Lawrence Without Us

Apr. 2, 2009by:

Francis Lawrence (I AM LEGEND) will make a feature adaptation of the book The World Without Us. In a hypothetical situation where the entire human race disappeared, the book explored how buildings would deteriorate, how long and which man-made objects would linger and last, the environmental impact nuclear waste and other pollutants would have left unchecked and how nature would consume the man-made environment.

However, the film won't be a documentary, but rather writer Mark Protosevich will attempt to show an event that would lead to our disappearance. I'll be honest, that quote came from the article and I'm not sure what the implications are. Isn't this book about what happens after we're gone? But we're gonna... oh whatever...

Anyway, with I AM LEGEND, Lawrence showed he is good at this stuff so long as he doesn't have to do vampire monster things. Also, endings.
Extra Tidbit: I actually read this book -- yipee! I'm smart! And relevant!

1--I LOVED 'I Am Legend.' Vampire monsters and ending especially included.
2--I love that this movie is conceivably going to be made, with the intent of smacking people upside their empty heads to get them to acknowledge what we've been doing to our planet, and perhaps appreciate it enough to make a change while we still can.
3--So why did I pick "neutral?" There had better be a good storyline to draw people in, and not preach down to them. Most of the space monkeys of the world (i.e. US

Awesome idea...the visuals of I Am Legend were extremely underrated.

Koyaanisqatsi the epilogue?

A film about the book itself? Fascinating.

A film about the events leading up to the book? Boring and derivative.

Of course, the American movie-goer has neither the patience nor the taste for something along the lines of "Koyanisqaatsi" or "Baraka." They want to see people (or animals) talking. Barring that, they want to see some shit blow up.

Ummm....

I'm not up for this because there was an amazing 2-hour documentary from Discovery Channel that was about the exact same thing. It talks about our nuclear power plants, vegetation and restoration of the oceans over thousands of years. Just stick with that.
