Kevin Smith says Batman V Superman will set up future Justice League movies

May. 28, 2014by: Jesse Giroux

In a recent podcast, Ben Affleck's BFF Kevin Smith shared his thoughts on the title BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE, and also made some interesting comments about Warner Bros. and DC's plans for their cinematic universe.

Kevin Smith starts by saying he isn't a fan of the new official title.

It’s a bit of a mouthful. And also, I don’t know why Batman V. Superman. Why not just throw the “s” in there? Or spell it or something like that. Or honestly, every comic book fan on the planet, who is a DC comic book fan, I think we all wanted to see Batman/Superman: World’s Finest.

But Smith also says the title makes sense, and says BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE will be the first of 5 or 6 JUSTICE LEAGUE films that will tell one giant story.

But look, they’re obviously beginning something, and there’s a stretch of these flick, and so this is the beginning of the Justice League, as we all suspected as they were announcing that cast. We were like, ‘This is the beginning of a Justice League movie.’ From what I understand now, it’s no longer like, ‘This is Superman 2.’ They’re not doing these things. They’re doing like, ‘Here’s Man of Steel. Here’s Batman/Superman: Dawn of Justice.’ The next one is not like a sequel to one of the characters. They’re just going to keep building their universe for about five or six movies. But all of them…it’s supposed to tell one massive story, which is all Justice League oriented.

So instead of starting with solo films for their comic book characters like Marvel did with their cinematic universe, it appears Warner Bros. and DC will set things up with BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE before heading into a JUSTICE LEAGUE film, and then they'll move on to solo movies. This doesn't come as a huge surprise, but I am curious as to what the "one massive story" might be. Is it based on a big story arc from the comics, or something brand new?

However we should also remember Kevin Smith isn't part of the production team for BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE, and just because he is pals with Ben Affleck doesn't mean he knows everything that's going on with DC's plans for a cinematic universe. Not saying he's wrong, but we should take his comments with a grain of salt since he isn't actually working with DC or Warner Bros.

BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE will be in theaters on May 6, 2016.

Smith doesn't say anything about solo films.

I'm going to be sure and say batman "VEE" superman when I buy my ticket or talk ab this movie. It is pretty stupid

I THINK I'd like to see Smith direct one of the smaller solo films. I know he doubts he can, and cop out sucked, but I think he could really help. ORRRR he should DEF be the "show runner" for the DCU.

I understand DC not wanting to follow the Marvel formula (despite its obvious success)... but if this is true and from this point we'll only be getting team-ups... all I can think is..

'but I want more solo Batman films'! I love Batman more than any of the other JL members (including Superman) and after Affleck's casting I was quite interested to see how they'd handled post-Nolan batflicks - especially hoping for The Riddler to return as a villain after being snubbed by Nolan in favour of

I was hoping we might see an arc of films where we might get Robin outgrowing the caped crusader and becoming Nightwing. Maybe see Barbara Gordon as both Batgirl and later Oracle.

Alas, it appears for the next decade or two, Bats will just be an ensemble player constantly competing for screen time.

And as a side note... I'm sort of surprised, if they are going in this direction, that Cyborg is entering the mix quite so early. If the first Justice League film ends up including all the big players (Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter, The Flash, Cyborg, Aquaman...) will we care who gets added for future instalments or will it then just be about the villain?

If I had my way - following the track they've started - we've had Man of Steel, we've got Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice... I would've left it at just Bats and Supes. Maybe bringing in Wonder Woman due to the fact her solo attempts seem to be failing a lot (is she DC's version of The Hulk?) but draw the line there. You've got 3 main JL players there. Then roll into the Justice League film add a couple more - Green Lantern and The Flash would be my top choices.

THEN give us some solo films. (yes I want my Batman solo films, but also another Superman film, Green Lantern... maybe give us a character we've not had yet?) then after a few years give us a second Justice League film.

That's just my wish. Everyone has their own opinion on what should happen.

I'd CHANGE A LOT if I had my way, and I've mentioned it all before. It doesn't sound like the studio is making great ideas (but we...or I...don't know exactly what they are doing). They def should start with solo movies and establish (or restablish with Bats) the characters and the universe. With all that said, I'd still rather watch a "Bats Family Universe" than a JL one. They could do both. But I'd love to see the evolution of the 3 Robins - even Damien - and batgirl, Nightwing, all

So in other words, WB realized that team ups are making more money than solo character films, so they now only want to make team up movies. The novelty of a team up doesn't work unless the characters are first established. WB isn't establishing anything, and they are relying entirely on the pre-built in fanbase.

Exactly. And that's what I've been saying. The really odd thing is it's not like the solo movies aren't making a shit ton of $. I'm sure I could figure out or look it up, but I wonder what the profit % is of Marvel's solo films vs the avengers. I know avengers made more, but it cost more. And the studio has...what, like easily 50 plus years of good material. So why the rush? Why move past all those good stories? So maybe a flash/green lantern/WWoman solo movie only makes 50-70 million

Make 1-2 of each character, make that $, establish them, then do the team up where u can make a billion dollars or whatever

Okay, I don't think the tittle really does the article justice...

I think the thing we should be taking away here is that, if Kevin Smith is correct (which i hope he isn't), this new DC Universe is going to be more Justice League oriented than solo film oriented. Obviously a Justice League movie is going to make more money than a Green Lantern movie, just as an Avengers movie will always make more money than a Thor sequel. If Smith is right, it sounds like they're cashing in on the superhero team-up trend, and maybe having adding a new Batman franchise

Lets hope he's wrong.

Who the frak cares what Kevin Smith's input is. This movie unfortunately is doomed and has been from the start. So we don't need big man/friend of the actor playing batman putting in his two cents.

This is exactly what I've been saying since they first started talking about this movie. It doesn't need to be a Man of Steel sequel, it's simply Batman vs Superman, it's its own thing. If they really want to get rolling on a full-on Justice

If they really want to get rolling on a full-on Justice League movie they can't spend years making trilogies for every character. I'd be first in line for a Flash solo film but do we honestly need a full-fledged Aquaman or Cyborg movie? I really don't think so.

Where did Kevin Smith say anything that can remotely be interpreted that they are going to be doing solo movies for these characters. seems rather obvious he is saying the opposite -- that although Man of Steel was a solo movie, that was just the launching pad for the Justice League movies (5 or 6) that will follow and none of these films are individual character sequels.

Makes sense. Still can't wait to see Flash, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, and Aquaman get their own solo films; or at least in Green Lantern's case a sequel with Reynolds.

Kevin Smith, who cares?

Guys like Kevin Smith are the reason others feel justified in bashing directors and the movies they create. Who cares what title you would've given the movie.

Seriously what has ever qualified Kevin Smith to be making statements about this movie? Because he knew Ben Affleck once? I highly doubt Affleck is feeding him news like he's his best friend or something. He should stick to what he is best at, which is inhaling food, and stop exhaling words.

Kevin Smith is a successful and respected filmmaker and comic book writer. That's what makes him qualified. Not like it matters, considering it's just his opinion on the topic.

Kind of like it's my opinion that you're a complete dumb-ass.

He's also probably right about the idea that it's setting up Justice League film or films. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to draw that conclusion.

Not like it matters, the movie is going to be a turd.

Perhaps Batman/Superman haven't earned the mantle of World's Finest in this cinematic universe yet, I'm not ruling out the title in the future, ie: character development

This could go either way

The problem with this movie strategy then would be that none of the characters would get their own screen time for character development. That's one of the largest pitfalls of ensamble movies, is that it's hard to develop characters and give everyone due screen time. If they are introducing characters this way, I have fear.

Thought -

I know some are saying that DC/WB is rushing out a JLA movie too fast etc, Marvel set up the characters first etc. But We already had tons of Batman and Superman movies. Everyone already knows these characters, so you don't need another Batman Begins to introduce him again. MOS got the ball rolling and that's it.
For Marvel - they needed to start with individual movies because Iron Man was not a household name and they needed to start by building characters. Captain America was a household

Yeah, I completely agree. I never wanted DC to do the same thing as Marvel because I think they're in a different place and require a different approach if they're going to be expanding their universe. We don't really need any more origin stories, especially for Batman and Superman. If they want to touch on the orgins of Wonder Woman, Cyborg, the flash, etc. in these new Justice League films, I'm cool with that. However I do think the time for origin stories has kind of passed. They've gottten

They've gottten too formulaic these days and a lot of them turn out to be 2 hour trailers for a better movie/story everyone will have to wait 2 or more years for. So, I say do what you want, DC. Introducing these characters in the ensemble movies might be a decent approach. At the very least it will mix things up a bit.

YES! Basically origin story means: long ass movie where you mostly wait for the hero to show up. I am not saying that Batman Begins, or Man of Steel sucked or anything and I actually enjoyed both, but the kid in me just wanted the plot to be more like Tim Burtons Batman - the origin was a flashback and then we got to the current story. Even Batman Returns - Penguins origin is just a montage of stuff and boom, on to present day!

Anyway, looking forward to this!
