Lana Wachowski on Jupiter Ascending: "It's a science-fiction space opera"

10.30.2013

Films by the Wachowski siblings have divided many movie fans (besides the first MATRIX), and their upcoming film JUPITER ASCENDING will probably also have some fans who love it, and others that outright hate it. I've always been a fan of the two imaginative directors, and JUPITER ASCENDING looks like it could be as polarizing as their previous films.

Lana Wachowski was recently interviewed, and talked a little about her upcoming film. She describes it as a "science-fiction space opera," and says like other films by her and her brother, it will be a mashup of multiple genres.

"It's a science-fiction space opera. It has a lot of things from a lot of genres that we love. It's got a lot of original action, it's got a lot of romance."

Are the Wachowski siblings capable of making "small" movies? Lana thinks they are, but she says for some reason their films always tend to get a little bigger than how they originally imagined it.

"We seem not to be very good at making small things. We keep saying 'Let's go make a small movie.' But then they always end up being enormously complex. We want to somehow always find something that is different or that no one has tried."

Although both of their last films were box office flops (SPEED RACER and CLOUD ATLAS), Lana Wachowski says she's glad that some fans really enjoy those movies, and appreciates their love for her and her brother's films.

"People come up to us and just break into tears talking about ('Cloud Atlas'). Even 'Speed Racer,' we get people that come up and say it was their favorite movie of all time. We've been very lucky that way. We have great fans. ... And we keep trying to keep surprising them."

What can we expect from JUPITER ASCENDING visually? Andy Wachowski wouldn't go into details, but did say the visual effects for the film are "way more complicated" than those in CLOUD ATLAS, and considering some of the shots in that film, I can't even imagine what they'll be doing for JUPITER ASCENDING.

I'm not going to lie, I am incredibly pumped for JUPITER ASCENDING. I've always had a soft spot for original sci-fi (even those that are original, but borrow heavily from other films...*cough* OBLIVION *cough*), and I can't wait to see what the Wachowski siblings have in store for us with their science-fiction space opera.

JUPITER ASCENDING stars Mila Kunis, Channing Tatum, Sean Bean, Eddie Redmayne, James D'Arcy and Tim Pigott-Smith, and will be released on July 25th, 2014.

Extra Tidbit: I'm excited for JUPITER ASCENDING, but I'm worried it's not going to perform that well in theaters, like CLOUD ATLAS. Do you think the Wachowski's new film has better box office potential?

I think if the Wachowski's did something less reliant on special effects or figuring out their complex for no damn good reason plots it would be welcomed with open arms...i'm still pissed about the two Matrix sequels lol

I haven't liked all the Wachowskis' movies

but CLOUD ATLAS went by awful fast for a 3-hour movie and that's a good thing in my book. Looking forward to this, and I hope people keep giving the Wachowskis a career in Hollywood. It's good to have some more cerebral sci-fi in theatres.

It's hard for me to stay positive

Although I think Cloud Atlas is heavily underrated, it did have several flaws. I'm hoping Jupiter Ascending is Wachowki's return to form similar to the original Matrix.

I am so pumpeddd

FOr this movie. I lovedddd cloud atlas so damn much it was such an awesome movie. It actually made you think, and there is so many answers to be found in the movie. Speed racer was just what it was meant to be a colorful fun film. I wish they would bring that movie back to theaters for IMAX that would be an amazing movie to see in IMAX>

:/

I can't say I am excited for this. The movie was ambitious yet totally flawed, and after seeing how bad Cloud Atlas tanked at the box office, I think the general public agrees with me.

Excited for this. We need more good original Sci-if films and the Wachowski's are perfectly capable of delivering us just that.

And I loved Speed Racer. Very underrated, entertaining film.

Speed Racer was like watching the Wachowski siblings race to failure.

I admire the Wachowskis for committing to that heightened style for Speed Racer, but after watching it I felt like I had eaten too much candy.

To be fair with regard to their scale, they did make Bound, a small movie that feels like it could've been a stage play, which I couldn't believe came from the minds of The Matrix until some of their later, weirder movies (and Larry becoming Lana). But I'd also argue, if they can raise the money, why not go big?

I'm looking forward to it. Sometimes, the Wachowskis bite off more than they can chew, but that they're willing to risk the bite is good enough for me.

Loved Cloud Atlas. Any filmmaker that keeps pushing the envelope, whether with or without success, is aces in my book.

That's what's up. A good mainstream flick is sort of the standard and that's okay, but the essence of cinema and the evolution of it is in the hands of filmmakers like the ones you mentioned.
