Top 10 Most Overrated Movies of the 1980s

Every generation looks back on their childhood movies with reverence. The decade you identify with shaped you as a person and the movies are a sign of that. But, a lot of times we think back favorably about movies that really aren't as good as we remember. The 1980s are a big decade for a lot of fans of this website and I am here to tell you that a lot of the movies from that ten year span suck ass. The 80s were my decade as well, but I have no problem telling you that the ten films listed here are really overrated. If you disagree or have another movie we forgot to add, let us know in the talk backs below.

#10 - ST. ELMO'S FIRE

Joel Schumacher's coming of age dramedy is one of the defining films of the Brat Pack era. With a cast of iconic faces ranging from Judd Nelson to Rob Lowe, this film defined a generation. But, it really f*cking sucks. It is melodramatic, poorly acted, and suffers from feeling like an unfunny episode of Friends.

#9 - FOOTLOOSE

Kevin Bacon may be great but this movie is not. The plot about a town that bans dancing because the Reverend's son died in a car crash makes very little sense. As the teens just want to listen to music and boogie, the older people soo escalate into burning books. Yeah, this is a movie with a concept that is way too serious for the finished film. Plus, there is very little dancing in this movie despite that being the one saving grace of the whole thing.

#8 - ORDINARY PEOPLE

Robert Redford's directorial debut won a bunch of Oscars and was named one of the best films of 1980 but I struggle to see why. Sure, Mary Tyler Moore, Donald Sutherland, Timothy Hutton and Judd Hirsch are good actors, but they barely rise above the cliche and overly plodding story about a family coping with loss. Unlike some of the best dramas of the 1980s, ORDINARY PEOPLE feels like a made for TV movie with a better than average cast.

#7 - BATMAN

As much as I love Jack Nicholson's over the top performance and Michael Keaton's understated take on the Caped Crusader, the rest of Tim Burton's movie doesn't hold up well. Where Richard Donner's SUPERMAN feels like it transcends time, BATMAN looks incredibly dated. Christopher Nolan and Zack Snyder have managed to create Batman movies that will look good for decades, but the 1989 version just doesn't hold up and neither do the sequels.

#6 - GREMLINS

I loved GREMLINS as a kid but that is a memory I should have kept intact and not revisted again. With all the talk of people against a remake of Joe Dante's film, I wonder how many have gone back and watched the original. Because it just doesn't hold up. The plot is nearly incomprehensible and the special effects are atrocious. Even the uneven sequel makes a bit more sense that the first but that is not nearly good enough. Just remake this already.

#5 - FLETCH

Chevy Chase made a lot of good movies in the 1980s, but one of his most iconic roles is one of the worst films. FLETCH is a collection of memorable scenes, but like a trailer that shows too much of a movie, we all know the funny parts of Michael Ritchie's film. The rest of the movie is mediocre at best and not worth the time to sit down and watch. Stick to YouTube highlights of the movie's funniest parts.

#4 - TOP GUN

I won't go into too much detail here (you can read my UnPopular Opinion on the film for that), but TOP GUN is the worst kind of overrated movie. For a story about fighter pilots pushing it to the limit, the stakes never feel tangible in this movie. Tom Cruise may be a badass but Maverick barely does anything interesting until the final twenty minutes of the film. The rest is just shirtless volleyball and dick measuring contests.

#3 - DIRTY DANCING

What the f*ck is the deal with this movie? I do not understand the obsession people have over this movie. Yeah, nobody puts Baby in the corner, we get it. What else is so good? Is it because Patrick Swayze was sexy? Is that it? Because I don't really see anything else worth the fuss in this flick. Sure, maybe the dancing is fun but the plot is so insanely idiotic that it makes me shake my head that anyone would qualify this as a good movie.

#2 - TRON

As much as I love TRON from a style standpoint and an overall concept, the 1982 movie is actually pretty boring. There is a lot of standing around and talking with the action relegated to segments of the overall film. While TRON LEGACY has some detractors, the flow and pacing of that film works a lot better than the original. Hell, even Jeff Bridges is way better in the sequel.

#1 - CADDYSHACK

This movie sucks. Really. As much as I respect it's place in the annals of quote history, CADDYSHACK is not a very good film. It has aged poorly and feels cobbled together from multiple scripts that were overridden by the brilliant improv performers in the cast. In between the memorable lines from Rodney Dangerfield, Chevy Chase, and Bill Murray, there is a whole lot of nonsense. Harold Ramis built himself one heck of a career after this movie but the growing pains as a filmmaker are very apparent.

I go away this weekend and come back to an article like this. Wow, what a terrible jab at still worthy movies that not only have held up well, but redefined a generation and still have people talking about why they're so good. I would expect a list like this on reddit or something, but not on here.

I was going to write that Batman still holds up well (Burton's visual style and Elfman's music is something that even the better written Nolan-movies can't live up to), but now I'm here to defend Alex Maidy. I agree with much of this article, especially regarding Dirty Dancing, Top Gun, and Batman (though I think the praise for Snyder's version is... premature, at best). But Tron? Gremlins? You, sir, are a blaggerd!

Garbage article! I rather watch these movies then 99% of the trash Hollywood spews out nowadays. More effort, creativity, and quality were put into film back in 80s. Who wrote this horrible article??

What?

Horrible list. Not every movie on this list is a favorite of mine, but I wouldn't say any of them are terrible. I would've been far less surprised if this was someone's best of the 80's list.

Saunderizer, I don't know about you, but I've been a visitor of this website since 1999. And one of its best attributes is the editors' personal opinions. They may not be objective (but no critic is), and from time to time, I disagree with them, but their opinion, their personal writing style make this a good website. If i'm interested in statics, I just go to IMDb.

How much are they paying you to spy on your own kind???

It's obvious you have no taste in movies and a shame Joblo employs you as a writer when you write garbage articles like this.

With articles like this, unfortunately, and maybe unintentionally, you are bringing a hateful vibe to the srikeback section, which is starting to remind me of the other site.
Please guys, if you are going to post controversial content, just do it carefully.
I'm not attacking Alex here, because everyone is entitled to his/her opinion and Alex is not offending anyone here. He is not saying that if you like this movies you are a whinny little b**ch (like some other posts by another writer have done).
I respect that people can have different opinions. Heck, even my wife has some really mind boggling love for some movies that I hate, and hate for some movies that I love. But she has reasons behind it and we can establish a conversation around it.
I think there was a missed opportunity here. It was a great way to start a conversation about movies that hold up, but since the content and criticism in this article is a bit shallow, with not many good arguments, then it has turned into what it looks like click bait and a hate corner, where some strikebackers think they are entitled to bully Alex.

Please guys, hope you understand this is all coming with love. Hope you can take the criticism, and please keep up the good work. Remember, this is just 1 of what, 50 good articles you have posted so far this week? Your good/bad article ratio is still amazing and I don't want it to change.

Big hug from Brisbane, Australia to all the team.

About Batman

You know, I see this phrase tossed around a lot "It looks dated" but still not sure what people mean, and why that makes a movie bad? Do Star Wars, Goldfinger, Close Enocunters, Ghostbusters, Wrath of Khan also look dated? Probably, but I either don't notice or don't care because of how great those films are in all aspects that are important to me (story, acting, emotion, etc).

How is Burton's Batman dated and Donner's Superman not? The effects? The cheesiness? Both movies are dated in that regard, and Burton's Batman has better effects and less cheese than Donner's Superman.
I still hear people talk about Burton's Batman. It has style. Nolan's movies are just there. While they tell a good story, I'm not sure Batman needs to be placed in a realistic setting. I'm glad we're seeing more flair with Batfleck.

Burton's Batman has less cheese than Donner's Superman?

Okay probably, I'll give you that one. Although both films smother it on pretty thick.

But better special effects?

Heck no. Not even close. The flying sequences of Reeves as Superman still hold up surprisingly well and the various rescue scenes and especially the earthquake during the film's climax are still really impressive. The special effects in Batman haven't aged particularly poorly either (although I'd say the costume

"it really f*cking sucks"...
"The rest of the movie is mediocre at best"...
"the 1982 movie is actually pretty boring"...

...and so on... THOSE ARE PERSONAL OPINIONS. And while everyone is entitled to one, it's not an official list or a list put together by several reviewers after lots of discussion and/or facts checking.

Also, the time context here is not present. People were far less cynical back then in the 80s, and used to get delighted with way simpler forms of

Take the BACK TO THE FUTURE movies for example, if Hollywood tries to make movies like those nowadays, much likely they will be focusing: a- listing A-stars, b- pseudo-science explanation, c- 3D/Imax/CGI/whatever makes it look "slick", d- any gimmick to be used,

but the "fun factor" will be left out of the equation or relegated to a mere consequence...

Everyone of the movies listed here made people have fun at the theater. They weren't Citizen Kane or Gone with the Wind, and guess what... THEY WERE NOT SUPPOSED TO. So kick back, and enjoy a little nostalgia just for the sake of it.

Fletch, Gremlins, and Caddyshack do not belong on this list. All three are the kinds of movies we've all probably seen multiple times and shared with friends who haven't seen them multiple times. Batman still holds up today being awesome... Im offended by its inclusuon here

Nothing about the original Batman is over-rated. Its not intended to be as serious as the Nolan trilogy and it's amazing fun. There are so many incredible quotes from that film. I will no longer take seriously any critical remarks from this author, Alex Maidy. He is lucky I hate this enough to reward him with a comment.

Most of these are cherished today because of the absurdity they present. I didn't see Top Gun until I was an adult and I just love it for all the unintended reasons. Footloose is the same. I love the soundtrack but scenes like the solo dance in the warehouse are just hilarious instead of emotional like they were intended. Gremlins I agree is overrated but I must disagree with Caddyshack. How about an underrated list?

While I can take a joke as well as anyone, and do appreciate the humor in some of the more heated reactions you provoked, these type of gags should probably be saved for April 1st.

Batman 89' is nearly 30 years old and aside from The Dark Knight, I have no reason to think Batman Begins nor TDKR will last the test of time within 20 years. The Gremlins complaint, watch Gremlins 2. The SPECIFICALLY make fun of Gremlins. They are FULLY aware how stupid the premise is but that doesn't change how much fun both those movies are.

Top Gun, Caddyshack, and Batman are all overrated? GTFO with that nonsense.

What the hell?

This is a pretty awful list. The opinions are short and poorly defended. I don't mind having opposing opinions, but this sounds like a rant without substance.

I mean...Batman? Seriously?

Batman isn't outdated, its timeless. Rewatched Batman and Batman Returns recently and had a bigger appreciation for them. This list is crazy.

The Tim Burton Batman films look timeless compared to the Nolan films. Their gothic, comic style can stand the test of time.

Having just seen Top Gun, yes it's a dated and awful awful awful movie. Hilariously homo erotic.
But the rest on the list, especially CaddyShack, are way off.

This List is Overrated

You had me until Batman, at that point I figured out what this list really was...click bait from someone who had no idea what they're talking about. Again, there's some of these listed on here that I don't like either, but it doesn't help your case when on 80% of the entries all you say is, "it sucks". That's how my 12 year old sister would review/express her feelings toward things without giving some sort of tangible reason as to why. No need to click on another article/review from this

Worst. Article. Ever.

I mean there is some opinionated crap on this site sometimes and like assholes everyone has one, but not everyone is one. Except the person who wrote this trash. You couldn't be more wrong. Almost every one is a certified classic and a great movie. You should stick to your day job of mopping up floors at the sperm bank.

Ouch

So you went through a list of the most popular movies of the eighties and decided to defecate all over some sacred cows. Congratulations, you've stirred everyone up.
You are entitled to your opinion, but your glib mini-paragraphs do you no favors, just making you sound like a crank or the worst click-bait-b.s. webiste. Why not save these for Unpopular Opinion columns where you can break them down and make valid arguments? I typically enjoy those articles, whether I agree or not.
Yes, a couple

Yes, a couple of these movies ARE bad movies and, yes, sentiment does cloud judgement. But stating that Caddyshack "sucks" in your first sentence isn't going to make you any friends. Yes, it does feel a little disjointed as the result of all the great improv overpowering the movie about teenage caddies they intended to make, and if you wrote about it intelligently, a lot of fans would even agree with you.
I realize that coming up with Top Ten lists every week can be a bitch, but this post is just lazy.

I wasn't going to go full redbar on this, because you cited a couple of decent examples. But fuck it. I didn't grow up with Gremlins, but when I did get around to seeing it, I understood what the fuss was about instantly. For Phoebe Cates' anti-Christmas monologue alone it's a classic.

You may be right that the best way to see Fletch is with YouTube highlights, but that doesn't change the fact that those highlights are pretty darn funny.

And Caddyshack... is the Apocalypse Now of '80s

And Caddyshack... is the Apocalypse Now of '80s comedies. There, I said it. Virtually no script, a complete mess, but somehow it works. And you failed to mention the great work by Ted Post, who manages to be one of the most sympathetic antagonists in any '80s comedy.

I didn't know who Ted Post was so I had to look him up. Which movie was he in? IMDB doesn't list him as an actor on any of the ten movies on this list. I'm interested now since you gave him (or his performance) such a high praise.

so umm joblo.com is...

in the "Troll Article" business now, apparently. There isn't a rating bad enough to associate with this article. These movies are gems. The end. I know, I know..."it's your opinion." In this case, your opinion is flat out wrong, except for "Ordinary People". That I get, but the others, I just feel like you chose from a list of 80's movies. For shame, I say.

what a dumb list, how old are you man? you just make a list of beloved films of the 80s and say "this is bad... this is bad... bla bla bla". Really, it's just put dirt and make a facebook post (because this looks like it, not a good article in a good and serious web page of info as Joblo.com is) and throw hate on them... shame.

Caddyshack overrated. Right there you reveal that elitist view of yours. Highly quotable with one of the best ensemble casts of its time. FFS, it makes golf entertaining! Out of Africa, now that's a fucking overrated movie! Once more, how dare you sir!

The movies I chose for this list may hold sentimental value for viewers, but that doesn't make them good movies. In fact, most of the films on this list were critically panned when they were released.

So if a movie doesnt hold up the test of time thats mean is not a good movie? what happen when the movie is panned first and then became a classic?

I completely disagree with every criticism on this list. Running out of unpopular opinion ideas? Next thing we will get a overrated movies of the 90s with American Beauty and Silence of the Lambs list (oh Lecter was in the movie for like 18 minutes and they gave him an Oscar, what a stupid decision!).
