Lars Von Trier's Nymphomaniac gets U.S. release dates; will be split into two films

Dec. 5, 2013by: Paul Shirey

For those fearing (hoping?) they'd never see Lars Von Trier's sex epic NYMPHOMANIAC on the big screen, you can now rest...uncomfortably. The film has been split into two parts, NYMPHOMANIAC: PART ONE and NYMPHOMANIAC: PART TWO, which will hit U.S. theaters and VOD early next year. PART ONE will debut on VOD March 6, 2014, then bow in theaters on March 21, 2014. PART TWO will hit VOD on April 3, 2014 and then theaters on April 18, 2014. Set your calendars accordingly.

From THR:

Together, the 4 ½ hour cinema event tracks the life story of Joe (Charlotte Gainsbourg), a self-diagnosed nymphomaniac who, badly beaten, is taken in by the older bachelor Seligmann (Stellan Skarsgard). She proceeds to tell him the erotic story of her life. Nymphomaniac: Part One also stars Stacy Martin as the younger Joe, Shia LaBeouf, Christian Slater, Uma Thurman, Sophie Kennedy Clark, Connie Nielsen and Udo Kier.

Nymphomaniac: Part Two,  which traces Joe’s adulthood, co-stars Jamie Bell, Willem Dafoe, Mia Goth and Jean-Marc Barr.

According to producer Louise Vesth, the film(s) will debut theatrically with graphic depictions of sexuality “right up against the censorship limits, maybe just over them," although there is also talk of "blurring" images for some international audiences. A longer, five-and-a-half hour cut is expected to make the festival circuit next year.

The whole thing feels excessive in every aspect. It's hard to justify any movie over two hours, but four-and-a-half hours of porn art is a bit much, even by internet standards. That said, I consider KILL BILL vol. 1 & 2 to be the same movie, so there's that.

Will you be checking out NYMPHOMANIAC (part one, two, or both) out of morbid curiosity, genuine interest, or are you steering clear?

Look beyond the explicit material

If anyone knows Von Trier's films then they should know the content of the film is not the main focus, it's merely a backdrop. I think Lars is indeed trying to push the envelope but to say he's merely doing it because he's trying to cause controversy don't really know much about Trier. I loved Antichrist and Dancer in the Dark, enjoyed Melancholia, and somewhat liked Breaking the Waves, so I'm looking forward to this.

I'm interested in this mainly for the fact I loved Melancholia so much and I want to see Lars' followup to it. The run time doesn't bother me, I'd sit through the 5 hour cut if that's what was released. The premise only sounds ok but I love the fact Lars pulls no punches and pushes the envelope. Very ambitious director. And I really love we'll only have to wait a month between parts as opposed to a year like every other movie. I'll definitely be seeing both parts of this one.

At what point does pushing the envelope just become trying too hard for things no one cares about? I'll be the first to admit that i know little about this film or the story its trying to tell but at face value i find myself wondering if i even care. I mean i know actors want to test themselves and go for that hard to pull off role but i mean come on. I'm even a avid watcher of porn and i have no interest in seeing just how far the envelope gets pushed in this and still attempt to be called

I dunno, maybe i'm putting too much thought or am to ill informed about the project. At the end of the day though i guess thats just Lars Von Trier for ya. To each his own.
