Legendary Pictures sets Steven S. DeKnight to direct Pacific Rim 2

02.23.2016

Despite frequent indications to the contrary, Guillermo del Toro promised us again and again that the sequel to PACIFIC RIM was very much alive and had not been shelved. Turns out that he was right all along as Deadline reported a somewhat surprising turn of events today which seem to suggest that the project is very much alive but that Guillermo del Toro won't be around to helm the picture.

The outlet reports that Legendary Pictures has set Steven S. DeKnight to direct the PACIFIC RIM sequel. DeKnight is probably most well known as the creator of the Spartacus series on Starz, but he's also worked on Smallville, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Dollhouse, and served as show-runner on the first season of Netflix's Daredevil series. Guillermo del Toro will still be very much involved in the upcoming sequel and he took to Twitter to express his enthusiasm for the resurrection of PACIFIC RIM.

While it's a little disappointing that del Toro won't be taking the helm of the sequel, it's exciting that we can finally look forward to another cinematic Jaeger vs. Kaiju showdown. The PACIFIC RIM sequel was previously slated for a August 4, 2017 release but was then pulled by Universal who replaced it with PITCH PERFECT 3.

Are you happy that PACIFIC RIM 2 is back on the table, even without Guillermo del Toro?

Well, I hope the second one has more humor in it. One of the main reason why the first one didn't work quite well is because it was excessively bleak. It was Starship Troopers without the irony. The two scientist guys were more obnoxious than funny and everyone else play their roles too straight and stoic, nobody really cares whether they live or die.

Stop trying to make "fetch" happen

I'd rather spend my money on Pitch Perfect 3.

The first film isn't good enough to warrant a sequel, let alone a franchise. More wooden acting by Charlie Hunam and dialogue taken straight from a power rangers episode, oh boy!

Doesn't need a sequel

I couldn't tell what the shit was going on with all the rain all the time. The concept was better than the actual movie to me if that makes sense. Can he just peg down a project and make it happen?

This is what annoys me about Del Toro

The man tackles too many projects at one time. He said he wanted to do Pacfic Rim 2, At the Mountains of Madness, Hellboy 3, Justice League Dark, and a dozen other films in development hell. Hopefully this means he'll focus on Justice League Dark instead.

I doubt Justice League Dark will happen for a long time considering the normal Justice League movie is about to start production with Zac Synder directing.

Del Toro is a master film-maker. However, Steven S. DeKnight does have solid credentials for a sci-fi picture. Let us look forward to being entertained and amazed again.

GDT was the only reason why I loved Pac Rim. It was his enthusiasm and passion for the material that made the movie fascinating. Not sure how to react to this. I hope Legendary doesn't fuck this up like 300: Rise of an Empire.

Listen from 3:14. Or listen to the whole thing, it's all funny.

It's a win-win. Fans of the first get a sequel, and it opens del Toro up for other projects. As much as I would love Hellboy 3, I've come to terms with the fact that it may never get made. What I'd really love to see is GdT finally tackle At The Mountains of Madness in R-rated glory.

Well since Del Toro's schedule just opened up, how about getting started on Hellboy 3. I'd be more interested in that instead of Pacific Rim 2 anyway.

Oh Thank You!

There is no film in probably the last decade I have wanted a sequel to more than this (outside of obvious franchises were a sequel was obvious from the beginning). A little disappointed Del Toro is not doing it himself but as long as it means another one . Hell, even If it's not good I I just want to see this fascinating world get expanded on.

I'll believe it when they start shooting. So far, this will they/won't they back and forth of the film getting a sequel hasn't made me confident at all when they talk about it. The studio seems to have no faith in a sequel and appears too scared to fail like the first one essentially did, if not for China saving it. Mind you, I loved the first movie, but I just don't see the studio putting their faith in it.

I think it will benefit from Del Toro's absence....

He's a fine director, but he made so many mistakes with the last one (including never explaining why we needed to build giant robots instead of just making more planes with large weapons that can fly faster than the speed of sound to get to wherever the monsters are), that it's good to see someone else bring a different perspective. Not sure what story they can tell with a sequel, but the first was loads of fun so I'm on board.

Let's just try putting an actual story in this one to go

Absolutely loved the first one and am disappointed that he will not be back to helm and expand on the world and monsters that he helped create in the first place. But I do trust DeKnight and if it means that we'll actually get a sequel than nothing at all, then I'm all for it.

And side note; I'm surprised we haven't heard any news about Dredd 2 possibly happening again since all of the Deadpool success.

I thought the first film was alright but it didn't have me wanting a sequel. Less rain and some day time shots please. Also a good story.

Pacific Rim was like watching your 4-year-old nephew play with his toys in the living room. As much as i enjoyed the first one for what it was, i hope the sequel is a little smarter
