Top 10 Movie Trailers of 2012

Movie Trailers: Teasers, Theatrical, TV Spots, International, Domestic, Featurettes - they are a preview of what's coming next to our local movie screens. We look at them with anticipation, joy, and horror as we play them over and over scrutinizing each frame and proclaiming our love or hate for what it represents. Everyone has an opinion on what makes a good movie trailer and I'm sure my list may not match up to anyone else's; that's fine. At the end of the day we're all just fans of this great invention: the cinema.

#10 (TIE): Pacific Rim

Director Guillermo del Toro is back and this time he's bringing giant monsters and robots with him!

#10 (TIE): Oblivion

One of the few remaining drone repairmen assigned to Earth, its surface devastated after decades of war with the alien Scavs, discovers a crashed spacecraft with contents that bring into question everything he believed about the war, and may even put the fate of mankind in his hands. Tom Cruise's hands, dude's pretty capable.

#9: Man of Steel

An alien infant is raised on Earth, and grows up with superhuman abilities. He sets out to use these abilities to guard his adopted world. Finally a trailer that gives me hope the movie won't suck.

#8: Star Trek Into Darkness

After the crew of the Enterprise find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. Picks up right after the last movie seamlessly!

#7: Les Miserables

In 19th-century France, Jean Valjean, who for decades has been hunted by the ruthless policeman Javert after he breaks parole, agrees to care for factory worker Fantine's daughter, Cosette. The fateful decision changes their lives forever. Authentic and powerful vision of the story.

#6: Skyfall

Bond's loyalty to M is tested as her past comes back to haunt her, bringing MI6 under attack. The best Bond movie yet!

#5: Prometheus

A team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race. Quite possibly better than the film itself.

#4: The Avengers

Nick Fury of S.H.I.E.L.D. brings together a team of super humans to form The Avengers to help save the Earth from Loki and his army. Hulk Smash!

#3: The Great Gatsby

Nick Carraway, a Midwesterner now living on Long Island, finds himself fascinated by the mysterious past and lavish lifestyle of his neighbor, Jay Gatsby. He is drawn into Gatsby's circle, becoming a witness to obsession and tragedy. Lush, sexy and on the money.

#2: The Dark Knight Rises

Eight years on, a new terrorist leader, Bane, overwhelms Gotham's finest, and the Dark Knight resurfaces to protect a city that has branded him an enemy.

#1: Iron Man 3

Tony Stark uses his ingenuity to fight those who destroyed his private world and soon goes up against his most powerful enemy yet: the Mandarin.

Meh...

In my opinion Pacific Rim should be at #1. I loved a lot of the trailers on this list, but Pacific Rims trailer got me more excited to see a movie than any of them. Avengers would be a very close #2. I've watched the Pacific Rim trailer more times than any trailer in awhile. I even had my instructor play it on the overhead projector in class. This is why I'm not a big fan of lists like this though, it's all opinon based and everybody's opinion is different.

Weak List

Entirely ignores the many great trailers for dramas and Indies from this past year. Also, teasers and trailers should really be on separate lists as their functions and editorial approach are much different.

The list seemed fine to me i may of changed a few around or added some personally. my only gripe is, isnt there usually a bit of talk about why the trailer was good and why it made the list instead of a quick synopsis blurb? seems a bit rushed thats all

switch...

Switch the position of the avengers and dark knight rises trailers, cuz "I" believe the avengers trailer was way better than dark knight, but I keep forget there are a endless number batman dick riders in the world, regardless of how crappy the ending of TDKR was. There are afew other movie trailers that should be on here as well......

Killing Them Softly had a fantastic trailer! Got me so pumped up every time Johnny Cash's, "The Man Comes Around", started playing.

I don't necessarily disagree with everything on here. But you pick Star Trek and Oblivion and ignore Argo and Django Unchained. Argo in particular had an AWESOME trailer. Eh, to each their own.

Holy Motors was another one I really liked.

Agreed. This is a crappy list that caters to blockbusters, many of which had uninspired trailers. Argo is easily a top 5 trailer on year.

As my favorite book of all time I was so excited for this film. The perfect Daisy, Tom, and Gatsby (We shall see about Tobey). This trailer was everything I hoped for in a Baz movie, as well as, a Gatsby film.

The last time I was this pumped up for a summer movie while watching a trailer was the Dark Knight. Prometheus had me going, too bad it was not as great as expected.

Great trailer that makes me wonder what is higher on the list. Before this I was not sure if Man of Steel would deliver. Lets face it Superman Returns sucked (I attempted to revisit it and besides Spacey still sucked) and Sucker Punch was just softcore porn in an action film (which I am not complaining about) however it made no sense. This trailer shut me up.

Oblivion

i think Oblivion will be next summer's "Prometheus". Everyone said the trailer was awesome and it would be one of the best movies of the year, while i only thought it looked ok and wasnt expecting much. People were expecting a ten and got an 8 and were very disappointed. I was expecting a 6 and got an 8 was thought the movie was enjoyable. I have very low expectations for Oblivion and dont see why people are so excited about it. But it could be good.

Cloud Atlas would be in my top 5.

Also, maybe it's just me, but you trailers linked aren't the ones I'd imagine being placed. When I think of TDKR trailer, I don't think of that messy one.

Loved the use of the wailing sound effects from the Alien trailer, that really got the blood pumping.

Wrong trailer.

Is there a reason the "On My Own" trailer was selected? Sorry, but the teaser with Hathaway's "I Dreamed A Dream" is infinitely superior.

I thought the Django Unchained trailer was amazing! Would be in my top 5.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey would probably be my number 1. Anticipation levels went WAY up when I watched it!
