Kristen Stewart and Julia Roberts in talks to star in competing Snow White films

Feb. 3, 2011by: Mike Sampson

Two competing SNOW WHITE reboots took big step forwards yesterday in the race to see who can get to theaters first. The Universal project SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN has snagged TWILIGHT star Kristen Stewart to star as Snow White while Relativity Media's THE BROTHERS GRIMM: SNOW WHITE will have Juila Roberts starring as the Evil Queen.

While Relativity looks like it may have gotten the best of this casting day, Universal still has a leg up as they've already signed deals with Charlize Theron and Viggo Mortensen to star as the Evil Queen and The Huntsman in their film. Roberts is the first actress to sign on to Relativity's film.

According to reports, Stewart was the first choice of Universal and director Rupert Sanders but they had been testing other actresses while Stewart decided whether she was interested in the role for her first post-TWILIGHT project.

As for Relativity, they were chasing Roberts since December trying to convince the choosy actress to sign on for a rare part in a genre film. Meanwhile they've been courting a coterie of younger actresses to star as Snow in their film. Earlier names included Natalie Portman, Scarlett Johansson and Anne Hathaway. But with Portman needing time off for her impending motherhood and Hathaway mostly booked up with THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, that leaves only Johansson as a possible candidate (it's highly possible that they've moved on from her as well).

What should be most interesting is which one of these projects blinks first as it seems unlikely that two studios would spend money on big-budget remakes of a property and release them at similar times. At this point, which seems most interesting to you? Stewart, Theron and Mortensen? Or Julia Roberts and director Tarsem in 3D?

Didn't Disney already do this movie like 70 years ago?

Fuck this! Kristen Stewart is one of, if not the worst actress of the current generation. I'm sick and tired of timeless characters being given an "emo" make over to suit the tired youth of today. This project is garbage.

Lets be honest

I think Kristen Stewart does the one character she has ever played very well: the outsider cute teenage girl who is different but you end up liking her. She is good at that. But the reason I don't like her is simple: no range. Until she plays someone outside her stereotypical mold I can't call myself a fan. Granted its not all her fault. She is only known for that part so that's really all she gets.

Meh . . .

. . . at least Stewart will be REALLY good during the part where Snow is supposed to be experiencing "living death".

The choice of Stewart will both help and hinder their film. Help it by luring Twilight fans and hinder it by alienating Twilight haters.

I have to admit, I actually like Stewart too. I don't think anyone could really do much with those crappy Twilight movies, and she was really good in Adventureland, The Runaways, and Into the Wild and I've heard she was good in Welcome to the Rileys.

I think ideally I'd want the Stewart/Viggo/Theron only with Tarsem directing cause that guy can make some seriously trippy shit.

I was thinking the same thing. And we've never seen Julia Roberts as a villain, well except for one really bad episode of Law and Order.

Both are very blah choices, but...

I'd take Julia Roberts over Stewart any day.

I can do without either actress. One's past her prime, the other is overrated.

I'm more than certain that I wasn't actually the first person to comment on this article. What happened to the one before mine?

He called the writer's grammar and spelling into question, and it was removed (presumably because they are tired of everyone ragging on him for it). At least that's my guess.

Surely the more mature option is to just proofread the damn articles? That way people wouldn't have anything to complain about.

If I had to pick one, then definitely Snow White and The Huntsman. Stewart is a good actress, but I'm not so sure if she was the best choice for Snow White. And also, this movie has Viggo in it and he doesn't waste his time with bad movies.

Does anyone actually find Kristen Stewart attractive? Because I just don't get it. And clearly Tarsem+3D=WIN.

Good point. But Snow White has to have pale skin. She's "the fairest of them all".

So to sum up: Two utterly awful films about exactly the same thing are being made at the same time. One starring Kristen Stewart. Fantastic.
