Len Wiseman leaves The Mummy reboot

Jul. 31, 2013by: Niki Stephens

Any of you looking forward to THE MUMMY reboot?

If you were looking forward to Len Wisemen directing it then you can kiss that pairing good-bye. Wiseman has dropped out of the reboot due to scheduling issues. Producers Sean Daniels, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are said to be looking for a replacement and fast.

Jon Spaihts (PROMETHEUS) wrote the script which not only plans to "reinvent" the series but give the audiences a darker version of the character who will have a human personality. Don't worry, he still said to be the monster everyone loves but might have better motivation. The Mummy will not be just walking around aimlessly instead he will be "cunning and calculating".

Kurtzman said back in September that the film drew inspiration from Michael Crichtons novels and how they "ground fantastical sales in modern day science." When they had chosen Wiseman they thought that he was the person that could take on the vision since he has moved the vampire genre forward with UNDERWORLD.

Who should they get to direct? Or should they just forget about this one?

I heartily approve of Wiseman no longer "moving the Mummy genre forward" with an eternal war between mummies and zombies or whatever stupid fucking shit he would no doubt come up with.

I think there's potential for a good Mummy film, and John Spaiht's involvement (in addition to Wiseman's departure) does inspire confidence. Spaith's made waves for "Passengers" and everyone seems to agree that his first draft of Prometheus, "Alien: Engineers", was better than what we ended up with (Ridley Scott wanted less explicit connections to Alien and handed it to Damon Lindelof to rewrite).

Somewhat encouraging, but still not on board with the script. I'm getting sick and tired of Hollywood's tendency to "humanize" villains and monsters. Hell, Imhotep from The Mummy (1999) was already pretty humanized, with his tragic love story and shit.

the studio should move on as well

these movies were crappy - apologies to those of you who were tweens when they came out. I was in college, and recognized them for what they were - watered-down derivatives of Indiana Jones movies. Universal needs to take their monster properties in a different direction.

Good

I've never cared for his "style" of directing and saying he moved the vampire genre forward is a laugh since Underworld pretty much help stick a nail in that coffin( yes bad pun intended).
As far as a director to take over goes I dunno how about Vincenzo Natali(and I only say that because I'm watching Splice right now)

moved the vampire genre forward with UNDERWORLD.

Ahahah.

I'm pretty sure Underworld just ripped off Blade and The Matrix.....badly.

Let's get a visceral atmospheric HORROR film director on this, tone the CGI right down, and re-claim some credit to those Universal Monsters.

I guess that means Kate Beckinsdale isn't going to be in it either.

Glad he dropped out. I want my mummy to be downright scary and less action.
