I think of all the comedy news shows around, I think LAST WEEK WITH JOHN OLIVER might be my favorite. Don't get me wrong, I like what Trevor Noah is doing with the new DAILY SHOW, I love FULL FRONTAL with Samantha Bee, and even mourn the passing of THE NIGHTLY SHOW with Larry Wilmore. However, for some reason, John Oliver is the one I go back to the most. I think it might be the fact that he has a week (instead of a day) to get his show out, which allows for more finesse, and also being on HBO allows him to be more raunchy. Or maybe I just like his British accent.
In any case, there's a new season LAST WEEK TONIGHT WITH JOHN OLIVER on the way, and HBO has just released a hilarious promo for it. Let's take a look:
Yes, that is indeed Kumail Nanjiani from SILICON VALLEY guest-starring in the promo. Obviously Oliver is playing befuddled, but seeing this makes me want to see them both go about roasting each other for real. Either way, it was a nice twist on these kinds of things.
Now, I don't want to get political (that's a lie, I'd love to get political, but my boss told me to cut it out), so I'll just say this: in a time where there's a lot of unease and upheaval felt by a large portion of people in the world, something like LAST WEEK TONIGHT WITH JOHN OLIVER can be a nice reprieve from it all. Sometimes laughing at the awfulness and fear of a chaotic world is the only way to cope, and John Oliver – at the moment – is one of the best, most reliable conduits for that. I for one, can't wait for more! Also looking forward to SILICON VALLEY as well.
Anyway, the season premiere of LAST WEEK TONIGHT WITH JOHN OLIVER will air on HBO February 12th, 2017 at 11 pm.
