"Let...the show...begin!" First trailer for Keanu Reeves' directorial debut Man of Tai Chi

Apr. 22, 2013by: Jesse Giroux

Man of Tai Chi

I think there's a lot of people interested in seeing how Keanu Reeves handles directing duties for his first film behind the camera, MAN OF TAI CHI, but I have to warn you that this first trailer from Bleeding Cool is pretty underwhelming. I've read some comments that the preview is cut similar to Hong Kong films from the 1980s and the trailer is definitely aimed towards the Chinese market. However, the trailer is just...boring.

Reeves has said before that he wants to take filming martial arts to the next level with his Bot and Dolly camera rig but there isn't much from the trailer that looks impressive. It is a short preview though and maybe they are holding back from showing us more but right now it looks fairly generic.

About a martial artist in Beijing who gets sucked into an underground fighting tournament, MAN OF TAI CHI also stars Simon Yam and Iko Uwais, and currently does not have a release date.

Extra Tidbit: After the trailer I'm not sure about Keanu Reeves as the villain. His delivery is...just...so...wooden.

I pretty certain he outsourced the directing to China and neglected to rebrand it. Regardless, I can't wait for the show to begin

B&D rig wasn't used for shooting the film in the end

Read this on Collider, from an interview with Reeves:

It was tough. It was just too big and too much. We had to ship it to China. All sorts of practical consideration ran into the vision and the dream, he said. It certainly influenced the way that we went forward in terms of shooting some of the fight scenes in terms of the organicness and movement of how we shot some of the fight scenes. I just couldnt go on top. [laughs] I couldnt do an overhead shot with no cut into a close

I'ts a shame, but I'm still looking forward to this. What can I say, I'm a sucker for martial arts films with underground fighting tournaments.

Any film rests with its villain

so having Little Wooden Boy as the baddie is an automatic negative. That said, I'm interested in seeing how good this is. I heard Keanu actually produced a fairly decent documentary on the difference between digital and film stock for movies a while back.

The trailer did make me chuckle a bit, especially with Keanu trying to bad guy it up. Seems like he will be hamming it up. But the martial arts seem very solid and it's cool to see Karen Mok in this. She was awesome in So Close. I just wish we could have seen more from his use of Bot and Dolly. I am very curious to know what it looks like in the actual film.

Keanu's acting aside, the cast is solid and the martial arts real. I'm still pumped.

It's only one short trailer. I'll withhold judgement until I see something more from the film.

Those fighting scenes are too fast to look at. Hopefully the actual fight scenes would be a lot of Long Shot technique and let audiences absorb those fights.

It doesn't look that bad, right?

Faith in Keanu Reeves, destroyed.

Not too sure about the "fight to the death for entertainment" premise. I think if Keanu wasn't attached as director, I wouldn't really be keen on this at all. And Keanu, you're playing a villain in an over-the-top kung fu flick. Don't be afraid to ham it up a little!

Somehow I was expecting more than your B-grade tournament flick. The action had better deliver...

Looks awesome.

Can't wait to see what the B&D rig produces in full.

Extra Tidbit:

You know who Keanu Reeves is right? He's got one character he "plays:" Keanu Reeves. Movie looks so-so, if martial arts flicks are your thing.

Well I was hoping Keanu Reeves playing a villain would be at least slightly different than normal Keanu...but no, it's not.

If you're a fan of The Raid, you're shit outta luck. They filmed for a PG-13.

I love me some martial arts flicks... but this doesn't look like anything special so far. I'll still probably watch it when it hits video.
