Kick-Ass 2's Jeff Wadlow to write and possibly direct X-Men spinoff, X-Force

Jul. 12, 2013by: Paul Shirey

KICK-ASS 2 director Jeff Wadlow is jumping back into the superhero genre without a moment to rest as he has now been hired by Fox to write and potentially direct X-FORCE, a spinoff of X-MEN. Earlier today, X-FORCE creator Rob Liefeld let slip that Fox had been quietly developing the spinoff since March, which prompted the release of the news that Wadlow is steering the ship.

X-FORCE, for those unaware, is a spinoff comic that debuted in the early '90's and was one of the best-selling books on the stands, moving more than 5 million copies of its first issue. The book served as a reboot of sorts for New Mutants, an X-Men spinoff book that introduced such popular contemporary characters as Cable, Deadpool, and Domino. This could bode well for those hoping for the long-gestating DEADPOOL movies, as the studio could test the waters with the character some more, which could in turn inspire that long-awaited greenlight for the Ryan Reynolds passion project. Cable, as well, is a staple character in the X-Universe who could easily take off, as he has in the comics world, getting his own series a number of times.

As a comic-book geek extraordinaire, you can bet your ass I have about ten copies of X-Force #1, not to mention the New Mutants issues that introduced Cable and Deadpool. In it's heyday, X-Force was a great book and has morphed of late into a very dark one, which has a team comprised of X-Men "assassins," much like a black ops offshoot of the band of merry mutants with a constantly shifting roster of members.

With X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST (May 23, 2014) and THE WOLVERINE (July 26, 2013) on the way and now X-FORCE in the pipeline it certainly appears that Fox is lining up a massive X-Men Cinematic Universe as they careen full speed ahead into franchise territory.

More as this develops.

Somebody needs to ask Josh Helman if he's playing Cable in Days of Future Past.

Prefer Cable being introduced slowly.

I liked how he'd show up randomly during events before showing up as a full blown character, added a sense of mystery to him. Knowing Fox, he'll show up, tell everyone who his mammy and pappy are (waaaaaaaaait, isn't Scott dead? They DO have to erase X3, thank god). I dig X-23, prolly a good jump point for future Fox flicks in the absence of Wolverine, but it'd almost be cool to see a much more down to earth and mutant team-up in the absence of X-Men when she had amnesia in NY with the other

Let's start with the team itself first: Cable, X-23, Domino, Warpath and Psylocke.

X-Men: The Last Stand didn't happen

X-Men: The Last Stand didn't happen because the timeline was changed in the seventies. I am not sure if Wolverine even has adamantium anymore. Characters who died or lost their powers in Last Stand could return. Here's a list of characters they could use for an X-Force movie using actors they have already used.

Psylocke: Mei Melanon ... Angel: Ben Foster ... Mystique: Rebecca Romijn ... Callisto: Dania Ramirez
Warpath: Booboo Stewart ... Sunspot: Adan Canto ... Multiple Man: Eric Dane

Psylocke: Mei Melanon ... Angel: Ben Foster ... Mystique: Rebecca Romijn ... Callisto: Dania Ramirez
Warpath: Booboo Stewart ... Sunspot: Adan Canto ... Multiple Man: Eric Dane ... Siren: Shauna Kain
Jubilee: Kea Wong ... Blink: Bingbing Fan ... Bishop: Omar Sy ... Pyro: Aaron Stanford ... Toad: Ray Park

I don't want Cable introduced yet because he is supposed to be from the future and we've just had a time travel story so I think he should be saved for a movie with Apocalypse as the villain.

What would be the plot of X-Force Well, Days of Future Past changed the timeline. Perhaps Xavier and Magneto make peace. Psylocke, Mystique, Callisto, Multiple Man, Pyro and Toad thus become X-Men rather than forming Magneto's Brotherhood. New mutants Warpath, Sunspot, Siren, Cannonball, Boom Boom, Wolfsbane, Moonstar and Jubilee are then a new class of mutants that Xavier entrusts to Magneto. Cannonball, Moonstar, Wolfsbane and Boom Boom are new characters to the X-Men cinematic universe.

Enter Bishop. In this timeline Bishop is a citizen of Genosha. Genosha is the X-men equivalent of apartheid South Africa except it is not black people who are discriminated against but mutants. Bishop tells Xavier and Magneto about the atrocities in Genosha including experiments on mutants. Stryker died in X-Men United but he could still be alive and in Genosha in this timeline. Deadpool played by Ryan Reynolds could be reintroduced nicely this way: Stryker gave him healing powers after having obtained a sample of Wolverine's DNA back in the 70s so now Deadpool is still alive after all these years. Sabretooth [Triple H] and Lady Deathstrike [Kelly Hu] could also be working for Stryker. The fourth and fifth Stryker agents could be Omega Red and Feral. Lady Deathstrike died in X-Men United but she could still be alive in the new timeline. Recall that Stryker was using his son Jason to control her.

The Genoshan storyline could be convoluted with the Mojoworld storyline. Rita Wayword could be a scientist working for Stryker in Genosha rather than for Mojo. To be consistent with the comics, they could have Rita being mind controlled.by Stryker. As in the comics, Arthur "Longshot" Centino would be both the leader of the rebellion in Genosha and a former lover of Rita. Domino and Caliban would be working for him. Arthur's brother, Gaveedra "Shatterstar" Centino would also be mind controlled and working for Stryker. Another mutant that could be on Stryker's side is Angel [Ben Foster] who Stryker has transformed into Archangel. Oh and we could have Rita be the cyborg Spiral too.

Anyway, Xavier does not approve of sending the X-Men to essentially overthrow a foreign government. Xavier suggests that Hank McCoy as a US Senator can try to convince the government if not the United Nations to impose sanctions against Genosha. Magneto disagrees, to put in mildly. Magneto then assembles a team that he will take to Genosha.

Magneto's team has to consist of mutants who are powerful and fast so we may have to trim a bit of fat here. Magneto's team can consist of Wolverine, Bishop, Psylocke, Mystique, Callisto, Pyro, Warpath, Sunspot, Siren and Cannonball with them joining forces with Longshot and Domino when they arrive in Genosha.

Recall that Stryker's force now consists of Deadpool, Sabretooth, Lady Deathstrike, Omega Red, Feral, Shatterstar, Archangel and Spiral. The question becomes how Magneto's X-Force doesn't defeat them within the first half hour. My guess is that Omega Red takes out Wolverine, Deadpool takes out Bishop, Lady Deathstrike takes out Psylocke, Feral takes out Cannonball, Shatterstar takes out Warpath and Sabretooth takes out Mystique leaving Magneto, Callisto and Pyro and having to regroup and join forces with Longshot and Domino and their rebels. Longshot and Domino are more familiar with Genosha and are able to help Magneto, Sunspot, Siren, Callisto and Pyro go back in and rescue the rest of X-Force. An added plot twist could be that Magneto is able to free Archangel from Stryker's control and Archangel joins them in the second assault. Another plot twist could have Stryker already having the other members of X-Force under his control (which is why he doesn't just kill them) by the time the second strike begins but the members of X-Force are all able to overcome the mind control and not fight their friends. One by one all of Stryker's agents free themselves from the mind control and X-Force wins.

The movie ends with the government of Genosha overthrown by Longshot's rebels. Longshot is, however, killed by Spiral and the rebels are left without a leader. Magneto agrees to become the new leader of Genosha and Mystique, Sabretooth, Lady Deathstrike, Omega Red, Feral, Shatterstar, Bishop and Domino become his Acolytes. Wolverine, meanwhile, returns to the X-Men.

The end credit scene consists of Cable coming back in time and warning them about the coming Age of Apocalypse. Cable recruits Archangel, Psylocke, Callisto, Pyro, Sunspot, Siren, Warpath and Cannonball and trains them for the coming war against Apocalypse, thus leaving room for a sequel with that line up.

Oh and in retrospect the full title would be X-Force: X-Tinction Agenda with the sequel being X-Force: Age of Apocalypse. They can also do a Deadpool spinoff.

I don't know why I am getting thumbs down. What I am proposing is a faithful adaption of Uncanny X-Men #270-272, New Mutants (1983) #95-97 and X-Factor (1986) #60-62 plus all the stories leading up to those issues and the issues that followed. I can't imagine what other storyline they could adapt. A couple of years later Marvel published a sequel called the X-Cutioner's Song and that was just utter garbage. (The villain Stryfe poses as Cable and attacks Xavier which causes the X-men to go

We could also do without the whole Externals storyline and the Legacy Virus storyline. God, there were a lot of crappy X-Men storylines from the 90s! If anybody can suggest a better X-Men era to adapt then by all means tell us!

You are shooting over people's heads who didn't read comics. I for one dig your enthusiasm, man. Good post, but something like that would never happen with Fox at the helm...already shat over Dark Phoenix Saga. As much as I love Deadpool (wah wah he is a rip off of Deathstroke), I would prefer seeing a movie from his perspective within the MU so he can break the 4th wall. Doing that in a serious film could potentially derail it. DANCE YOU HOT, SALTY NUTS!

If there is any opportunity to get Deadpool in this, this is that opportunity. It would help greatly in him maybe getting his own feature solo film.

But I like this idea of new spinoff X-Men films.
