Listen to the full-length version of Sam Smith's Spectre theme song

09.25.2015

Spectre Sam Mendes Daniel Craig Christoph Waltz Dave Bautista Banner

Earlier this week, we got a tiny tease of Sam Smith's SPECTRE theme song "Writing's On The Wall," and now the full track has been released on Spotify. Smith tells NPR's Morning Edition that "I tried to put myself in the shoes of Bond," while co-writing the song with Jimmy Napes, and that "My music is a diary and it's a recap of my life, and I wanted to bring that kind of honesty. In the lyrics — 'How do I live, how do I breathe? / When you're not here I'm suffocating' — I wanted a touch of vulnerability from Bond, where you see into his heart a little bit."

So what's the verdict? Personally, I think it's just OK. Out of the theme songs for the Daniel Craig-led Bond films, I'd rank it third, above Alicia Keys and Jack White's "Another Way to Die" from QUANTUM OF SOLACE, but below Chris Cornell's CASINO ROYALE theme "You Know My Name" and Adele's "Skyfall." What are your thoughts on "Writing's On The Wall"? Do you think Sam Smith has a Best Original Song Oscar nomination in his future?

SPECTRE will be in theaters on November 6, 2015.

Getting a bit worried about this movie... it has a real by the numbers feel. This song is not helping.

I expect a powerful song like Adele's Skyfall but this is nowhere near it. Bond theme should be somewhere along the line of Tom Jones' Thunderball. If it's a slow song, something like Sheena Easton's For Your Eyes Only. Adele's Skyfall got it right. I was expecting Sam Smith's powerful vocal like what he did in his Stay With Me song. Too bad Writing on the Wall isn't the case.

Boring. Skyfall did a number of things right: Adele's voice had power, the song had energy, the instrumentals felt progressive, as if leading to something. This has none of that really. The wrong voice, wrong lyrics, wrong kind of feeling. It feels soft for a bond film. I enjoy what they've been doing for the past three films, but this pales in comparison. It's like following up Paul McCartney's Live and Let Die with Duran Duran's View to a Kill.

Hey was half way there. Its like hearing the first few bars of the James Bond theme but never getting to the crescendo of blaring trumpets at the end. It's all stroking with no release. A James Bond theme needs balls!

I think a Bond theme should be more muscular, if that's the right word. As it stands, this is a little insubstantial. I like the arrangement, wish there were a little more brass. The falsetto doesn't really work - I think there is an audience out there for Sam Smith's style, but I guess a Bond theme sung by a solo male artist should have a sufficiently different style from one sung by a solo female artist. I've been ruminating on it for a while. This is the one bit I really like - the mounting

I've been ruminating on it for a while. This is the one bit I really like - the mounting orchestration and the fatalism of the lines "if I risk it all/ could you break my fall". However, I think it should lead into a big belting chorus, instead of a thin, lilting falsetto. Apparently, the song has drawn lots of comparisons to Michael Jackson's Earth Song. I can kinda hear that.

Long time no see, Jedd. Yeah, I agree Bond's theme should be more muscular. Maybe a cross between Tom Jones' Thunderball and Sheena Easton's For Your Eyes Only or Carly Simon's The Spy Who Loved Me.

what was that.

That doesn't say James Bond to me at all. That sounded like it should be at the end of a romantic olde time movie. Like ......Elizabeth or something lame.

Bring back Chris Cornell.

Aw man

I want to like Sam Smith, I do, and I thought "oh cool, he's doing a Bond song, this will make me like him."

Nope.

The music without the signing is great and classic Bond, but no.
Give me Garbage, "The World is Not Enough".

Nope. Maybe it'll grow on me but after Adele, which was how a bond song should sound imho, though I'm not a fan of her, she was made for that.
My favorite of the DC Bond era is Chris Cornell.
But, this is just horrendous sounding...maybe it'll mash up well with the opening credits, but as of now...it need

I might be in the minority here...

But it makes me want EVEN MORE something different for the next Bond Song...
Actually I'd like some Symphonic Metal, like Within Temptation or, even better, Nightwish !
Two bands that can mix powerful rock/metal with amazing symphonic background...

Just a taste for those who don't know Nightwish's work

Is there a single track with just the awesome James Bond music and without the woman's high pitch voice? ;)

Starts off strong but I wasn't a fan of his high pitched singing. I agree with others that I was expecting the song to climax and sound exciting but it never happened. I guess the song will work for the film but still feel disappointed.

I'm Not Crazy About This

The opening is so strong with the instrumental establishing the Bond sound. I just wish they could have carried that throughout the song to allow them the ability to incorporate some its instrumental pieces in the film's score (More than just the intro sound). The great Bond songs allow for that, and the result is a constant reminder that this is a Bond film, and not Mission Impossible or Bourne.

The background instrumentals are beautiful but his overall singing and use of falsetto's are ridiculous. There's just no punch or power to his voice, he needed to command the song. We need Adele back stat!

Hopefully it's not a sign of things to come...

Reminds me of Quantum of Solace all over again with a talented individual, but a poorly written and executed song. Sam Smith, who is known for his melancholy lyrics, really dropped the ball with this song. It just doesn't sound like a James Bond song.

I heard about two minutes worth earlier, I thought it was standard and acceptable, if uninspired.

But then he started the screeching cat high pitched business and it really tanked for me.

It's ok, not the worst bond theme but by no means the best. Wish it built to a big end after a nice start but it went nowhere!

Totally agree with the ending! The end of a Bond song normally wants to build into a tense action sequence potentially. Maybe this tells us that the first scene is action, then song followed by a story building dialogue scene? No matter the reason, this thing should end strong after that beginning. I totally agree!

What a dud and unfortunately have to sit through this when the opening credits roll for Spectre .

Thanks for making listening to a song the most ridiculously complicated thing in the world. Can't listen inside of the actual article, and signing up for Spotify did nothing. Come on guys.

No thanks.

It's like he emulated a Bond song and then got rid of all the excitement and energy.

Uninspired wank

Awful, dull, boring...

I am disappointed. Especially after Adele's excellent Skyfall, which I still find myself humming and singing.
