Legend of Conan producer says the film will be Schwarzenegger's Unforgiven

01.30.2014

THE LEGEND OF CONAN will mark the return of Arnold Schwarzenegger to his barbaric role for the first time in three decades and has fans very excited. After Jason Momoa's failed reboot of the character, it seemed like we may never see Conan on the big screen again. While some are saying that Arnold is too old to play an effective warrior, his age is being factored into the story.

Producer Chris Morgan was interviewed by IGN and likened THE LEGEND OF CONAN to UNFORGIVEN, the Best Picture winning western starring an aged Clint Eastwood. UNFORGIVEN is widely considered one of the best western films of all time and showed that Eastwood could still kick ass even in his golden years.

With the screenplay still in progress, Morgan explained their goal with THE LEGEND OF CONAN.

I don't want to give away plot, but Conan's Conan to me. Look, for my money, I don't think that the right way. I'm not interested in passing on the torch. It's Conan! It's Arnold Schwarzenegger. We're bringing him back for a reason. When I say Unforgiven, I mean it's a guy who has to come back, and I want him to play his age. I want him to be looking at the later years of his life and have to contemplate this horrific threat. Sitting down and walking through the story with [Schwarzenegger], he's amazing. It's one of the projects that I am incredibly excited about, because I know when you hear Conan and you hear certain things, like the instinct is "There was just a Conan movie and we know those Conan things" -- this is different, I'm telling you. I wouldn't do it if it wasn't perfectly fitting and built off that first movie and if it wasn't awesome, and it's awesome. It's a great character journey. People think it's just going to swords and hacking and effects. It is not. It is a character story. It's awesome.

While they have not sought any directors, Paul Verhoeven has expressed interest in directing THE LEGEND OF CONAN. Hopefully we get someone of that caliber who can deliver a proper sequel to CONAN THE BARBARIAN. I say BARBARIAN because from some indicators, THE LEGEND OF CONAN will be direct sequel to that 1982 movie and not CONAN THE DESTROYER or the 2011 reboot. Morgan had this to say about the reboot.

Look, I think Jason is a really good actor. I love him, especially in Game of Thrones -- holy s***, he's great! But it is what it is. That's the version they set out and did. The version that I am really interested in, the one that I went to Arnold with, and went to the studio with is, it's a different version, and it really is a take on...Conan the Barbarian, people can say what they want about it, I think it's actually a brilliant movie. I think the lack of dialogue in it...I think [John] Milius did such a good job with it, such a good job. There's a lesson about what it is to be a man and a warrior and "What is civilization in barbarism?" and "What do you believe in?" and lessons of life. I think there's so much in that movie that we are now going to be able to jump ahead and build on that foundation that they built, those types of lessons. I think it's going to be something really special and iconic and different than people expect.

With Arnold Schwarzenegger's post-gubernatorial films not doing very well at the box office, some would think that would fare poorly for this and the TERMINATOR reboot. But, it sounds like if any projects are moving forward regardless of box office results for his other films, it is these two. Hopefully we get to see THE LEGEND OF CONAN sooner rather than later.

Arnie's really had it rough since his time as governor.
I'm a huge fan and hope the new Conan movie is as good as they say it's going to be. I say get Paul Verhoeven or John Milius to direct. *crosses fingers for Verhoeven*

As for the Jason Momoa version of Conan..............he atleast looked the part. That's the only good thing I can say about that movie.

I just watched Conan the Barbarian on one of the movie channels this morning, takes me back to being a kid and watching it with my dad. I'll def see this when it gets made. What the hell ever happened to the animated Conan Red Nails with James Marsden and Ron Pearlman?

That clip reminds me...

...just how badass Max Von Sydow is. That tidbit aside, I am all for an Ahhnuld sequel. Anybody who thinks he's too old for the part must not remember the end of Conan (the Barbarian...not that lame Destroyer sequel) where he is depicted as an old King sitting upon a throne. This will be "another story."

It is what it is. What does that mean exactly?

Wow.
Producers really do use that terrible way of speaking.

"Look, I think Jason is a really good actor. I love him, especially in Game of Thrones -- holy s***, he's great! But it is what it is."

Ugh...just shut up! Say you don't need him in this movie. That's all you need to say.

Loved The Last Stand, and am still kicking myself for missing The Escape Plan in theaters (not my fault, it disappeared after like two weeks!). I'm actually more excited for this than for a new Terminator movie, only because this has so much awesome potential and Terminator really should have stopped after two--though I was entertained by the third.

Arnold's recent movies may not be box-office draws of years' past but they are damn entertaining. Contrary to someone who sleepwalks in his roles (ahem, Willis), Arnold gives it his all, no matter what. Bring on Sabotage, Terminator, and Conan, baby!

it wasn't jason momoa's fault the remaked sucked big time. he looked cool as conan. although low on action, the first film was dripping with barbaric atmosphere, as if the filmmakers actually went back in time. the remake felt like a standard direct to dvd movie. all action but nothing interesting. and this is one time morgan freeman's voice didn't help. it's a barbaric world for christsakes. get an actor with a badass barbaric voice. now if they make a perfect balance between action, story

I'd really like to see this. They need a director with vision, and Verhoveon is a good choice. I just wish Basil Poledouris was still around. His awesome score for the first Conan film is a BIG part of what makes that movie so enjoyable. Hopefully another composer could deliver something of equal quality.

Basil Poledouris' score is a big reason the first film works so well. Arnie was still relatively new to acting and he didn't have many lines. I say bring back a modified Poledouris score. It's like the John Williams' score for Superman. It's F'ing iconic!!!!!!!

Chris Morgan has me excited for this. If he can take a franchise from a crap fest like 2 Fast 2 Furious and turn it in to one of the most successful action series of all time (he's written every entry since), then I have faith he can help deliver an awesome new Conan movie...and if Verhoeven really is interested, they need to hop on that real fast and make it happen!

I wish Paul Verhoeven made more films. Hey JoBlo, why not do a versus column between Verhoeven and John McTiernan?

I am so stoked for this. I always wished Arnold would do a third film as King Conan but doubted it would happen. With the remake a few years ago, I thought it was the nail in the coffin as far as potential for Arnold's return to the franchise goes. I'm glad this is in the hands of someone so passionate about the character and story. That means we should get substance and heart instead of a hollow showcase of mere aesthetically stimulating visuals.

The book was fantastic

Conan feels his age and opts for one final adventure, leaving his son (the rock...cough...the rock) in his place as king. He ends up in the New World, eats some corn, and has a very pulpy Lovecraftian adventure leaving his ultimate fate of dying a grand death unknown to the reader. I support Paul...get someone that WANTS to do it (and since Hollywood is dying to bang all his movies to death with shite reboots I further support him as a the man behind the camera)

Somehow, I'm expecting less Unforgiven and more Jack and Jill in terms of watchability.

He Hasn't Been The Lead In Any Big Budget Films Yet...

Arnold's recent box office is not a good sample to judge if Arnold can still bring in the box office numbers, the one movie he was the lead in was not a big budget blockbuster, it was more like a B action film that still manages to get to the theater because someone like Ah-nuld is the lead. Also, this is the age of Rotten Tomatoes and the like, where reviews matter for action films and other genres, there are obviously exceptions to this, plenty of them, but I am not sure Avengers would have

With today's over saturated market of action films, you need to be the cream of the crop to really kill it the way an Arnold blockbuster used to.
