Leo, Marty together again

Oct. 23, 2007by: Mike Sampson

After three films, Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese are getting ready to reteam on SHUTTER ISLAND. The film is based on the Dennis Lehane novel of the same name and would star DiCaprio as a 1950s US marshal sent to Shutter Island, a fictional spot off Boston Harbor that houses a prison for the criminally insane. He's there to search for the escaped patient Rachel Solando. As he begins to decipher the cryptic messages she left behind, a hurricane cuts off access to the mainland and riles up the inmates in the hospital. Sounds like something that could be a little boring in the hands of a lesser director but with Marty directing, this could be a top-rate thriller. The Lehane novel was originally optioned in 2003 and Wolfgang Petersen was at one point attached to direct. The current script was written by Laeta Kalogridis (ALEXANDER) but it's unclear if it will go through any rewrites. While Leo and Marty had a number of projects they were looking at (including THE WOLF OF WALL STREET), SHUTTER is expected to rocket to the top of the list and filming is expected to begin in March. DiCaprio recently wrapped filming on REVOLUTIONARY ROAD with Kate Winslet and is currently filming BODY OF LIES with Russell Crowe.

Extra Tidbit: Other movies based on Lehane's novels include GONE BABY GONE and MYSTIC RIVER.

Oh no...

Scorcaprio together AGAIN?

And doing another pre-'00's-set movie?

And raping the Boston accent once again (even though I liked THE DEPARTED)?

Color me worried.

The fact that the writer of ALEXANDER is on this, I don't know if this will work, even if Scorsese is directing. But I could be surprised. We'll see.

I love Marty and Leo, but this book is not up his alley, I loved this book and it is about so much more than the mystery (akin to how Mystic River is labelled mystery fiction but a compelling human drama) not to mention his last attempt to display Boston failed miserably (not the movie itself, but it's depiction of Boston.)

Very Cool

This is great news. The plot actually sounds pretty cool to me, especially if Scorsese goes about it CAPE FEAR style. Of course, knowing Scorsese is a director whose style is constantly changing (for the better), we may see a whole new type of film from him.

Sounds kind of cheesy, like a typical Dimension fare, something probably from Renny Harlan; B-level stuff . But Scorsese certainly has proved that he can direct a well written thriller. Hopefully, they get the writer of THE DEPARTED, he captured the Boston demeanor perfectly. Go Sawx
