Lionsgate to help Kevin Smith distribute Red State

06.28.2011

It looks like Lionsgate will be teaming with Kevin Smith's SModcast Pictures to distribute RED STATE.

Smith purchased theatrical rights to the film at Sundance by paying himself $20 at the end of a fake auction for buyers. After fifteen single-show engagements, Smith has made about $1 million dollars just touring the film around the country.

Here are the details on the deal: Lionsgate obtains rights to distribute the title on all packaged media, video on demand, subscription video on demand, electronic sell-through and TV in the US, while SModcast retains theatrical rights.

The film is due to release through several mediums by September with the DVD release coming at year's end.

Glad us common folk will get to see it now. I'm still very interested in Smith's take on the horror genre.

Loved It

I saw an early screening of the film and it absolutely blew me away. I am pleased to learn how well it did during it's tour.

As for the bad word of mouth, I am guessing it's from a lot of people expecting a straight up horror film, when it's not. There are several horror elements prominently featured in the film, but it's also an action movie, a teenage sex comedy, and a commentary on extremism. It blends pretty damn well.

What a dickhead

I'm pretty much sick of this douche and his garbage. I've heard nothing but bad things about this with words like butchered and hacked together used to describe it. Smith thinks his shit don't stink and blames actors for his movies not being accepted, take your shots like a man and put some real effort into your next venture and don't try silly tactics to get the word out on your movies. Fanboys are turning on you faster than you can eat a box of doughnuts fatass.

It's just too bad the film is getting such poor word of mouth. Not to say it's being called terrible, but for the huge deal that this film has been made out to be, it just doesn't even seem like the fuss has been really worth it. Obviously, I'm not going to judge it without seeing it, and I will probably see it. But from what has been said about this film so far, it just doesn't seem like all the attention it's been getting is worth the quality of the film.

PT Barnum was right, there really IS a sucker born every minute. This time, it's Lionsgate.

I have seen this, at one of the early screenings, and it's damn amazing. One of the best of the year so far.

Sounds like a success. He made a low budget film with no studio interference, marketed it to its target audience keeping the marketing costs down, brought it with him on a tour he probably would have done anyway, and now found someone to help with the non-theatrical releases so that everyone can get a chance to see it. Good on you, man

I saw it at the stop in Washington D.C and can vouch that this was a fucking FANTASTIC movie, not only as a Kevin Smith movie but as an unsettling character study of these religious zealots that take these things to an extreme. It has that Kevin Smith dialog in the beginning (Setting up why the kids are put into the situation they are put in).. it has several K. Smith alum scattered throughout (Sadly no Bruce WIllis!!) and the ending, no spoiler.. fucking GENIUS!

Waahhhhh! Big movie studios are mean, I'm not working with them! Wahhhhhh! I'm gonna distribute it myself! Wahhhhh!

.....and then, he realized how the real world works.

Seriously, what a bitch.

You do realize he has all ready paid back the $4 million to investors and everything now is profit. So his idea to not spend any marketing money did work.

mother fucker please, did you even read the article. He did what he set out to do, he only needed help delivering the movie to other non-theatrical venues. Film fans bitch constantly about how movies would be better without studio interference. This guy tries to make that concept work and he is considered a baby and a bitch, even though he never actually cried about anything, especially compared to how many people bitch and complain about him. What Smith said was more along the lines of "They

But at the end of the day, he still had to partner with a major studio, the same kind that he demonized at his childish fucking auction.

And you've gotta be in some kind of denial if you say Smith hasn't bitched up a storm, blaming anyone and everyone for Cop-Out except himself. The fuck outta here...
