Legendary Pictures to tell a dragon-themed tale with Slayer

Brian Helgeland has been in the screenwriting business for a while, having written some great movies (L.A. CONFIDENTIAL, A KNIGHT’S TALE, MAN ON FIRE) and some not so great movies (THE ORDER, ROBIN HOOD).  And now his son Martin has entered the writing game, with a spec script called SLAYER that has been picked up by Legendary Pictures.  In a curious case of art reflecting life (i.e. the son taking up the father’s mantle), SLAYER “is described as a modern-day story about a young doctor whose estranged father dies and he finds out the old man was a dragon and creature slayer. The doctor must become a slayer too.”

Helgeland the Younger is actually still in college as of this writing, so it’s a pretty lucky break for him to have this opportunity (possible nepotism notwithstanding).  Modern day dragon hunting is underrated, I say – so long as the movie doesn’t cram itself full of too many creatures (hello VAN HELSING) and sticks mainly with the dragon aspect, then we could have a solid modern fantasy flick coming our way.
