Kevin Smith's next film, Hit Somebody, is no longer a film, but a mini-series

Dec. 5, 2012by: Paul Shirey

Well, it looks like RED STATE writer/director Kevin Smith's long-gestating endeavor, HIT SOMEBODY, just took on another form.  The project, originally meant to be two films, has found a new course with the help of Jay himself, Jason Mewes, who suggested to the cultural icon that he make a mini-series instead.  Now, Smith has revealed that that is the exact venue he is pursuing for the project.

“I started restructuring HIT SOMEBODY thusly,” said Smith during his Jay and Silent Bob Get Old podcast #99. "We’ve now drawn in on the close of this and we have a network who wants to do it” Smith does not specify a network, saying the network would like to announce the project themselves, but continues, saying, “Yes, HIT SOMEBODY is going to happen as a mini-series and it looks like we’ll be going into production next year.”

So, there it is.  In a way, it makes sense.  Smith's brand of raunchy humor could certainly pass the cable test, minus the F-bombs and occasional nudity, but otherwise HIT SOMEBODY could fit right in with a network like AMC, home to his successful Comic Book Men reality show.  If I was a bettin' man, I'd put it on AMC.  The only thing is, and bear with me here, do we really need a hockey mini series?

In all honesty, I thought that the recent Seann William Scott starrer GOON was a lot of fun, but I don't think I could commit to a mini-series.  Smith says that the film takes place over a 30-year span of a fictional character's hockey career that goes from the 1950's to the 1970's, which certainly creates a large amount of material to cover.  During the podcast, Smith recounts a story of how he reached out to uber Producer Jerry Bruckheimer with the script, who told Smith it was the best thing he's ever written. That's got to be a confidence builder, but unfortunately, Bruckheimer wasn't as enthusiastic about how to get it made in the current market.

Smith will have to really sell the relevance of a mini-series over a 90-minute film for HIT SOMEBODY, as it begs the question: Is this about a story worth telling or a case of an artist not knowing when to kill his darlings? We'll see.

More as this develops.

Extra Tidbit: Do you think Smith has got the steam to drive a mini-series home or is this destined to be a bloated train wreck? Speculate, my friends, speculate! But, remember, Jay and Silent Bob are reading your strikebacks and making a list...

I'd watch it

I do think Kevin Smith is past his prime and in the public eye a bit too much. But since this will be his last hoorah before he fades into obscurity and comic books, i'm interested about this project. It seems more his league than "Red State" or "Cop Out" so it could be good.

Idk when it happened but I;m kind of tired of Kevin Smith, i think he should go up on movie trial next.

Plus Goon was a good hockey movie, so i dont see why we need a mini series

Who gives a shit what form it takes? From two part film, to one epic film, to two part film, to crappy mini-series, I won't be seeing it at all. It'll be more self indulgent crapola from Smith.

Anyone who hasn't listened to...and sung to themselves for hours on end...the Warren Zevon song the entire project is based on please refrain from commenting.

Okay. Done properly, a period piece miniseries about a guy desperate to score one, solitary goal in his professional career...yeah, I'm more than down for that. Then again the Lockout continues so I'm desperate.

THANK YOU! I'll bet dollars to donuts none of these wet behind the ears bitches talking shit about Kevin Smith have a.) even heard the Warren Zevon song or listened to Warren Zevon's music and b.) never written a single solitary page of a screenplay in their lives.

I love internet trolls. Wouldn't be the internet without them.

Sure

He will probably film it himself and sell it to the network KevTV for a $1, and then only show it on VHS in his garage to anyone willing to pay $400,000 to watch it. Meanwhile, he will tell anyone who will listen that he is turning down mainstream movie deals left and right, but is retiring because he doesn't have the "passion" for it anymore.

Come on. No one wants to finance his movies anymore because A:) they suck and B:) they make no money. He isn't frat boy Woody Allen, as much as he

Come on. No one wants to finance his movies anymore because A:) they suck and B:) they make no money. He isn't frat boy Woody Allen, as much as he might want to be. Woody Allen's films don't often make a ton of money (sometimes, but not often) but his work is highly respected and the financiers know that his films are cheap to make, and they will likely recoup their costs through sales of Allen's catalog over time. That is why he gets to keep being Woody Allen. Kevin Smith made one funny (if overrated because of its novelty) movie and has gotten a long-running, mediocre film career out of it. No reason to feel sorry for him. Unless you are very commerical or very revered sooner or later the financial realities of the film world will catch up to you. He has badmouthed people and burned bridges at every stop along the way. I'm sure he won't be missed.

I hope AMC doesn't pick this up. As a comic book fan myself, his "comic book" show on AMC is absolutely embarrassing. Mr Smith has done some good work but it appears he's on his last leg. Or... his last hockey jersey.

Kevin Smith has absolutely lost me over the years- Zack and Miri was an abomination- but ya know, I just kinda really like the guy and wish him the best.

I like Kevin. In today's world 'miniseries' can mean so many things, his character based humor could definitely fit into a longer storyline, provided there is focus. If this would be a multiple episode story (not just two) it might play to his strengths and weaknesses because he'd have to attract other directors. I don't know if he's still retiring this week but he could function better as a showrunner than a director.

Works for me, I would assume that this was never meant to be a rauncy comedy, so will work just fine as a mini series, curious to know what that means for some of the cast attached at different points in time. But glad it's finally going into production, because as much as I'm a fan of Kevin Smith just talking, I feel like I've been hearing about this movie for 10 years already. Also, since I'm slow, does this make Red State his final movie?
