Liam Neeson was offered and turned down the role of James Bond 20 years ago

03.11.2014by:

At the age of 61, Liam Neeson is kicking more ass than he ever has in his four decade career. The star of NON-STOP has become an action hero at an age when most actors are fading out of the genre and he doesn't seem to be showing any signs of slowing down. It may seem that he has a career that most would envy, but it was very close to having been even bigger.

Neeson was offered the role of James Bond back during the period after Timothy Dalton vacated the role. In an interview with Hull Daily Mail, Neeson explained how close he got to the iconic part and why he turned it down.

“I was heavily courted, let’s put it that way, and I’m sure some other actors were too,” says Neeson, as he chews thoughtfully on a toothpick and rests his long limbs on an armchair.

“It was about 18 or 19 years ago and my wife-to-be said, ‘If you play James Bond we’re not getting married!’ And I had to take that on board, because I did want to marry her,” he recalls, smiling.

His wife, Natasha Richardson, tragically died five years ago, but I can imagine why she didn't want him to take the part. Becoming James Bond is not just a role but an all-encompassing part that follows you for the rest of your career. Some actors like Roger Moore and Timothy Dalton never recovered from being stereotyped as the suave secret agent while others have thrived. It could also have had something to do with the women that would have been pursuing the man in the tuxedo that she may not have wanted to deal with.

At the very least, knowing that Liam Neeson was almost the famous secret agent puts into perspective why we keep thinking he would have been perfect for the role as we see him kicking ass and taking names in movies like TAKEN and NON-STOP. Now if only someone would dream up a similar character and grab Neeson before he hits 70.

He already has that action role: Bryan Mills

I've heard stories that TAKEN 3 is in the works, so I'd say that's his big action franchise right there.

It would be fun to see him take his "particular set of skills" onto THE EXPENDABLES. Hey, if they got Harrison Ford . . .

Seems to have worked out for both parties involved. Brosnan helped revitalize the series (until it took a wrong turn into surf mode), and Neeson built his career elsewhere but still gets to kick ass now.

On the side, Goldeneye remains one of my favorites. Can you imagine Neeson in that instead of Brosnan? I'd like to somehow see a re-edited trailer for that.

Agreed. I just find it interesting to think about that possibility, not that I'd rather it have been Neeson.

I actually cant. Brosnan and Goldeneye are basically my favorite Bond movie/actor combination.

He could have been a decent Bond, but he hasnt handled his career badly. I would much rather be remembered for a leading role like he had in Schindlers List than as another Bond in a long list of Bonds. There are some great James Bond actors previous. I personally think that Tim Dalton and Pierce Brosnan are both just fantastic, even now. But do they have A list careers that come even close to Neeson? No, they often either get typecast or turn an amazing role in a B movie. Do your thing

PS: This movie fan would love to see you take a break from the action flicks for a little while. Despite how epic The Grey is. Seriously, best Netflix movie right there.

"And I had to take that on board, because I did want to marry her" - Classic Liam Neeson. He would make a great Bond villain.

He would have made a decent Bond, but it's not like his career suffered from it. Like moderntimeskid said below, I would rather Neeson be remembered for films like Schindler's List, Rob Roy, Kinsey, Batman Begins, The Grey, etc. instead of something like Bond.

I remember reading an interview with Martin Campbell years ago, and he said that he originally wanted Liam Neeson as Bond in GoldenEye. He didn't why Neeson never got the role, now we know.

I'm just trying to picture him saying "Beg your pardon, forgot to knock" in such a polite way
