Kevin Smith's next adventure? Talk show host

Jul. 26, 2011by:

At this point, I'm not really surprised with anything Kevin Smith does. The guy speaks his mind and does as he pleases regardless of what anyone might think of him.

So maybe that's why the next credit on his resume will be talk show host.

The Smith camp has been developing a daily, half-hour, syndicated talk show that would blend chatter and comedy. Smith even asked the fans on twitter if they'd like to come be part of the audience for the project.

Vulture got ahold of an e-mail that the show's booking staff has been sending around to audience hopefuls. Here are the details:

"Smith's reps are telling celebs that the tentatively titled Kevin Smith Project will be "a daily 30-minute entertainment talk show for syndication ... The idea is a Regis and Kelly talk show at the opposite end of the day for the opposite kind of audience — the 12-34 demo. Kevin and his co-host will talk water-cooler topics at the top of the show, followed by a celebrity interview and a comedy segment from the field (a la The Daily Show). Each show will feature one celebrity interview." The message also gives a hint as to which studios might be behind the project: "The show is being positioned to air following TMZ, in the 6-8pm time period on the Fox stations in all the major markets." TMZ hails from Warner Bros. Television's Telepictures unit, so that studio could be a likely home for Smith; the Fox stations also could be behind the show via their sister studio, Twentieth Television. (Vulture is in the process of contacting those studios and we'll update you if we find out more specifics, including the identity of the aforementioned co-host: Will it be Scott Mosier, his partner for his online SModcasts? Or a reunion with Jay?)"

Someone had to fill in for Opera, right?

Kevin is seriously starting to turn into Krusty the clown these days. There isn't anything he wont sell, promote, slap his name on, or do to make a quick buck. I used to be a die hard fan who would walk into traffic for this man, but then after a while I started noticing all the price tags. Oh well.

As for this tv show, come on enough is enough already. He is pumping so much at us so fast his shtick is bound to get old very fast. Just slow it down, stop trying to be Ryan Seacrest or

Love the idea but...

...part of Smith's appeal is his honesty straight forward raunch filled stories. How will this fare without the smut if it's going to air on Fox?!

Okay

I love Smith. I love Smodcast. However, over the last year he has fucking raped my ears.

I am almost at about tipping point with him. If he isn't careful he is going to look back, & realise maybe he should have slowed it down a bit. Over Saturation to the extreme man! Chill out!

Ive long since stopped caring about what this man does. After Chasing Amy its been nothing but a steady decline. People have their time in the spotlight, and Kevin's has long since faded.

He's become an insufferable self-parody

I was never his biggest fan (because some of his fans are pretty die-hard), but I have enjoyed some of his films quite a bit. I own the Chasing Amy and Clerks DVDs and thought Dogma was solid. And listening to his stories (like the whole Tim Burton/Superman thing) was fun.

But over time he has become rather insufferable. I think it was after Clerks II. It's like he's just been on this rampage of badness in general. The Seth Rogen movie was a transparent attempt at cashing in on Judd Apatow's

But over time he has become rather insufferable. I think it was after Clerks II. It's like he's just been on this rampage of badness in general. The Seth Rogen movie was a transparent attempt at cashing in on Judd Apatow's brand of comedy (which is something I'm not even a huge fan of to begin with); his kneejerk response to the criticisms of Cop Out was childish and egotistical ("IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, YOU JUST DON'T GET IT!"); and now he's in the mindset of blaming everyone else for his failures, whether it's pinning Cop Out on Bruce Willis being tough to work with or trying to say that his last few movies have flopped because of the distribution process...and let's not forget that huuuge deal he made over getting booted off the plane for beig too fat. It's, like, whatever, man. Then he makes this big-to-do about retiring from filmmaking, and now...this?

Honestly wish he'd go away for a bit, re-evaluate himself and come back strong.

I'm only down if it's on HBO, Showtime, or Starz. Don't want no neutered Kevin Smith. I don't want to hear bleeps either. That sound cuts through my eardrums - how can anybody find it less offensive than actual profanity?

I'll give it a shot.

I've had an above average level of trust in Kevin Smith, maybe this is the outlet he has been looking for after the Askewniverse took a break for a few years.

I miss being such a huge fan of this guy that any news about him made my day. I don't dig the "Smodcast Kevin Smith" at all and have no interest in this show. But I wish him and the rest of the Kevin Smith fans well . The View Askewniverse is solely responsible for high school not 100% sucking. While I miss that, we are living in the future and if the last 10 years have taught me anything it's that the future blows.

No not an elitist. It just politely implies you are not the intended audience so you should find something that is more your style.
