Lindsay Lohan helps James Deen make movies in the trailer for The Canyons

07.10.2013

THE CANYONS has two good things going for it: Bret Easton Ellis and Paul Schrader. This is also the best trailer we've seen so far. But did the acting get any better? Does it need to be good? At first I thought it was an episode of THE HILLS until it got to the dirty, sexy stuff. I think that's kind of what Ellis intended when he wrote it though.

I don't know if the trailer will make it seem more intriguing to anyone else, but I think that the cut of the trailer definitely makes it more appealing. That's the angle though--it's supposed to be vapid. Here you'll see some crotch shots (pants on), boobies (bras on), and talk of "making movies". Let us know if you think it's worth a watch.

Synopsis: Christian is a young LA trust-fund dude who's financing a horror film simply to keep his dad off his back about doing something with his life. He has been dating Tara for about a year — she was an aspiring actress/model who settled down with him when the reality of the business became apparent to her. She's now just Christian's bored plaything. Christian's assistant Gina is casting the film with assistance from Tara. Gina is pushing Ryan, her boyfriend and struggling actor, for the lead. Unbeknownst to either Christian or Gina, Ryan and Tara were a couple three years ago. When Ryan came back into Tara's life during the auditions for the movie, they reignited their affair. But Christian, a dangerous control-freak, finds out about the affair and starts playing cruel mind games with both Tara and Ryan, which escalate into an act of bloody violence.

Looks like it should be on a double bill with Schrader's earlier 'Auto Focus', which is no bad thing.

I actually...like that trailer. I mean, I still know very little about the story, but I can get down with that lost souls in L.A. vibe. Definitely feels very much like the collaboration it is between Ellis and Schrader. I'd also throw in some Soderbergh vibes.

That is one canyon I would not want to go digging for gold in and I am not referring to the movie.

I really wish they hadn't released all those genre trailers now. This "Spring Breakers"-style trailer actually looks like something Paul Schrader would make...oh, hello there Gus Van Sant.

Wow this looks like an actual movie

Which is the best thing I could have possibly said about it, given it's reputation. This may put a wrench in my viewing party I was orchestrating.

The New York Times article about the making of this film

Is one of the most interesting pieces of journalism I have ever read. I think that would be one hell of a movie. It is basically about three damaged people (Lohan,Schrader, and Deen) trying to make something worthy to fill a hole within themselves. If you haven't read it, I suggest you google it.

The movie doesn't look that bad as early word suggested
