Lily of the Valley: This Week on Breaking Bad (Episode 9 / August 11, 2013)

Aug. 12, 2013by: J.A. Hamilton

NOTE: Join us every MONDAY as we review the latest episode...

EPISODE 9: Blood Money

THE HOOK:

The beginning of the end. Walt leaves his empire behind to live life, while Jesses alive, but dying on the inside. And then theres Hank, whose gunning for the King. One wrong move could mean life or death, and at this point, its still anyones game.

THE LOWDOWN:

(The following column contains MAJOR SPOILERS, so I don't recommend reading this if you haven't watched this episode). That sure felt like a long wait to see Walt and the crew again. A couple days ago while going to program the box to record this episode, I realized AMC was counting down with a marathon and, at that moment, Id tuned into the episode, Box Cutter, at the precise moment when Gus comes down into the lab and starts changing cloths. It was then I realized how much Im going to miss this show when its gone. To that end, the first of eight started out with a bang. The flash forward scene was reminiscent of the diner scene, and I immediately knew Walt was going for the ricin. To what end, who knows? Maybe its the key component Hank needs to nail him, but then again, by the looks of things, he couldnt be any more on the run so it almost feels like a moot point. Im sure theres more to it (there always is), and Im definitely curious.

Tonight was all about small and powerful scenes that give away only enough to wet our appetites. When we see Hank exit the can, he couldnt look more pissed. He doesnt handle it as nonchalantly as he should, but in his defence, it would be quite the kick to the nuts and hes probably feeling like a complete dumbass. But well come back to Hank. Jesses not doing so hot. That conscience of his is going to be either the death of him, Walt, or them both. Blood Money. Its one of the few lines Jesse mumbles with regards to the five million in cash Walt gave him. I get that his souls haunted, but damn Jesse, you cant afford to be this stupid. Giving that money to Saul for Mikes granddaughter is just dumb, and would paint a clear as day trail right back to him and Walt. My heart skipped a beat when he confronted Walt about Mike. Damn. The depth in his eyes when he looked at Walt blew me away. What a powerful scene, as was his scene with the bum near the end.

Skyler seems to be in good spirits with Walt out of the biz, but it was obvious that shes still adjusting to having him around the car wash. Lydia showing up was hilariousoh, and nice detective work there Skyler as to figuring out she was in a rental. Of course, we knew shed be back to gripe about Walt being out, but at the same time, her overzealousness hints at the idea that maybe shes forgotten who shes dealing with. No worries, Skyler put the kybosh on those shenanigans real quick. Lydiadid someone say loose end? Oh, and as useless as it was, I laughed at the whole STAR TREK scenario Badger and Skinny Pete were tossing around. That totally felt like the kind of shit dudes would talk about while baked out of their skulls.

BREAKING BAD SEASON 5's ninth episode doesnt let up for a second. I honestly thought thered be a much more drawn out confrontation between Hank and Waltobviously there will be, but I thought the initial I know, you know would come later. Nope. And it was beautiful. That moment when Walt exits the garage and stops to go back is perfect. You could almost feel the transformation from Walter White to Heisenberg as it happened, and the second you see Hank hit the button to close the garage you just know its on. Again, the pure intensity in Hanks eyes is mesmerizing. These actors are unbelievably invested in this story and these amazing characters. Even Walt, when he notices the books missing, and then bolts outside and looks for the tracker on his car, its all genius. Seeing his cancer come back is a game changer though, but I sincerely hope thats now how the great Heisenberg goes out. Im sure it wont bebut then again, with this show, you never know.

DRUG RELATED PROTIP:

Leaving autographed books from old drug bosses in your bathroom is never a good idea...no matter how oblivious you think your family is.

BEST LINE:

Walt and Hank have at it, and Hank says he doesnt know who hes talking to, to which Walt calmly responds, "If thats true, if you dont know who I am, then maybe your best course would be to tread lightly.

BITCH-O-METER:

Jesse barely says anythingbut Badger says bitch, which wasnt nearly as impressive as his STAR TREK story.

COOLEST SCENE:

I loved when Jesse shared his thoughts about Mike, but how can I not choose the ultimate showdown in Hanks garage as the coolest scene? That moment when Walt turned around gave me goose bumps, as did his final words to Hank. I cant wait to see where those two go from here.

FINAL VERDICT:

TELL US WHAT YOU THOUGHT OF THIS EPISODE BELOW!

Extra Tidbit: Jesses losing it, but I sure do wish my house was on his money paper route.

I know right, I almost shit my pants when Walt walked back in the garage and Hank closed the door.

Easily the best show to ever grace television, and I hate that it's on the way out. The only thing that can make that pain a little more tolerable is to see them go out in style, and if tonight's any indication, it looks like that won't be a problem.

The Flash

Agreed with most everything. Jessee's finest performance could be in this episode almost saying nothing. However I think coolest t scene goes to the flash forward. I've watched it twice now and could still feel my heart racing when we see "HEISENBERG" painted on the wall. And ending the scene on the lighter side, perfect. As for the ricin, I think it's clear now. Wherever he's going with the machine gun, he's not leaving. Walt's getting the ricin for himself.

After posting the column I was thinking about the ricin, and I one hundred percent agree with you, as much as I hate to say it, I think he's getting the ricin for himself as well. Of course, that looks a bit obvious right now, so maybe not.

Oh, snap!

This episode delivered. Big time! I just Jesse isn't in "bitch mode" for the duration of the series/his life. Maybe he doesn't care whether he lives or dies, but I do! Take the money and run, kid. Mike would have wanted it that way.

Awesome episode! This is really going to suck when the show is over. One thing I hope happens is Jesse snaps out of it. I really don't want to see him like this for the remaining episodes.

Kinda OT: Tonight, Mythbusters is doing a Breaking Bad special. Airs at 10pm Eastern Time

Fantastic episode.

Could be totally off here, but rather than his family leaving him (what I figured with the first future scene a year ago), I'm now getting the feeling that Hank screws up and accidentally gets them killed by not treading lightly. That sends Walt away, destroys Hank's life (Skylar's sis being his wife and all) and puts both guys in a downward spiral. Walt comes back for a final showdown where he can go out like a champ.

Love this show so much and I'll probably change my

Loved last night's episode

My only lingering thoughts are what happened to Walt for him to runaway (?) to New Hampshire only to return with a bunch of guns? Plus, his next-door neighbor looked absolutely terrified when she saw him. I have a feeling his family is either in witness protection or dead. I can't wait for the next 7 episodes!

Greatest Show Ever.

Finally. Couldn't be happier it's back. I'd absolutely give the best scene to Walt and Hanks showdown. Though I've been waiting since season 3 for the news the cancer was back. I felt the episode "Fly" was pretty much all about his cancer being back but they didn't touch on it again at all except for maybe 2 times throughout seasons 4 and the first half of 5 with Walt being very focused on a fly in the room. That's been bugging me so it's good to finally know instead of assume. As for the flash

If you've got an anti-aircraft gun you're intending to use, there is no point in grabbing something as subtle as ricin as well. Unless your intention is to not be taken alive. It's his cyanide capsule. But I'm just guessing. And where he is headed with both I haven't the foggiest. The only thing I do know for sure is that when it happens it's going to be amazing.

Fantastic

It goes without saying that this was bittersweet, because the show is finally here and we're very excited, but know also that it's done for good in seven weeks, but whatever.

This episode just reminds me why this is the best show on tv. From "Hello Carol" to "Tread Lightly" this had everything you could want. I loved that the confrontation happened now and not in episode 11, this makes these last episodes just that much intense to see what either man is going to do.

While I loved the garage scene and it was fantastic as Walt's final words rank right up there with his danger speech, the opener for me was fantastic. As soon as I realized in the first few seconds that was Walt's house I didn't know what to expect and I loved it. Also, like what orangejynx said the intrigue of seeing Heisenberg written on the wall was great, I can't wait to find as Carol's expression when she saw him was priceless and leads me to believe that Walt did something rather nasty. Like kill a DEA agent perhaps? IDK!

Also kudos to Skylar for telling that wimpy priss Lydia of. That was great!

I can't wait for the final seven as I know it only gets better from here.

Tread lightly

An amazing episode. I was so into it that I barely slept last night. Shitty on a work night. So good, from "Hello Carol" to the bitter end. Hank hitting the automatic garage door button has to be one of my favorite moments ever. Like, "holy shit- it's on." To me, Hank is the only one left who could possibly go toe-to-toe with Walt, and their inevitable showdown is going to be ugly. This show will not have a happy ending.

I think the ricin will be Walt's last stand. I think it'll be his get out of life card. I can't believe how super epic that episode was. Bring on 2.

Most shows usually drop the ball in the first episode or two of a major climax but the cast and crew absolutely nailed it for "Breaking Bad". 7 episodes to go.

Only 7 left...ugh!

Great confrontation, and the cat and mouse game starts now!!! Can't wait to see what these next 7 episodes bring to the table. And I'm calling it now, Jesse is gonna be the key to all of this. I'm not sure how exactly, but he's gonna find out what Walt did to Mike and maybe let his emotions get the best of him. Greatest show on TV now! So sad it won't be here much longer.

It doesn't seem like it, but there are so many ways this show can end...but I don't want it to. My only complaint, I don't to see Jesse go out like this, the guy's grown so much, it would be a shame to see him end on such a low note.

According to interviews before they wrote this season, Vince and the writing staff sat down with the cast and asked them what they thought would happen to each character or storyline. Vince then said he would make sure that none of what the cast hypothesized- would happen. Essentially keeping the audience from guessing obvious outcomes.

That's kind of been the case since he killed Gale. Most of the scenes with him are of him moping around, quiet, drowning out the noise...

I'm getting the feeling that either Jesse or Walt is going to end up committing suicide. Walt seems like he's on a path to not being taken prisoner and Jesse seems like he's letting his conscious eat him up. I am wondering if the tossing of the money is going to lead back to him. But what a great episode. The flash forwards was very intriguing and I love how they play that same part with the neighbor again later, but in a completely different light. And let's not forget that the flashforwards are happening a year or so later from when the season began. So, I don't think the cancer gets Walt. He not only has his hair during the flash forwards (and a beard as well), but it's past the six month mark. That final scene also gave me chills. When he tells Hank "that's not going to happen", that sent a chill down my spine.

On of the lovely things about Walt's descent is how he ruined Jesse when he was getting his life back on track. It was a great role reversal, with Walt becoming the bad influence and I don't expect Jesse to fully come back. At least outside of maybe the final episode that hints at him getting better. Everytime Jesse starts to move on, Walt pulls him back to his demons.

Jesse ending off somewhere teaching chemistry classes under a new name/life at a community college (as opposed to attending

I'm giving this a green and I haven't even seen this ep yet. I hate spoilers but I can't help but read what people say. I can download it on iTunes in Australia after midnight. So glad you all loved this ep. I'm climbing the drapes in the lounge room with anticipation. I fucking can't wait for that line. :-D

Right now it seems obvious that Jesse is going to crack and go to the DEA to confess everything, which would most likely mean that Walt retrieved the ricin so that he can kill Jesse before he snitches.

Since it's so obvious, I doubt it actually happens.

Does anyone know...

Why a lot of the episode looked like it was filmed on a hand held camera? The story was great but the production looked like a college film.
