Kurt Cobain biopic heating up at Universal

02.18.2010

I'm not the world's biggest Nirvana fan in the world but going through high school right during the height of their popularity, it's hard not to feel some connection to their music. I remember in my freshman year talking to a really cute girl on the phone while "Smells Like Teen Spirit" premiered on MTV. But I didn't bum out for weeks and hold a candlelight vigil when Kurt Cobain died either. I'm not really sure how I feel about the Cobain biopic other than I know it makes me feel old.

I thought the project, which David Benioff had been writing back in 2007, was in development hell but now Oren Moverman, a recent Oscar-nominee for THE MESSENGER, has been hired by Universal to write and direct the film. It's looking like he'll keep elements of Benioff's script and just "rework" the existing draft.

Universal purchased the life rights to Cobain and Courtney Love back in 2007 as well as the rights to original Nirvana music to use in the film. My question though would be if bassist Krist Novocelic and Dave Grohl, who aren't exactly on the best of terms with Love, need to sign off on this as well.

Whether or not a Cobain biopic would work depends largely on the success of the actor hired to play the legendary rocker. Is it possible that another Oscar nominee from this year could be in line? This is wild speculation but Jeremy Renner spoke to the New York Times and said he's in talks to star in Peter Berg's BATTLESHIP and another film that he declined to discuss. Could it be this film?

Renner, who's a talented singer and guitarist in his own right, spoke to Interview last summer and said, "I think they're gonna do a movie about Kurt Cobain. So that could be interesting. That would be a real challenge. It would be a lot of fun to explore that. I don't know what else is out there, but that's one that's sort of banging around in Hollywood. So I'd give that a go. "

To paraphrase C+C Music Factory, this is one of those things that make you go HMMMmmm....

Extra Tidbit: All things the same, that "Nirvana: Unplugged" CD is pretty great.

Not Jeremy Renner please, CHARLIE HUNNAM

Charlie Hunnam would be a way better choice in my opinion, the Grunge/alternative rocker lifestyle would fit up his personality and with his experience as an actor, not only that without hardly any changes he is almost the spitting image of Cobain, and growing up in newcastle which can be a rough place I would think he could fit the shoes of a man that grew up in a similiar struggle for success just on different fronts.

I wanna see a happy medium...

The film should focus on Kurt Cobain, but I wanna see a movie that captures the grunge era, that also delves into the lives of other notable contributors like Lane Stanley or Smashing Pumpkins. Show us some different story arcs and some character development. The finale with Kurt is the biggest draw. The mystery as shown by a big budget studio won't bring him back, but it will add insight I'm sure. I just wanna see a movie that honors a generation of musicians who I couldn't appreciate until I

Nirvana NOW IN 3-D

Huge Nirvana fan here and my only wish is that they tell it like it is and get the right actor to portray Cobain.

Renner is not a bad choice but if you watch "Across the Universe" and even in the trailer for "The Crazies", Joe Anderson has a striking resemblance to Cobain. Granted, he'd have to put on an American accent but it shouldn't prove a problem. Am I right??

Dude... they bought the "life rights"? That sounds so pathetically gruesome and apropos for a studio to do, it sickens me.

I agree with Cherry. His brilliance is shown in his music, I personally don't need to see a movie about him.

So that means Dave Grohl will watch dudes play him and his closest friends. I wonder what he thinks of this.

I don't understand...

Kurt Cobain is like Biggie, they were good, but really didn't have enough material to call them the best. At least Biggie went out like a man and didn't put a shotgun in his mouth....I'm just saying...

Fuck this movie being made. Cobain is obnoxiously overrated, and Nirvana wasn't even the best band of that era. If they have Courtney Love kill him at the end I might see it though.

I'm sure his family would appreciate you saying that. Whether you liked the band or not, the massive influence they had on 90s music and youth culture CANNOT be denied.

Blah. That was the most selfish act of neglect to perpetrate on his child and family. This is Cobain's epitaph in short.

Cast Ewan Mcgregor

I'm not down with Renner playing Kurt.I like the actor, but not for this. Ewan Mcgregor played a character named Curt Wild back in 98, and resembled Cobain 100%, right down to the voice. I know it's 10 years later now, but I think he could still pull this off. Anyone else would just be second rate compared to Mcgregor.
Side comment: Comparing Seattle bands of those days is pointless, so who cares if they make a Nirvana pic and not an Alice and Chains pic.

Of course Alice In Chains, whose music was far superior, gets bypassed. They should be focusing on a Layne Staley biopic with Ben Foster being considered to play him.

Alice in Chains did not affect the popular culture as much or change the landscape of popular music as dramatically as Cobain did. Come on dude, there's more than just the music to think about when you make a biopic.

mehh

Never was a big fan of bio pic movies... and I've never understood the popularity of Cobain. Dave Grohl was by far the best part of Nirvana

Oh great another biopic turning this whining, drug addled buffoon in to a Christ-like figure. Even with Jeremy Renner you can't count me out.

Not a huge Nirvana fan and a movie about Cobain doesn't appeal to me too much but I'd be willing to give it a shot with the right crew behind it. DUDE, Hunnam could work. He's not the greatest actor around but he's got enough talent to possible make it work. Renner would be awesome but I don't want to get my hopes up.

Nice. I've been waiting for this biopic for quite some time. I could see Jeremy Renner as Kurt Cobain, but I could also see Charlie Hunnam filling those shoes as well.
