Live-action Secret of NIMH film finds its director

02.01.2017

So there's going to be a live-action SECRET OF NIMH film, now titled RATS OF NIMH for some reason. Now, I don't have a problem with live-action remakes of animated films in theory, and have even enjoyed a few of them. So I'm not writhing with anger that they dare touch an animated classic (because, you know, it will still exist afterward). Hell, does anyone even remember that CHARLOTTE'S WEB had a big-budget live-action version? No? Okay then.

Anyway, RATS OF NIMH has just gotten a hold of its new director, and it's...drum-roll please...James Madigan.

Who? Well, apparently Madigan is a VFX supervisor who has directed some second-unit stuff, most recently on the upcoming Jason Statham giant shark movie MEG. As for VFX, he has worked on IRON MAN 2 and even won some Emmys for his work on HBO's ROME.

On the one hand, it's good to get someone working on an effects-laden film to have a background in visual effects. On the other hand, you also need someone to know how to deal with acting, pacing, storytelling, etc., and just because you know the technical aspects, doesn't mean you know the other aspects. I have hope though. SECRETS OF NIMH is a favorite of mine, but I have to admit a live-action version intrigues me.

But what about you guys? Any fans of Don Bluth's SECRETS OF NIMH animated film? And if so, what do you think about a live-action version? Sound off below!

Extra Tidbit: There is a direct-to-video SECRETS OF NIMH sequel that sucks. Because of course there is.

Pete's Dragon and The Jungle Book were great. The tech is able, I reckon this could work if the story was adapted right.

I'm not really a fan of the idea of remakes in general, and just because it's changing from animation to live action doesn't change that. Part of what makes those films special is the animation. I just hope this trend doesn't continue. I can't say I look forward to a time when Pixar films like Toy Story or Up or Dreamworks films like Shrek or How to Train Your Dragon are being turned into live action films.

This really seems like a weird project to do live action because the main characters are all animals.
On the other hand is it wrong for me to think a live action Iron Giant might work?

The Secret Of Nihm is like The Iron Giant: a (mostly) unknown masterpiece !
This could turn good or SO bad (I fear for the later), but all things considered I don't think that's a good idea...
But then again I didn't thought the new live version of Jungle Book would be any good. How was I wrong... So who am I to tell !

Plus . . .

The live-action "Charlotte's Web" was well-received, and grossed $144 million.

Do your research, Damion.

The animated film was based on the book "Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH".
