Marvel's 10 Greatest Movie Characters

Let's be honest, by the end of Summer 2012 this list could be even more useless than normal. Renner's Hawkeye could end up stealing the show in THE AVENGERS, Garfield looks like he might nail SPIDER-MAN, and Ruffalo's HULK might out-CGI all prior versions. Until then let's just deal with the class we have now. In a universe filled with thousands of unique heroes and villains very few have actually made the leap from page to screen interesting enough for anybody to care about. Let's just get to it so I can stop downloading pictures of men in tights.

Honorable Mention #1: Chris Evans' HUMAN TORCH

I didn't include him on the list strictly because these films are horseshit. There's no denying the goosebumps I had though when I heard him yell "Flame on!". I've written less geeky sentences in my time.

Honorable Mention #2: Alan Cummings' NIGHTCRAWLER

Had such a small part in a film overflowing with super supers I couldn't justify including him with the big boys. But still, he probably has one of the best introduction scenes of anybody on this list. I wanted more.

10. Chris Hemsworth's THOR

I'm still not sure why I chose the Thor character over the Loki character but I guess, in the end, being a bad ass for half the movie trumped being a snivelling little bitch for half the movie. Make sense? Don't care.

9. Toby Maguire's SPIDER-MAN

Really took a dive because of that third film but Tobey had stretches of nicely channelling Peter Parker. I really hope the new Spidey film leaves his mask on for the entire movie. I always hated Raimi's agenda of making the character more human by exposing his face for the last third of these movies.

8. Thomas Jane's THE PUNISHER

Rarely does a superhero movie get better with age but the realism of this film seems to fit in more with the modern day super-film than it did back in the day. There's still a better version of this film waiting to be made and I truly believe Jane could still pull it off.

7. CGI Edward Norton's INCREDIBLE HULK

Not perfect but easily the best version we've ever had of this giant bitch. We'll see this Summer if Hulk has what it takes to be a real superhero but until then, that'll do, Ed, that'll do.

6. Alfred Molina's DOCTOR OCTOPUS

When one of the best villain concepts jumps to the big screen and loses absolutely none of it's imagination it's almost hard to comprehend it's perfection. When an entire generation of cynical fanboys are sitting silent, nodding, you know you've done something right

5. Chris Evans' CAPTAIN AMERICA

There's a good chance Cap will have an even more interesting arc in THE AVENGERS what with waking up from the world's longest nap and being asked to lead a group of super beings in a modern world he has no idea about. And his girlfriend is an old bag.

4. Wesley Snipes' BLADE

Love or hate these films it's hard to deny Snipes' passion for the character. I guess it's not hard when you get to play the coolest superhero in the universe. Nobody gets more ass in the comic kingdom than Blade. And he gets to eat some of them. Most of them.

3. Ian McKellen's & Michael Fassbender's MAGNETO

It's the comic book movie equivalent of Brando and De Niro's Don Corleone. McKellen's eerie confidence and evil demeanour is very much complimented by Fassbender's revenge thirst and wide-eyed vision of power.

2. Robert Downey Jr's IRON MAN

There's a little more human depth to Tony Stark than your regular superhero. Downey brings the depression, humor, brilliance, personal demons, and bad-assery and effortlessly stirs them up and delivers something heroic on every level.

1. Hugh Jackman's WOLVERINE

It seemed like an impossible task at the time but Jackman took, arguably, the comic's most popular character and made him even cooler. There were endless opportunities to screw this up and he literally nailed it.

Stewart played Xavier well but the character himself was pretty lame in all the films he's featured. I'm glad he's not on the list.

Very good list

I would only switch up some positions. For me the top 3 is Iron Man, Blade and Fassbender's Magneto. Probably in that order

We are in agreeance pretty much the whole way through...gotta agree with ilovemovies though...I would have added Patrick Stewart's Xavier. Thomas Jane is underrated!

It's a fine list...

It's a fine list, for the most part, but I disagree with the order. I also wouldn't put Thomas Jane in the top 10...truth be told I wouldn't put him in the top 20 (but this is my opinion and I respect that you have a different opinion than me). I think my list would look more like this (and I am just spitballing here so this order could change at a moments notice):
Honorable Mentions: Whiplash, he looked awesome and could have been so cool, I think Iron Man 2 lost some potential with this

7. Thor
6. Doc Oc
5. Professor X (both actors)

3. The Incredible Hulk
2. Wolverine (Hugh Jackman)
1. Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.)

Jim, you compare McKellan and Fassbender to Brando and deNiro. That comparison is brilliant.
I liked the entire list in fact. The Nightcrawler deserved his honorable mention. Both Cumming and Romijn gave a lot to their roles.

just to further clearify my position

I think that Stevenson was easily the best Punisher, but that did not make War Zone a good movie. It did make it watchable however, and if you can get past the horrible villains and cheap-o feel, it is a fun hard-R action flick. Jane's Punisher is neither fun nor clever. Travolta was awfully miscast, the subplots were unnecessary, so was the forced comedy and the action was really bad. But the movies biggest mistake was showing the death of Castle's family. cutting it to 15 minutes doesn't

1) Punisher (with Dolph)
2) War Zone
3) Punisher (with Jane) (neither is really all that good)
while the actors:
1) Stevenson
2) Jane
3) Lundgren (all were really good, though Dolph's was least similar to the source material, followed by Jane's)

I actually agree that Eric Bana's Hulk was better in every possible way. Not only was Bana a better Banner (and I usually love Norton) but the design looked better. I loved that the Hulk in that version kept changing size depending on how pissed he was. I also think the animation looked better in the way it interacted with the environment. The norton hulk was just a bad video game character

Good list

Happy to see Evans get some love for F4, i remember having to sit through that turd in the cinema and him being the only worthwhile thing in it. Agree with them all asides from Norton's CGI Hulk though, felt there was too big a disconnect between him and the monster, it felt like too different beings and robbed the finale of the emotional punch it needed.

I agree with Lastmass, awful

Worst list, I agree. Wolverine in comics is much cooler, even Aronofsky said the films didn't resemble the comic version of Logan, he was more the anti-hero than the lead hero, he was the grumpy, stocky, he was the counter-character to Cyclops' boy scout act, not the centerpiece eye candy Jackman portrays him as.

Actually, technically speaking, Lou Ferrigno played the Hulk here, and Ang Lee played the Hulk in the 2003 movie. Mark Ruffalo will be the first actor to play both Bruce Banner AND the Hulk.

couldn't agree more. Ray was a badass. Jane was good, I think he actually was better than Dolph, but he played in easily the worst movie of the bunch.
War Zone definitely needed a better portrayal of the bad guys. That was the thing that hurt the most, because it kind of messed up all the gore and Stevenson's work (and a decent storyline too)

I'm also a big fan of Daredevil and Elektra as characters. But I know the Daredevil movie reception was mixed so I'm not that surprised by it's omission. Still, Professor Xavior's omission is still extremely major!

Who wrote this list?

You put Jane's Punisher on this list and keep Nightcrawler off it. Then place that Punisher version as number 8 before Maguire's Spider-man. Have you lost you mind or seen the Punisher movies? Why not throw Daredevil on the list or even Man-thing he was in a movie once. I hate to be so fanboy but I'm left with only one thing left to say, "Worst. List. Ever."
