Back in March of last year, director Bryan Singer said he wanted Gambit and a young Nightcrawler to appear in X-MEN: APOCALYPSE. Channing Tatum was "unofficially officially" announced to play Gambit in the upcoming X-Men flick a few months later, and yesterday Bryan Singer announced that Kodi Smit-McPhee has been cast as the teleporting mutant. Singer welcomed the DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES and LET ME IN actor to the project in a post on Instagram.

Alan Cumming's Nightcrawler was one of the highlights of X2: X-MEN UNITED, and although it sounded like the filmmakers were at least considering bringing him back for X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, it didn't pan out. We got some teleporting action in X-MEN: FIRST CLASS thanks to Jason Flemyng's Azazel, but his appearance just made me wish Nightcrawler was in the film.

I was actually just telling someone the other day I had my fingers crossed that Nightcrawler will be in X-MEN: APOCALYPSE, and I'm very interested in seeing how Singer will re-introduce the mutant in his new movie. Some people might not be too high on Kodi Smit-McPhee playing the comic book character, but in my opinion he's a very solid young actor, and I'm sure he'll do just fine as Nightcrawler.

X-MEN: APOCALYPSE will be in theaters on May 27, 2016.
