Lars Von Trier's Nymphomaniac reveals some hints to the film's content involving a duck

05.31.2013

By now, many of you know that Lars Von Trier's NYMPHOMANIAC will feature a celebrity cast performing some explicit sexual content. While body doubles will be used for the, ahem, penetrating performances, the movie is still going to push a lot of buttons with critics and audiences. Von Trier has never shied away from pushing the envelope and doesn't appear to be stopping now.

NYMPHOMANIAC will be released in theaters in the United States courtesy of Magnolia, but it remains to be seen if it will be the unrated or softcore version. In either case, we should eventually see the film on Blu-ray in its full hardcore glory. In the meantime, to build anticipation for the movie, Magnolia has issued a press release providing the titles of the chapters that will segment the film. Take a look below:

In 2011 Lars von Trier decided to refrain from all public statements and interviews. To this date he has kept his word.

But his stories are still being told worldwide and Nymphomaniac will be no exception. Using a structure known from literature Nymphomaniac consists of chapters, encapsulating both VOLUME I and VOLUME II and during the next eight months, starting from June and like domino pieces counting down to the release, small bites of these chapters will be published exclusively by a community of selected newspapers around the world.

Each chapter teaser is defined by a headline, a still and a short narrative that playfully unveils the multilayered universe of Nymphomaniac with which Lars von Trier wants to introduce a new film genre: Digressionism.

[Digress /dɪˈgrɛs, daɪ-/ verb: Depart from the main subject]

In looking over those chapter titles, they seem vague and will hopefully make more sense once we actually see the film, but IndieWire pointed out that Chapter 6 has a very interesting subtitle. While I went ahead and looked up the phrase "The Silent Duck" to confirm my suspicions, if you are unfamiliar with the term and are at work, please do not Google it. We will just say that it involves a fist and you can take that along with the title and draw your own conclusions.

I am intrigued by NYMPHOMANIAC if only because I want to see if Lars Von Trier is able to make a watchable movie aside from the gimmick of hardcore sex scenes. We will likely find out by the end of the year.

I had an avant-garde film class back in the day and we did a section on Lars Von Trier. I remember I had to write an essay on Breaking the Waves. Look, it's indisputable that his work is in no way commercial and contains themes below the surface that are sometimes hard to get to (or perhaps care about, depending on who you are). He goes out of his way to make the viewer feel uncomfortable, in an attempt to get them to FEEL something. I'm not sure I'd personally want to make films that make the

I'm not sure I'd personally want to make films that make the viewer feel like taking a hard shower and/or jumping off a bridge afterwards, but I have no problem with the man doing his thing.

I love the "Psychological Trilogy" that Trier has been making over the last five years. Antichrist was stunning and Melancholia was very, well, depressing. I look forward to this.

"They are gonna screw in this position and that position and we are gonna see full on penetration and one scene is gonna involve a duck!" Ya know, I could care less about that stuff just tell me if the story is gonna be any good and ill be fine.

I might be in the minority here, but I feel Von Trier is just a guy who likes to just do too much to get controversy. Do you really have to have insertion? I just feel he's to into himself.

Absolutely agreed that he does controversial stuff for the sake of controversy. Additionally, he comes off as a complete misogynist, and his movies very rarely have satisfying stories or conclusions... he is repulsive and I really do hate his work and hate him as a person based on what I've seen him say in interviews.

That being said, Antichrist did have some striking imagery, and Melancholia, while I haven't seen it, looks to be quite an interesting ride. But all his other stuff that I've

I think Nicolas Winding Refn isn't too far off from Lars von Trier's directing style, with regards to his use of striking imagery and putting more emphasis on metaphors and motifs than substance in a story sense. But he's also much better at it, too, and he seems to have a good grasp on what it means when a film is a piece of art, whereas Trier just sees it as "controversy."

Satisfying to who? Some movies aren't out to have a "satisfying stories or conclusions". We don't need to like every character in a movie to enjoy a movie. Just because he puts a penis going into a vagina, doesn't make it controversial. If that's controversy, I don't know what is. Go see Dancer in the Dark or Dogville. Even Melancholia was brilliant.
