Strike Back below!

M. Night Shyamalan has made plenty of movies that found a large audience, but THE LAST AIRBENDER seems like his first strictly designed for that purpose. Is that the twist?

Paramount and Nickelodeon are surely hoping it's the first in a franchise -- they plopped it on the prime release date of July 2, 2010. The live-action adaptation of the Miyazaki-influenced animated TV series (which drops the AVATAR name, for obvious Cameron-related reasons) is set in a fantasy world and follows a reluctant young hero who can manipulate the elements using martial arts and CGI.

The new teaser trailer is here, and hints at Shyamalan's use of FX spectacle. No sign of SLUMDOG's Dev Patel, though...

Egotism
MNS' egotism has been demonstrated time and time again, in interviews, commentaries, and actions. He may not have been the one to decide to plaster his name on the title screen, but it fits the personality he's demonstrated in the past. He may not have been the one to decide to plaster his name on the title screen, but it fits the personality he's demonstrated in the past. His smash hit seemed to have gone to his head, and he hasn't realized yet that he's made a string of [link] films since The 6th Sense (which was indeed phenomenal), and that he hasn't actually demonstrated that he has genuine talent to back up his snotty behavior.

As a big fan of the TV show, I really hope that he demonstrates that he's not a one-hit-wonder, and has at least two really good movies to offer.

@ Grand_Marquis: "Because it's DULL, you twit! It'll hurt more!"

Okay, the fact that Bryan Konietzko is helping write the screenplay is a bonus. But the fact that M. Night Shamalamadingdong is co-writing worries me. I lost interest in his stuff after Unbreakable.

Avatar: The Last Airbender was big enough that they don't need his name above the credits. The fact that it's on there is a sign that his ego is still intact. Not good.

Written, Produced, and Directed By . . .
M. Night Shyamalan. Even though the movie is adapted from a TV series, the script is by Shyamalan. However, with the creators of the show serving as executive producers, they should have influence on the final product.

Looks like a nice change of pace for this director...will follow up the previews...but I must say, it looks promising.

Why Are There So Many Haters?
I wish people would consider the facts. M.Night is the director but he has a position to play. It's not as easy as him 'screwing' up the movie single handedly (?), he's not the writer, the writer is Mike DiMartino who is the creator of the series. So, if there is some crazy @$$ twist it's not on M.Night. Also, M.Night's name being included in the title may not be entirely up to him...there are...

Wow!
I've only seen a few episodes of the tv series. At first I was very skeptical of it, because I hate it when americans try to make a show seem like anime but totally fail and the animation doesn't come close. But The Last Airbender was a pleasant surprise and I thought the script/story etc was excellent in the episodes I watched. I mean, I was totally engrossed in what was going on and immediately started to get to know these characters and like them. Maybe one day I will buy the show on DVD!

That being said, from the episodes I've seen, this looks incredibly faithful to the source material, yet has a more mature enough tone to it.

And considering how horribly that Dragonball movie looked from the start (i mean the START, right when we found out who was directing, playing goku, and the first screen shot) this is a great start for this film and I really hope its great because I'm all for it!!

Hopefully this is so good it inspires a faithful reboot of live-action Dragonball Z, and might even inspire DiCaprio to get back on board with AKIRA!

Initially skeptical, I watched this teaser and expected Dragonball Z. Having seen it, I'm now sold. Brilliant. AND the kid is doing actual kung-fu. Bonus points.

I'm not familiar with this show, but the trailer looks good. I wonder if M Night can resist a twist ending. Maybe it turns out the airbender has been dead the entire time.

Damn that looks really good! M. Night may have sucked hard for the last few movies he's done. Real hard. But, let's not forget that he is the man who brought us that giant slab of Pwnage that is Unbreakable.

Really hope he pulls this one off.

Avatar is such an epic show and so far it's proven that M Night pulled off a successful Fire Nation invasion. But can he pull off a giant Koi Fish made out of water, that rises out of a city made of ice, and obliterates the Fire Nation armies...

Or a six legged flying Bison?

We'll see. But i'm stoked. This teaser is brilliant.

What's that title again?
I was a big fan of the TV show, and am really looking forward to the movie, but I couldn't help but notice that M. Night Shamalamadingdong had to go stick his name right in the movie's title logo. Must he be so ego-stroking and pretentious?

If M. Night screws this up, I'm hunting him down and cutting out his heart with a spoon.

avatar is hands down the best american anime. i've been a fan for a while now. i was skeptical with the show at first because american anime's are usually generic as hell. but then i fell in love with it.

this movie looks like it's going to do the show justice, and knowing how big of a fan m night is makes me really confident about this adaption. this teaser is great, i want to...

I, too, first saw this and said that it was shaping up very nicely. the trailer looked good and the kid playing Aang looks just fine, but then i had to remind myself that what really is going to make or break the film is what the other people look like. once they have a trailer that shows the other actors in action, then i can have a good idea of whether or not this might actually be any good.

Somehow could this be the end of Shyamalan's twist series?

As in, gee, I hope this means he's gonna go out and become the director some of us think he should be, and not the gimmicky one he's turned out to be.
