Liam Neeson nets a $20 million payday for his particular set of skills in Taken 3

06.24.2013

Looks like Liam Neeson is doing some taking of his own for the next sequel in the TAKEN franchise as he's about to net $20 million to reprise his role as Bryan Mills, the CIA agent with a particular set of skills in TAKEN 3. The first film grossed $226  million worldwide (from a $25 million budget), while the sequel took in $376 million worldwide (from a $45 million budget), putting the stamp of approval on another venture into the kidnapping thriller business. Screenwriters Robert Mark Kamen and Luc Besson have already begun development on the script for TAKEN 3, but no director is attached as of yet.

Olivier Megaton, who helmed the sequel, is a likely candidate, but nothing is set in stone. I'm sure there will be a collective of eye-rolls and sigh's that this is moving forward, but you can't argue with those box office receipts. That's winning across the board. I enjoyed the first one very much, especially the director's cut, but still haven't seen the sequel, so I can't say whether it was a worthy follow up or not (although many relayed that it was not up to par). I dig Neeson and think this sudden launch into action star territory late in his career is pretty sweet. I think it's cool he's got his own franchise, even if I wish it was DARKMAN instead.

TAKEN 3 will likely get rolling within the year for release in 2014. More as this develops.

it would be better if

they do away with the mother/ daughter getting taken story, and go back to the roots of the first one, but this time have him running security for some one like the the guy he was protecting in the second one at the beggining. then there wouldnt be some stupid daughter running around not knowing what to do.

Sweet! Taken was an absolute amazing movie and I thought Taken 2 was one of the best sequels to an action movie I have ever seen. I heard a lot of complaints about the movie, but when I saw it I was floored on how great the sequel was.

And Liam Neeson kicks ass!

Taken was an adrenaline shot for action films, for me. But if they overplay the narrative, the franchise could do more bad than good. Need a fresh script, and Neeson deserves it.

Wouldn´t it be cool if HE was the one to be taken hostage actually? The whole movie will be then on how to set himself free.. maybe something in the lines of Black Hawk Down

I don't get the intense hate for the second one.

The first one is enjoyable, the second is more of the same. Perhaps the level of violence is cut down in the sense that there's no on-screen torture like the first movie, but other than that he's kicking, punching and shooting people square in the face for an hour and a half.

I don't see what more people were expecting.

I mean don't get me wrong it'd be lovely if it were a bit more original and I hope the third installment is, but the

I mean don't get me wrong it'd be lovely if it were a bit more original and I hope the third installment is, but the second the sequel was announced I was knew exactly what they were aiming for, and that's a pointless un-original and un-needed cash cow sequel that many strong 80's action movies got. And I'll be damned if I don't love me some Die Hard 2, Lethal Weapon 2, etc, etc.

I certainly didn't hate it. I personally thought it was good, just not as good as the first one. No complaints regarding Liam Neeson, he was awesome as always.

They need to somehow return to what made the first one so "real." You had all these elements of reality working together to make it feel like so much more than just Liam Neeson going around and whooping ass, which was basically what the sequel was. In the first you had the element of time, he was in a race against the clock, and much like the first Hostel you had this thought along the lines of, "Holy shit, this can really happen to these girls." You had all these elements of reality working together to make it feel like so much more than just Liam Neeson going around and whooping ass, which was basically what the sequel was. In the first you had the element of time, he was in a race against the clock, and much like the first Hostel you had this thought along the lines of, "Holy shit, this can really happen to these girls." And here you are in the movie a man so calculated, alway with a plan hung up by a pipe ready to be killed, you're gripping the edge of your seat and he has to rely on for the first time sheer dumb luck to keep moving forward.

However, the possibility for evoking that type of emotion and suspension again is going to be very difficult to replicate because who can he really get kidnapped this time? And if the story goes someone comes to him and contracts him to find his wife, kids, etc. It just won't work the same way because you don't have a connection to these people, you have a connection to the character of Bryan Mills, so you will not achieve the same amount of emotion from Liam Neeson/Bryan Mills as you would if the characters were his own kin that went missing.

Adding on, additionally they better not take the route of, "You've seen him kick ass through two movies, watch him fail." That will just sincerely piss off me and a lot of people.

"I'm sure there will be a collective of eye-rolls and sigh's that this is moving forward" - and then you follow that up with the box office receipts of the second movie????

Seriously, the first was an extremely pleasant surprise - you have absolutely no idea how good the movie is...but afterwards have a massive grin on your face...and have the urge to go out and kill bad guys (From Dusk Till Dawn had the same affect on me :o). The second movie was never going to live up to the high

Seriously, the first was an extremely pleasant surprise - you have absolutely no idea how good the movie is...but afterwards have a massive grin on your face...and have the urge to go out and kill bad guys (From Dusk Till Dawn had the same affect on me :o). The second movie was never going to live up to the high standards of the first one...partly because you knew what the formulae was...and having seen the trailer, knew it was being repeated, but it was still enjoyable watching Mills do his stuff again.

I'm happy a third is coming but as others have pointed out - hope there's a slight change - no family in trouble this time - just Mills on an assignment - f**k, he's in the security business - does no one he is actually paid to protect ever get taken???? Have one of his clients get taken...and then it becomes personal...oh f**k...that's Man on Fire...but what the f**k...that's another badass movie – nothing wrong with copying that idea.

I've liked Neeson ever since I saw him in Darkman but after Batman Begins, Taken, The Grey, Unkown...he's become a particular favourite of mine. Throwing himself in his work after his wife's death has certainly had at least one positive affect for him and us.

Taken 3: Worst Dad In The World.

Kidding aside, the second one sucked balls. First one was all kinds of awesome. I say ditch Maggie Grace and Jean Grey and get a wealthy family to enlist Neeson's "services" to locate their son / daughter who has been kidnapped. Then find some kind of personal connection between that son / daughter with Neeson. Then make Neeson go crazy and snap necks, break bones, and make people shit their pants over the phone. All I need is something other than Maggie Grace getting into trouble again, and

The first one is an instant modern classic. The second one features a fantastic scene where Maggie Grace's legs steal the show.
I respect Liam Neeson a lot. He's kind of an idol of mine; I like to call myself Neeson in certain circles because of him. Even if the Taken series is getting hammy, it's still extremely enjoyable.
Also, if Liam Neeson ever joins the Expendables, I fully expect him to whoop EVERYONE's ass.

First was great, but the second was just ok and could have been a lot better. They should ditch Megaton and get a better director. Joe Carnahan would be a great choice. The Grey was my favorite movie from last year, and it would be great for him to re-team with Neeson in the Taken series.

While Taken 2 was okay, it didn't make a case for its own existence and felt like a very unnecessary sequel. I love watching Neeson kick ass and take names as much as anyone else, but it seems the premise has already worn thin after only two films. They need to come up with something really exciting and fresh to keep anyone interested.

I'm all for Taken 3 if they get rid of Olivier Megadouche, and bring in someone with a better handle of action like Gareth Evans (The Raid: Redemption) . Also, it'd be a good idea to bring his former CIA teammates into the action.

First one was awesome. AWESOME I SAY.

Second one was all right. I'd be happier if they didn't get Olivier Megaton (who despite still having the coolest name is merely an average director). I'd also like to see more of Leland Orser's character Sam. For a main villain I'd like to see either Ray Winstone, Ray Stevenson or Ray Liotta. Or anyone else called Ray.

Somewhere right now Downey Jr. is laughing at this.

Not poking fun at Downey Jr. He deserves every bit of money he is getting. It's just that this doesn't even compare to what he is getting for Avengers 2 and 3.

Can't argue with those box office numbers

so it's not surprising that Taken 3's gotten the green light, even though #2 wasn't as good as #1. And yes, Neeson would make a great Expendable, even though he's not nearly as physical as Stallone or Statham. He's more a thinking man's action hero.
