Brilliance

Ready for some mutant action not related to X-Men?

Deadline is reporting that Legendary Pictures has picked up the rights to the novel "Brilliance" by Marcus Sakey. Sakey has also written other books such as "The Blade Itself" and "Good People." Joe Roth and Palak Patel (OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL) from Roth Films are on board to produce the film.

The book:

Focuses on an alternate present-day scenario where 1% of children are born savants with special powers. Called “brilliants,” they are capable of exceptional things. A federal agent, who uses his skills to become a master hunter of terrorists, pursues a savant terrorist who intends to provoke civil war.

The book hasn't been published yet but is set to hit shelves in July. People have made comparisons to X-Men (which is warranted) but it also sounds like it's in the same class as the films PUSHER and WANTED as well. Still, I think the movie (and the book) will be different enough to have their own identities. Of course when it comes to the film a lot is going to depend on who is cast in the movie and who ends in the director's chair.

With how well OZ performed this weekend it'll be interesting to see how quickly this moves into production with Roth and Patel producing the flick.

Extra Tidbit: What science fiction novel that hasn't been brought to the big screen would you like to see made? Don't just list a bunch of titles; tell me WHY the book deserves to be a film.

This sounds interesting! I think I may pick up the book this summer. As for a movie adaption, I'll say Brave New World. For those of you who haven't read it, its about a Utopia, (really, its a Dystopia) where the citizens have sex and take drugs all day long and they live the dream, but on the other side of this place is a group of second-class citizens who view nature as the important thing to the human race. A movie could reflect our dependance on technology and material things, and how we

Extra Tidbit

This is going to kill me for the rest of the day because I can't remember the title nor the author of this book. I read it a few years ago and thought it was a great read and IMO it feels like a story meant for the big screen. the premise is in the future, prisons are filled with too many murderers, rapists, and psycopaths. So for minor felonies the convicted are sent to be public servants. They are given a headband which demobilizes them, basically turning them into zombies or automatons.

This one lady is caught and convicted of a B&E and sent to work as a public servant, however a detective is positive that she is responsible for a string of murders and simply did not catch her in enough time. Sure enough, she escapes and goes on a killing spree, the detective is sent to track her down. The story is very similar in tone to Blade Runner, however the scenery is described as being much "lighter" in the sense that everyone lives a peaceful existence. It comes off as a cross between Blade Runner in terms of characters, and Demolition Man in terms of scenery. In my mind I envision this movie being great on the big-screen. Just wish I could remember the damn title!

Sounds like a good book. Would make for a great movie too. It kind of sucks that when writers use the idea of humans evolving into something more (i.e. developing powers) it's automatically related to X-Men. I get that X-Men did it first, but it tells a very specific story of people evolving beyond our human existence and being persecuted by humans out of fear of becoming extinct. I think there's still room out there for stories to be told about evolution and powers that are unlike X-Men,
