Last night I saw 20-plus minutes of Super 8 and talked to JJ Abrams. Ask me anything!

03.24.2011by:

I don't know what to say. I mean that in both a literal and figurative fashion. Sitting in a New York City theater last night, JJ Abrams introduced about 22-minutes of footage from SUPER 8, which gave me actual goosebumps and had me wondering how I could describe this to our readers. In a literal sense, Abrams (and later representatives from Paramount) pleaded with the audience not to spoil anything about what we saw. I had a big debate in my own mind about what I could talk about from the footage I saw that would give you an idea for the scope and tone of the movie without giving anything away.

Then I had an idea: following Reddit's popular AMA (ask me anything) forums, I'd let you guys lead the way.

Before we get into that, I should first tell you that what the 22-minutes of footage I saw consisted of two scenes from the film. The first, about 14-15 minutes, was an extended look at the only image we've had of SUPER 8 since its very inception: the train crash. Any director can stage a train crash but Abrams and crew were wise to show us about 10 minutes of preceding scenes made up of character work. So when what happens, happens, it's so much more of an impact than just a bunch of train cars exploding off tracks.

The second scene will be more difficult to describe. It is glimpsed briefly in the latest trailer and as JJ describes it, "It takes place in a gas station and it's a scene where the...thing that has gotten off the train crosses paths with some...people."

It's difficult to extrapolate what the final movie will be based off about 20-minutes of footage but based on what we saw, SUPER 8 looks to be everything you've wanted out of this film - an original sci-fi, coming-of-age story from JJ Abrams and Steven Spielberg - and then some. It is both very Spielbergian and very Abramsian (an adjective I actually discussed with Abrams himself).

After the footage, I got the chance to speak to Abrams and, separately, some of the creative team. It was very informal, no recorders or scribbling down quotes, but in typical JJ fashion, he had some very insightful, interesting and funny answers to any questions lobbed his way. (In the background was a legitimate Super 8 projector spooling the trailer on the wall.)

Without further ado, let's try this out! I'll leave the comments open on this article and check back frequently answering any and all questions to the best of my ability and with as little spoilers as possible.

A very brief glimpse of a reflection in a puddle. Couldn't really judge based on that. I asked him what they called the "thing" during production and the only name that was "suitable for print" was "Cooper." He didn't want to elaborate on why, other than that was a secret title they were working under during filming.

He didn't mention whether he was on set but during development and pre-production, he was very much a part, more so than on the films he just exec-produces like TRANSFORMERS. At one point, JJ even put it out there that Spielberg should co-write the film with him but in the end, he just didn't have the time.

I thought I saw a very brief Slusho nod in the gas station but it went by so quickly I couldn't confirm. And, like STAR TREK there is an R2-D2 cameo but I won't say when or where.

Not a question but I just noticed that the whole derailed train idea in Super 8 was inspired by Close Encounters of the Third Kind. It's how the military evacuated several towns. I might be late (since this is joblo) but it's neat nonetheless.

CLOSE ENCOUNTERS does seem to be a be a big influence on the film but JJ was quick to note that Spielberg films weren't the only ones that inspired him. I will say that while the trailer looked very Spielbergian, the footage wasn't as much so. Had a lot of Abrams flourishes included a heavy dose of lens flare.

Hmm...very good question. ;)

Unfortunately I think that's something they'd probably rather us not talk about right now. But the identity of that person will prove to be important as the film progresses.

Space Alien?

Are we being led to believe that the creature is of extra-terrestrial origin? All of the viral stuff points to an aquatic type "thing". Where is the thing from and does it appear to be killing the people it encounters or "taking" them?

That's honestly something we didn't really get a good sense of. The "thing" was never referenced by the characters on screen. But remember, the CLOVERFIELD monster was heavily hinted as being aquatic in nature and that didn't really impact the film much at all. So even if it is, it doesn't seem to play a major factor.

As for extra-terrestrial, JJ confirmed it's on a train coming from Area 51 so I'd guess so...

Character focus

Could you tell if the main focus of the film will be on the kids? Or is Kyle Chandler the main dude, and the group of kids stuff is secondary?

Definitely, definitely on the kids. Chandler's character, the town deputy, is important but the kids and their relationships are the emotional core of the film.

Title?

Did J.J. elaborate on the title? I mean, are the kids going to be documenting this whole thing or what?

Also, were the people who encountered the thing at the gas station killed or abducted?

Thanks, Samps.

Well, as you can see in the trailer (and in the screencap above), the kids are filming their movie as the crash happens. Their camera was rolling and the subsequent footage may be of some interest to people who aren't producers for a movie studio (if you catch my drift).

On the trail...

Looks like I'm asking all the right questions. I'm almost thinking a "monster movie" is not exactly what this is at all.

I'll go one further and say that the title isn't even referring to a camera, but the kids themselves. I smell a red herring. And it's going off.

Eureka!!!

I'm monopolizing this thread, I know, but I think I'm onto something here. I think whatever was on the train has bestowed some kind of "powers" to the kids. They are making stuff float around. And if there is a bad kid in the bunch, he is using his powers to do bad things!

The footage we saw was rough from a VFX point of view and he said he still wants to trim a lot from the crash sequence (he felt it was needlessly going on and on). There was a temp score too.

He mentioned his desire to get back to LA as quickly as possible to resume work editing so I'd guess there's still some significant work to be done.

All the kids are surprisingly very good. Abrams mentioned if a kid came into the audition and grew up in LA or was "too Hollywood" they were immediately nixed.

What's funny is that her character is supposed to be the only one out of the group of kids who can actually act and that's played to comic relief.

You said the creature is "evil". From the trailer, it seems like the kids believe they can do something significant when the main boy says "We've got to find this thing." It gives the impression that the creature might not be so evil, because it it were, it would decimate those kids.

Inversely, if the creature truly is evil, and the kids want to find it, why do they seem to be keeping it a secret from the military? You'd think they would go running to the military, screaming "We caught it on

I guess none of this is really a question. I'm speculating on the apparent contradictions I'm seeing.

You're assuming the "this thing" is related to the creature. I would submit that it's not. As to what I believe it to be, I won't say, but watch the trailer again.

There is also a very good reason they're keeping it secret but, again, that's something I shouldn't give away.

Sorry this is so vague but I think you're chipping away at some of the things that aren't known about the movie yet. But if you watch the trailer, you'll see glimpses of what they might be.

I think that's probably a coincidence. Not sure where "Cooper" came from but I got the impression that the other names they called it, where rather sexual descriptions for how the creature looks, which is why he didn't want to reveal them.

I will say that the headphones and walkman lead to the only bit that gave me pause. There was a little too much nostalgia around the walkman. Someone asks what he's listening to and he says he can listen to music anytime he wants and the other person makes sort of a veiled reference to iPods and modern technology. They need to stay away from winky nostalgia stuff like that.

What city did jj abrams compare earth to?
I read on ugo that he said "maybe we're the (blank) of the universe." Meaning the reason aliens haven't come here is because we're boring, like this city. They refused to actually reveal the city but now I'm curious. My money is on salt lake.
What city did jj abrams compare earth to?

Is this film going to be the quintessential "hype over substance" film we all reference for years to come? Meaning the mystique and mystery are going to be bigger than what we actually see on screen. Hiding behind big names to draw a big opening weekend at the box office???

I don't think so. I mean the only big names are the director and producer. Almost everyone else in the film is a little known or unknown. But the mystery and mystique are pretty cool...
