Legendary wants to make a Hot Wheels action movie. Yes, THOSE Hot Wheels.

Jun. 17, 2011by: George Merchan

Build a brand around a concept? Or build a concept around a brand? The former has always proven harder in Hollywood because it requires a good idea to begin with, and then proper execution of that idea. But a ready-made brand? It's like a microwave dinner. Pre-packaged and ready to go, with sides of name-recognition and nostalgia, and a main dish that looks like a steak... but is actually poop.

Enter HOT WHEELS, another in a long line of potential films based on toy, game, or novelty brands that hope to capitalize on name-recognition and nostalgia to take your hard-earned monies. And if you think something like this is innocuous bullshit meant for kids (as if that were an excuse for creatively bankrupt ideas), think again:

"The potential pic is not targeted at the kids who buy Hot Wheels. Instead, the plan is to produce an edgier pic along the lines of Universal's box office success 'Fast Five.'"

...

Go f*ck yourself, Hollywood.

Well, Hollywood wants to make money, and all those great, unique screenplays may bring Oscars, but few make bank. So, Hollywood makes movies tied into products, which can then sell in connection to the film. Of course, this is nothing you don't already know.

I guess what I don't truly get is what happened from the early 2000's till now. It seems like right up to that point we still had some original work that was making bank so like what happened? Did the 90s not bring us blockbusters like ID4, MIB, Bad Boys, Con Air, Terminator, Alien, etc.? Those were successful right?

I can just imagine it now... in the theater... seeing a trailer for a really generic action movie with lots of car chases... and then the title comes on screen... HOT WHEELS... and then the uproarious laughter.

I can't remember who wrote the article, but I remember one of the JoBlo staffers asking the question a while back: "Seriously, is Hollywood just pointing at shit and saying LET'S MAKE A MOVIE OUT OF THAT!"

I think this proves that yes. Yes, they are.

I will only see this movie IF it's in 3D. And IF it's IMAX 3D. And only IF they have those crazy roads cut in half for cars to jump and that those crazy loops for cars to do 360s.

YES! Thank God! Finally, my dreams of seeing Hot Wheels brought to the big screen will be achieved!

Oh wait, that's utterly stupid. Never mind, then. Fuck this idea.

wasnt McG supossed to direct a version a few years back anyways but it fell through, anyway this is proof hollywood is running out of ideas, plus we already have Pixars Cars movies & the Fast & furious series, what would the point of this be.

Battle Force Five?

A Hotwheels movie? If it was a movie version of the Battle Force Five Cartoon, I could see that...but just a blanket Hot Wheels branded movie is pretty dumb!

It's not for us

It'll be Fast and Furious for kids. Key word "Kids". Why not? Hey maybe they'll have the Red Baron!
