Lars Von Trier's Nymphomaniac gets U.S. release dates; will be split into two films
For those fearing (hoping?) they'd never see Lars Von Trier's sex epic NYMPHOMANIAC on the big screen, you can now rest...uncomfortably. The film has been split into two parts, NYMPHOMANIAC: PART ONE and NYMPHOMANIAC: PART TWO, which will hit U.S. theaters and VOD early next year. PART ONE will debut on VOD March 6, 2014, then bow in theaters on March 21, 2014. PART TWO will hit VOD on April 3, 2014 and then theaters on April 18, 2014. Set your calendars accordingly.
Together, the 4 ½ hour cinema event tracks the life story of Joe (Charlotte Gainsbourg), a self-diagnosed nymphomaniac who, badly beaten, is taken in by the older bachelor Seligmann (Stellan Skarsgard). She proceeds to tell him the erotic story of her life. Nymphomaniac: Part One also stars Stacy Martin as the younger Joe, Shia LaBeouf, Christian Slater, Uma Thurman, Sophie Kennedy Clark, Connie Nielsen and Udo Kier.
Nymphomaniac: Part Two, which traces Joe’s adulthood, co-stars Jamie Bell, Willem Dafoe, Mia Goth and Jean-Marc Barr.
According to producer Louise Vesth, the film(s) will debut theatrically with graphic depictions of sexuality “right up against the censorship limits, maybe just over them," although there is also talk of "blurring" images for some international audiences. A longer, five-and-a-half hour cut is expected to make the festival circuit next year.
The whole thing feels excessive in every aspect. It's hard to justify any movie over two hours, but four-and-a-half hours of porn art is a bit much, even by internet standards. That said, I consider KILL BILL vol. 1 & 2 to be the same movie, so there's that.
Will you be checking out NYMPHOMANIAC (part one, two, or both) out of morbid curiosity, genuine interest, or are you steering clear?
