The Ten Spot: Best Heart Scenes (Video Edition)

With Valentine's Day fast approaching, I wanted to do something special. No, not for my wife, but for you guys and gals! I wanted to scour movie history to bring you the ten best scenes featuring a heart. Before you get too sentimental on me, check out the list and see if you agree. I think many of you will be quite surprised at the romantic in me. Feel free to add your favorites in the talkbacks below. Happy Valentine's Day!

#10 - Kill Bill Vol. 2

Ah, the Five Point Palm Exploding Heart Technique. What a way to end KILL BILL, not with a bang but with a whimper. Bill has been an enigmatic figure for three plus hours of carnage only to have his true love break his heart, literally. Sorry, David Carradine, but love is a fickle bitch.

#9 - Mary Shelley's Frankenstein

This scene definitely caught me off guard when I saw it. Just when everyone thinks things are settling down, here comes Bobby D as he snatches Helena Bonham Carter's beating heart from her body and shows it to Kenneth Branagh with a look of defiant f*ck you. Brilliant moment in an otherwise mediocre movie.

#8 - Suspiria

Dario Argento decided that the only way to truly show you the pain of getting stabbed in the chest would be from the perspective of being inside the body. Seeing our opening victim get stabbed right in the heart tells first time viewers of SUSPIRIA that this is not your typical horror movie.

#7 - The Last of the Mohicans

THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS scene where they cut a guy's heart out is probably the biggest downer on the list. While all of the other movies here feature the heart ripping moments for levity or the gore factor, the Native Americans here do it with purpose and skill. But, that is what we get for ripping them off and giving them nothing but alcoholism and casinos.

#6 - From Dusk Till Dawn

Fred Williamson is a badass and seeing him unintentionally rip out a vampire's heart is classic. The only thing better is when Tom Savini stabs it with a pencil. It does beg the question as to why the Tarantino/Rodriguez vampires have skin like rice paper, but I guess that is all part of suspension of disbelief. Kind of like how they want us to think that Juliette Lewis is hot.

#5 - The Terminator

I almost forgot about this scene! Remember back when the T-800 was a villain and would do vile shit like this? Ah, the good old days. Almost makes me wish TERMINATOR 5 would bake Arnold a bad guy again. Plus, nothing spells terror like a jacked naked dude with a bad haircut holding your left ventricle.

#4 - The Sword and the Sorceror

The mandatory obscure heart reference. It has been years since I have seen this movie but compiling this list makes me want to watch it again. Even today the make-up effects look pretty damn good. I am just worried that watching it today will make me regret not keeping the fond memories I have of this movie being awesome.

#3 - Monty Python's The Meaning of Life

Mr. Creosote thought it was only a wafer thin, but it was the straw that broke the camel's back. THE MEANING OF LIFE is my favorite Python movie and this scene takes me back to my childhood when my father showed me this movie. To this day we quote this final restaurant scene at family dinners to the chagrin of my mother. Bring me a bucket!

#2 - Dumb and Dumber

Remember when Jim Carrey was awesome? I think this was the last time. Well, almost the last time. If they ever get DUMB AND DUMBER TO off the ground, I hope they reference this dream sequence just so we can see Lloyd Christmas blowing up human heads while doing parkour. Am I right?

#1 - Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom

Om Nam Shiva! Om Nam Shiva! Om Nam Shiva! Om Nam Shiva! Om Nam Shiva! Om Nam Shiva! Om Nam Shiva! Om Nam Shiva! Om Nam Shiva! Om Nam Shiva! Om Nam Shiva! Om Nam Shiva! Om Nam Shiva! Om Nam Shiva! Yeah. What an opening way to showoff The Terminator's badass-ness.

Kali Ma!

I assume I'm not the only one that yelled "Kali Ma" while watching every heart snatching clip up until number one!

"Hearts on fire, strong desire..."

As a kid, this was the first Indiana Jones film my Dad showed my brother and I, before Raiders. Which was chronologically correct, but man did this scene scar me for a bit afterwards.

No surprise this is numero uno. I vote Honorable Mentions should also go out to PULP FICTION and FROM HELL.

Two movies, and two movies only....

...and two of my all time favorites too. True Romance and Natural Born Killers are the best romance stories to me, as well as two of the best movies ever made.
