off going with Seth Rogen again for the lead and that would have been a much better decision.

Based off of this Baruchel has the upper hand with Sean William Scott.

Smith needs to face reality

This kid looks like an awful choice to headline any film. He looks weak and bland and I get the sense that this is one of those situations where a director has hit a rough patch and so he does a project that nobody else supports and to psych himself up he tells himself that the nobody he was forced to cast to keep the budget down is the Next Big Thing and that it was a blessing in disguise that his established talent bowed out...I have heard this before and most of the time it proves to be

I have a feeling this time is no different.

Can't wait to hear the kid spouting F-Bombs in between sounding like a prick w/ his philisophical ramblings about pop culture.

I love Kevin Smith, I listen to all of his SMODcast Podcasts... and eagerly anticipate every movie he is involved in... but judging SOLELY by the picture you posted in this story... this kid looks like a dude who should be on an ABC Family show... oh wait, he is!

But Smith has a knack for casting, so hopefully this cat will do good. But to cast the lead of your movie as a no name that has the physical attributes of a run of the mill teeny bopper... that may be a downfall

one physical attribute Braun does have that works for the role is that he is 6'6". But I do think he'll have to bulk up a bit.

Umm...what?

I mean I have actually seen that kid in a movie once, and he seemed like an alright kid, but damn. I was really hoping for Emile Hirsch. Definitely want to see this flick though.

Yay. More Kevin Smith shitfests. As if Cop Out wasn't enough of a hint to quit his dayjob.

Sadly, I think Kevin Smith's

star is all but faded. I'm a huge fan, but Zack and Miri flopped hard, and the decision to direct Cop Out was a terrible one. I saw on imdb they had Emile Hirsch rumored for the lead in this, i dont know who this kid is, but he doesnt look like a good pick.
